I watched an episode of PurePwnage. The fifth one of the second episode. In the first few minutes the episode contained a very interesting intro. I cut and uploaded it in 2shared, here's the link: http://www.2shared.com/file/6148731/ea352247/Pure_Pwnage_Intro.html

Someone can upload to YouTube and embed it.

It made me think about the gameplay and the old games. I am talking about games like SC, Heroes III, Quake II and Quake III, Half Life, Fallout, Baldur's gate, Icewind Dale, CS back in 2000-2001, Diablo I and II. And they all have some sick sick gameplay. Most of them have great story but that's not the point. I never took the time to look up to Diablo's backstory or Heroes III. I just played them and I had some great time.
While really - the games the children play today... OMG! Flashy stuff for sure, eyecandy - yes. But of boy, do they really SUCK BALLS!!! I mean... How many epic games have been released in the last 7 years and how many in 1998-2000?

I consider myself an old gamer, I am 25 now and I play since 12 year old. And it really makes me sad when I see the new games and how shitty they are and how not even one of them (save WoW, hands down, I love it but I'll never start it LOL) has this old feeling where the game makes you stay like 8-9 hours and just keep playing and want more...

What do you guys think?

Are we the last generation of gamers who just wanted to feel the game and the gameplay instead of the flashy effects?

I know right, after the N64 there's been pretty much no good games. Just commercialized crap for the masses.

there are plenty of games out there with good gameplay, but honestly not to the same extent as in the past. We arent the last generation to like games, cause im not from your generation- I turned seventeen two days ago. But I've played sc since it came out, etc. And I know many people my age who play games I do, or play games as dedicatedly as I do.

Don't get me wrong, I fucking love old school games and can't stand the majority of new shit that keeps being released, but here's one perspective as a devil's advocate here:

When we were kids and playing old school games, not only did we have more time on our hands, but we had less experience, so we were easily enthralled. Now that we're old, our demands are a lot higher since the cream of the crop from years of gaming have raised our expectations dramatically. I don't know about you, but sometimes I get disappointed by old school games (ones I never played and thus have no bias towards) too.

I mean how many of those games that you listed would you be willing to spend dozens of hours on again? For me only SC.

I liked Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country 1, 2, 3 for SNES I want games like that again, and not just lame shooting side scrollers that aren't creative.

But as to how many good games have been created since 2000? Eternal Darkness, Super Mario Galaxy, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Countless FPS horrors that I'll never get to try because my computer isn't powerful enough, Half Life 2, lots of people love GTA (although I don't own PS or Xbox so I don't really know), Luigi's Mansion...

Lots of really fun games. Every times someone says "well back in my day" I get a big kick out of it. Back in your day things were just as commercialized and bullshit. I can't give a huge huge list because I only own Nintendo consoles, and the only video game I really ever play is StarCraft... But I know if you own the newest x-box, there's plenty of stuff for you to have fun with. New Bond games too, which are never bad.

Edit: Also, Portal looks fun as hell :O

In response to Chef about "well back in my day" - I played Heroes III many years ago when I was small. I found a torrent for it two months ago and downloaded it to my laptop, and then brought it to campus at uni. Many people there knew the game too, we played it and had tons of fun. For like two weeks it became the main discussion topic, between people who don't even usually play computer games at all.
Old games - not all of them - many suck balls, but those that we felt were good back in the day really are good and still fun today. It wasn't as bullshit in the past because back then the designers' experience with making games was very limited and thus the stuff they created was always unique.
Today, like 9 out of 10 games feel like a clone of another game that was successful that try to copy that success, and just add some gimmick to make that clone supposedly different, and this is why many games today feel like bullshit and don't really stand out.
Reavers. Lurkers. Vultures. Defilers. Corsairs. Vessels. Why did they remove all the cool units from SC2...?

dude, no. look at angry video game nerd. There were just as many crappy clones back in the day as there are now- more in fact, the video game market was losing popularity for a while in the 80's cause the quality of games were so bad.

I'm not saying old games suck. I'm saying new games don't suck anymore than old games did. Super Mario Galaxy is a super unique fun game with lots of interesting challenges. It's as fun as Super Mario World and Super Mario 64 were in their times.

There were so many crappy clone games back in the day... The type of clone games that have almost exactly the same title, trying to steal the brand value. I know how many crappy old games there are because I have a friend who impulsively spends money on 1-5$ games which are always super old. About 1 in every 15 are actually fun, and even then you're usually still giving huge sympathy points to the fact that they were developed a gazillion years ago.

its just like videogames nowadays are a major part of the entertainment sector and therefore major companies do produce and sell them.
of course, back then everyone wanted to make money as well, but then it was just nerds who wanted to make money. nowadays theres a shitton of ppl in charge who dont have a clue about videogames.

This video was a takeoff of yahtzees videos from zero punctuation for those who dont know.
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/zero-punctuation?page=1

But it brings up a damn good point. Games these days are about trying to cash in on something else that was successful rather than trying to make something new and unique. Usually in other industries and walks of life, you can try to build a refined version of something else, or a new product idea. If your refined version isnt as good as the original, you crash and burn, however in the gaming market it seems you dont, making it a very lucrative field for companies to mass produce games in.

Nothing can be done about it but change the opinions of the gaming market. However seeing as increased accessibility has turned into the majority of the market into people who care only for car crashes and explosions, thats unlikely to change anytime soon.

Ahhh! They were then too! How many times must it be said. This is how business works. Competitors see another business do something successful, and then they try to emulate it. There are still unique games being made amongst the giant pile of clones, just like back in the day. The only difference is thru the power of nostalgia, everyone here is forgetting all the shitty games. In 10 years people will only remember the good games that came out this generation too.

I really hate the new trend in gaming to add these so called "quick time events." Seriously, watching a cinematic and pressing a button a certain time isn't fun or entertaining at all.

No you are plain wrong. Look at Wii. They made something incredibly unique and fun. They are the only reason there are ANY good console games left. The thing we are trying to communicate to you is that these games are now recognized as being good instead of the no talent piece of shit games they are.

I love Final Fantasy and after 10 they all went to shit. Did anyone notice? FUCK NO. They all said 12 was better than ever and that the MMO was incredible until the mother of all clone games(WOW) came out. Today its about taking the same shit that made CS fun and shoving it back u p our asses with a better look and new character models. God of War was a great game, but nothing special. Guess what. God of War 2 is JUST like God of War and God of War 3 will be the same fucking game. Sure there will always be the people who copy, but now those games are RECOGNIZED as GOOD.

PERFECT EXAMPLE: Halo is one of the greatest fps's ever made. It has a lot of skill and the things they did with shields was revolutionary. Now every console fps has a life recharging mode pretty much all fps's (Including Halo II and Halo III) all left creativity and skill out the door Gears of War anyone?) and downright copied Halo 1. Call of Duty IV even has fucking regenerating health and a radar for fucks sake.
There are a lot of people who have realized they can call bullshit and bitch and the next one wont be so hard. So while i sit down to play the next SC2 and everyone realizes how much MBS and automining really do knock the level of difficulty down a notch, I will shed a tear and watch the best game ever made be turned into a piece of shit over the next few decades.
Whatever happens, happens.

This is the same thing people complain about with music. The thing is, the only music thats still around today from way back when is the good stuff.

The only video games around today from way back when are the good ones. You can complain and spout profanities about others' parents all you want, but the truly good games from our generation won't reveal themselves until later. Tell me you've never had a heart-thumping cerebral moment playing halo with a bunch of friends over LAN, or that you didn't figure out how to take down a colossus and feel really accomplished--and at the same time feeling bad you killed something awesome.

What this OP and that video with the guy with the accent sounds like to me is "Back in my day we did shit right. Today you guys are fucking up. Quit fucking up." There have definitely been great games released, and the only difference is the technology. You just gotta look for them.
