(it just goes on and on, you can always find the next episode in the links on the bottom right)

So there was already a thread about episodes 1-12 of the Hip Hopera Trapped in the Closet. R Kelly released 13-22 like um 2 years ago and this summer it's the next 10 chapters .

As a music major I just have nothing but praise for this shit. Fuck me it's excellent! I mean I love Beethoven, Stravinsky, The Beach Boys, Megadeth...you name it. And I have to put this utterly random comedy-drama up with the great works in music probably because of how incredibly gripping it is. I mean, it's an absolute drama fest. It's hyper drama, almost ghetto drama lol.

Constant twists and turns. It's so great because it literally steps miles over the line...but always remains very observant of human feelings. It's a very human work. Even if the language is well, not necessarily artistic language...it's perfectly fine as a work. Perfectly valid. And of course by the way R Kelly's singing is fucking great, and as a song, this song is just unbelievably well made...being only a 2 chord vamp for over like 90 minutes. 2 chords for 90 minutes...and as a musician I was still completely rapt the whole time. Very good technical use of tension.

It's so surprising because I thought all R Kelly was good for was inviting ladies of questionable age into his after-after-post-after hotel party after-lobby 3 am party room. But this is some good shit!

Wonder if anyone hasn't seen it, check it out! It's a great, over-the-top but sympathetic story. Good shit man!

Ps Youtube completely fucks up my attempts to write essays fuck it ¬¬.

This is what you consider excellent? jesus christ...

I watched parts 1-12, and all i can say is that it is the most pathetic example of song writing i have ever had the distate of listening to.

This appeals to the lowest of the low in terms of musical taste.

Look, mate, I love EVERYTHING...and there's no way anyone HAS to like this...but if you wrote music yourself...you would acknowledge that this is very well written. I don't know what your music tastes are, but I KNOW that what I consider 'excellent' would include at least 1 band that you also love, seeing as I love EVERYTHING from Radiohead to Rachmaninoff to Rage Against the Machine. All I'm saying is you don't have to be so derogatory just because you disagree aesthetically.

Ps anyone who says anything like 'lowest of the low' when talking about hip hop is just...well all I can do is facepalm...yjdk.

I do write music, and this is just garbage, im amazed that someone can praise this. You don't praise a dog for shitting in the house, and you don't praise R.Kelly for crapping in your ears.

PS. kefkalives you're just ignorant and young. That's not to say I'm not also young and ignorant, but in music I would probably say I'm less ignorant than you. You might write a little music on the side, but you don't know shit about the technicalities of creating tension if you think R Kelly's Trapped in the Closet is badly written. Gime an example of a band you like...

Sure thing Mr. HamerD!

right now my favourite album is Lou Reed's Berlin. I have never listened to such an emotionally charged album. Have you listened to it? That is an album i consider to have quality writing. Care to comment, or give your opinion on the album?

My top 10 Artists on last.fm, in descending order;

1. Leo Kottke
2. Deathcab for Cutie
3. Defiance, Ohio
4. Lou Reed
5. Daft Punk
6. The Velvet Underground
7. System of a Down
8. Nine Inch Nails
9. Alice Cooper
10. Neil Young

Ofcourse though, your some musical savant who appreciates all music and has an indepth understanding of the creative process a musician goes through. You are truly unique!

right

I have to admit the only artists I know well out of your list are 5, 7 and 9. And look you don't have to be so damn sarcy. I know that I have liked Death cab, Lou Reed, Velvet Underground, Neil Young. I think Nine Inch Nails are total shite aesthetically but very accomplished songwriters. I would probably rate Daft Punk and soad around 7/10 as far as comparing them to all artists ever, and the rest of your bands 6 or less. But as songwriters, I would put all of them up around 8 and above. Can't say I've ever heard of Defiance of Leo Kottke before though.

Not particularly surprised you don't aesthetically like R Kelly. All I can say is that you just aren't trying hard enough to appreciate the songwriting of R Kelly's Trapped in the Closet. So do you like Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd or The Rolling Stones?

I am unfamiliar with the word Sarcy. Could you please provide a definition for it?

Pink Floyd are a huge passion of mine, and there was a period in my life where i would listen to atleast 3 of their records a day. I am familiar with bob dylan, and the rolling stones.

I also know of Tommy Emmanuel. He is good, however i think he can't compare with Kottke.

Defiance, Ohio are an American Indie Folk Punk band, who have one of the most breathtakingly refreshing sounds I have ever heard.

After the gold rush and Harvest are two of the best albums ever recorded if you ask me. I once made a blog post about the brilliance of Harvest which was largely ignored.

Funny how this thread has turned from you flaunting your ego musically into one of (almost) forced humility.

This gets better the longer you listen to it.

During the first couple minutes, I was about to turn it off and stop listening, but by about 10 mins in, it was much better.

I said 'know well'. I know enough about them to know they are good songwriters. But, saying that you need to know NIN intimately in order to know 'anything about music' is like saying you need to have intimate anatomical knowledge of flatworms if you want to be a doctor. To compile a list of songwriters who are more important than Trent Reznor would take several days. That's not to say he's bad, just that he's a tiny blip on the Radar of music composition when compared to artists such as:

Lennon/ McCartney, Bernstein, Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Beethoven, Lizst, Debussy, Dylan, Wilson, Rogers/ Hammerstein, Gershwin, Brahms, Bartok, Janacek, NWA, Metallica, The Ramones, The Cardiacs, Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Robert Johnson, Miles Davis, John Coltrane etcetc the list goes on for years and years I could probably name you 500 artists before I got to Neil Young or NIN.

But again, that doesn't in ANY WAY invalidate Neil Young or Reznor as songwriters. They aren't that important in music's history and they aren't in any way near my favourite artists, but I can recognize their quality as songwriters. One of the most important things about being a musician is learning how good everything is, and how everything has quality. You can tell a good musician apart from a charlatan simply because the good one has an open mind. I mean I personally think your music taste is beyond shit Inc, but I'm sure most of the bands you like have good songwriters, and I wouldn't take that away from any of the whiny, angry, retarded hardcore bands you like.

You have to remember that all of the music you see is a tiny percentage of all the stuff out there. It all needs quality to make it out there, quality of some sort or another. One of the most impressive talents R Kelly displays in Trapped in the Closet is his effortless ability to fit the words of any one of his lines into the scansion of the song without having to subscribe to any straight set of rhythmic rules; and do it in such a way that it's not jarring. I mean, even if you dislike the song, have a listen to it, can you at least be impressed by that? And, can you really fail to spot the growing dynamics of each chapter as he winds up towards another revelation? That is good songwriting. And like I said, the fact that he only uses two chords is not only impressive, it's damn original. Trapped in the Closet is pretty bewilderingly original.

You've got to be kidding me. First of all sarcy means sarcastic. Second, how was I ever flaunting my ego?! And do you understand the concept of diplomacy? As stupid as it may seem to you, I am the sort of person who is NICE to people who show even a GLIMMER of niceness BACK at me. Is that so foreign? Because of the fact that you actually took your time to post a list of your favourite artists, I responded by being NICE and taking an interest back. I haven't assumed a position of humility, I would like to treat you as an equal but I can tell you now that if you don't have any capacity for open-mindedness in music, and you dismiss any aesthetically displeasing work as crap and the person who likes it as crap, it's hard not to have contempt for you.

I mean, you want to talk about amazing songwriting coupled with (at least for people who first hear it) aesthetic displeasure? See how much you like this man, one of the greatest 20th century composers:

Played by two of the greatest musicians to ever have lived. (and to do a bit of name dropping, I have a friend who was best friends with the pianist and my auntie was the housekeeper of the violinist :D)

(As a little aside the violinist Yehudi Menuhin thought Schoenberg, the composer, was most displeasing, but still appreciated the quality of his writing. Just like you might think R Kelly's song displeasing, it still has its merits, you should accept that)

being only a 2 chord vamp for over like 90 minutes. 2 chords for 90 minutes...and as a musician I was still completely rapt the whole time. Very good technical use of tension.

Monotonous! tediously repetitive.

t's a great, over-the-top but sympathetic story.

Story was nothing special at all if I wanted to see something like that I'd watch a soap opera. Didn't R.Kelly piss on some underage girls or something lol

Haha, wow, that post is going to be painfully difficult for you to live up to lol.

Not saying I have any qualities that make me worthy but...lol.
