Hi, I will be in Washington D.C. for about 6 weeks starting this Saturday (the 13th I think) for an NIH internship/volunteer work. Wondering if anyone has done NIH before and what it's like, also if anyone is near there we could meet up or something
Btw, I'll have a HP Mini-note laptop, you guys think it's good enough to play Starcraft? I'll try installing it tomorrow, but I read the reviews and heard that it's processor isn't great and the computer gets really hot... I've seen people playing SC on the Asus though iirc.
Thanks

HP-Mini? It'll probably play sc. That's a pretty small keyboard though...
There's a few of us in the DC area, was talk of a group get together sometime later this month somewhere in like Alexandria area at some pc cafe but the guy who was coordinating it all kinda disappeared or something...

If you like seafood go up to Baltimore and get some crabs! Super delicious and tons of fun to eat. The Baltimore Aquarium is also flat-out amazing. I'm afraid I've never done touristy shit in DC or I'd be more helpful.

My class just went to DC 2 weeks ago for our senior class trip (Second time I've been there). It's a pretty fun town, I think you'll enjoy it.
|
Have a good time in Washington! Just wondering, are you going to make more FPVods? I enjoy them.
|
Thanks for the tips everyone Hopefully a LAN can be organized when I'm over there, that'd be awesome! I was just checking some threads about washington lan plans but doesn't seem like any of them came through, but it'd be sweet if one did
@Nosmo, I actually haven't touched Starcraft for like 3-4 months now because I was getting really busy with finals and AP tests and secondly I just got a little bored. I decided to take a hiatus for a while and play some other stuff like Poker and DotA. When I'm in DC though, if my computer can handle starcraft I'll basically only be playing starcraft and poker and when I get back I'll make some fpvods

I worked in NIH a couple years back, but it was a bit of a lab monkey job so it wasn't the most exciting experience in the world. I wouldn't actually bring a laptop because your supervisor might start yelling at you. What division are you working in? My uncle/dad/whole family floats around NIH.
|
D.C. is fun every time I go. go to the museums if you havent and have the time. (Air & Space is best of course >_>)
|
Cool to know that you are familiar with NIH :D I'm in the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases, Division of Intramural Research under Dr. Lee Weinstein .Think your dad knows him? I didn't really get to pick my division but I didn't really have a preference anyways.
Also about the laptop, I am going to just be using it when I get back to where I will be staying. What division were you in?
|
Hmm, my dad is pretty sure he knows him but probably from a "I've heard of that guy" standpoint. Expect your supervisor to throw a few projects at you, like a paper on your project, the end-of-the-summer poster presentations where people ask you what you did, and maybe even a conference where you present your findings. I was in the Lab of Hematology.
Also, watch out for the food =( crazy overpriced and not that great. BYOLunch.
|
Have you done any research before?
It will probably be like most other research experiences if you have. Well, actually it probably depends on what the person you're working under is like and what they'll have you do. While I haven't worked at NIH specifically, I have done some other stuff in the Gaithersburg area that's in the same vein (270 tech corridor). Depending on what your guy does (he may work with people... or he may work with rats and such) you can probably expect some different kind of stuff -- probably along the lines of what hazelynut said.
And yes, make your own food and bring it.
I may or may not come to a LAN... since I'm terrible at SC, hah.
|
Heh when I heard you say research projects I was like "Oh god..." but actually I think it sounds okay. Is the food sold by NIH themselves? I guess I'll bring my own food but I will have to find out what to do for that hah. BYOL xD Hazely and eshlow you both live around d.c.? We should definitely organize a LAN sometime I've gone to a lot of LANs near where I live in Berkeley and it's really quite amazing.
hazely iirc aren't you the commentator who is also now leading one of the college teams in the college proleague?

NIH = easy metro access =P Check out Georgetown if you haven't already ^^ :D
|
Yeah, I'm about 20-30 mins from Rockville/Bethesda/Gaithersburg.
There's quite a few people around the area I think especially in Baltimore. I think there was a thread on DC/MDers a few months back (or maybe longer with one of the events for quals like WCG last year) which is how I found out there was a lot of us.
