This is what my teachers/principal in school would do when someone did something really bad, call on them and then make them sit there and sweat while they went on about their business, until THEY were ready.
Not that I agree with it, but it scares the shit out of you and makes you reflect on the situation, specially if you have no idea why you're there.
Works on children, I don't think it's something you should be doing to your significant other though not if you have any respect for them. Not something that I would do, but hey it worked for you.. this time.
The silent treatment is a powerful tool, but you need to use it wisely. Use it until your g/f breaks and asks what's wrong, at that point you can discuss it. It truly eats up at them and they start to think some fucked up shit if you keep closed.
