So, I've been listening to a lot of what I THINK is Alternative (Forgive me, I listen to mostly Trance and progressive) and i'm looking to expand this! So here's some of what I like, with Youtube videos, so yeah! RECCOMEND ME !
I'm not interested in Metal, really. I followed it fairly heavily around the time 10,000 Fists came out (it's like my only reference point - sorry) and i'm really done with it.
Also note that the Video's may be live perfomances or crap, i'm only interested in the music, thanks . The songs i'm including are also just examples, I like more from these artists than what I include.
Bloc Party are amazing, definitely +1 for them. Snow Patrol, Coldplay, Kings of Leon, Radiohead, Arcade Fire, Killers, Muse, Sigur Rós, R.E.M. Most of these are fairly mainstream but have a listen anyway.
Just a couple more as I thought of them: MGMT, The Kooks and BellX1

Dredg (like everyone else has said), The Delgados, Naked Empire, Hello Madness
If you're into proggy stuff, you might like post-rock shit like, Pelican, ISIS, Russian Circles, Red Sparowes.
Also, they're considered prog metal, but I highly recommend trying out Dream Theater (if you can get over the bad vocalist).
BTW...for Dredg...I can't remember the name of the song that got me into them...I don't think it was on an album. For some reason "Building the Church" comes to mind, but that may just be because I listened to the Vai song a lot at teh same time. Can anyone help me out? I haven't re-added Dredg to my library since my last hard drive broke.

Handsome Furs and Wolf Parade are my favourite bands. You really have to let Spencer's voice grow on you though, because Wolf Parade has two different singers. Spencer does half the songs and Dan does the other half. I used to hate his voice and now I love it, and that has happened with a lot of my friends. You can't find much of their stuff on youtube though, besides live performances, so try limewire or something.
Dan is also in both bands. Handsome Furs was his side project with his fiance (now wife), but they turned into a band (duo?) when Sub Pop signed them. They make good fucking music for just them two.
