and I'd like to hear input from TLers who've been to Spain or are from Spain. I'm going to be staying in Basque Country in the city of Getxo and going to school at the University of Basque Country in Bilbao, so suggestions of things to do, places to see/go to, recommendations of food/drink, andcustoms/cultures to be aware of would be greatly appreciated. While so far everything I've mentioned as been very general (I've done some research, but admittedly not enough), what I'm really looking for are places/things that aren't what every tourist does while in Spain. So any suggestions/help would be awesome. Thanks!

I should probably mention that I'll be there from June until August, so events that take place during these months would be awesome.

I'm fairly sure you'll be there around the time of the bull run in pamplona, so thats definitely something worth doing, or just going to see. Its less 2 hours drive away from bilbao. Another thing is you'll be there for bastille day, so you could hop across the border to france for some spectacular fireworks and plenty of traditional entertainment. Another french festival, the Fête de Bayonne, starts on the 29th of July. Bayonne is about 1h 30min from bilbao, (just over the french border) and during the festival theres loads of really top quality food, mostly ham and pork, but plenty of other stuff as well. Theres a Jazz festival in San Sebastian the last week in july as well, which is about an hour away. If you don't have a car over there, there are trains going to most of these places too.

You can always read 'The Sun Also Rises' and do whatever Hemingway does. He's in the Basque Country for half of the novel.

Thanks for the input. The bull runs at Pampolina in the first week of July, I'm for sure going to; The Guggenheim is also a definite. Gaudi's architecture is a definite maybe, but I had no idea about the French stuff. I'll look more into that. Thanks!

Also, from what I heard, people walk alot and it's not like America. Most things are slower paced, like you get 2 hours for lunch and stuff. Enjoy! Can you speak spanish?

un poco. I've been told rollerblading and skateboarding are the preferred forms of transportation (if you're not using car/bus/train). 2 things I don't really know how to do well heh.
