So today is the first day of my Spring 09 semester. I woke up as usual, paid for my bus and proceeded to take the train to the university.
But as soon as I got out, there were these two stupid cops asking everyone to show them their pass. To be honest, I did not know that train required you to have one, and I have been doing so for a full year, going in an out, back and forth with no problems.
Well it happens that I forgot my wallet at home and didn't have ANYTHING on me that served as an ID. He asked me for my name, adress, age, etc, but since we moved not long ago, I did not know of my new address, so I gave him one which I think doesn't even exist.
He told me to go to court the 24th and that I had to pay a $150 USD fee, and that this would show on my record.
I got so damn pissed I didn't even look at him in the face and just nodded at his bullshit for the rest of the time he spent on spitting that garbage out of his mouth. I was so damn pissed I took all he gave me and threw it away on the nearest trash can and I hope he saw me doing so.
I'm not a US citizen yet, and I'm literally poor, I have no money, I won't be eating today for serious. I can't pay that shit amount of money atm.
Should I go to court? These dudes don't even know me or where I live, I got no papers.
What would you do??

|
edit: nvm, misunderstood what was going on.
If you've been taking the train for a year, seems like you owe them some money at least.
|
|
Do not pay. Normally i'd say you should, but seeing you have no money, i would condone not paying anything, there are more serious things then have no ticket for the train.
|
What the fuck? Why do you have to show anything if you payed to ride on public transport?
|
Yeah and while this dude is writing all this shit on that paper there are a thousand people walking past him that just got out of the metro.
|
If you gave him your real name and your in the system then throwing the paper in the garbage and not showing up won't fix everything.
Little fyi.
|
Dog the Bounty Hunter is gonna fuck you up if you don't show
|
How would they even ever know if you gave them a BS address? Don't go. You paid for the bus ride right? wtf.
And your not a US citizen yet? Should have given him a fake name.
|
I PAID FOR THE RIDE. Just because I didn't show them my pass they are charging me $150 now? T.T
I can literally eat for three weeks with that money.
|
Or you could go to court and appeal it. Bring the pass and just explain that you forgot it that day and tell them what you told us. That you rode the bus all the time with no problem and wasn't even aware of needing the pass. Are there signs posted saying you NEED to have the pass to ride the bus? Is that made very well known? You could probably appeal that.
|
Ehhh so you been free riding the train everyday for a year and today you got caught...?
|
lol racist cops, milking money from foreigners
|
|
They actually have signs all over the place saying you need the pass t.t but no one has ever done that for the past year, even hobos get in the train ez pz.

Hahaha. HAHAHA. Why are all people who get tickets the same? It's always like: "I was doing something clearly illegal. The officer gave me a ticket for this. Fuck him!"

Then you just got owned; bad timing.

yeah chill but what if you along with another couple thousand people have been doing the same thing for exactly 1 year, 6 months, 15 days ?

That's irrelevant though. When you get ticketed for speeding, you will be laughed at if you reply with "hey, but what about all the other tens of hundreds of thousands of people that speed every day that got away with it?". Of course we all skimp out on things but if you get caught while going against regulations by the authority there isn't really much you can do.

I see no reason to complain. If you have given them wrong contact info, what are you worrying about anyway?

So now it is the fault of all the other people that you didn't have a ticket?

If you do this i doubt you will have to pay. Also they might not keep it on your record. If you just ignore the fine then it will stay with you.
|
where are you right now?(us i assume because of usd) there are of course, laws. but anyways, you should appeal it. even if you fail you could talk to the prosecutors and lower the charges.
|
Like they said, if you gave them the wrong info, nothing to worry about! Except they look for you the next time.
|
but the thing is that all of my life ive been kind of like the "good guy" and just the thought of me getting into problems with the authorities breaks me down to pieces.
my parents are in europe helping me pay for my tuition and rent, i work as a math tutor and get paid like $10/h i barely have enough to buy some ramen noodles.
besides, what would they say to me if i tell them i gotta go to court? you know my parents are expecting i graduate with honors T.T
edit: lol they're giving free food right now, brb

oh and think of it this way, tomorrow, theyll catch someone else thats in your place. just that today, youre in someone elses shoes.

^-------- What you should do btw, thats what court is for. It's when people skip out and forfeit their right to argue that they get fucked. If you explain the entire situation and appologize maybe they let you off.

sorry its just that i come from a country in which the word "authorities" doesn't even exist in the dictionary.
cops are more corrupt than the criminals themselves, and i have developed a negative image of them.
ill have to talk to my parents today.......................................................................
|
That's a hefty fine.
Unrelated, but a few years ago the fine for no ticket was £20, and they didn't always check for tickets (they check more often and have gates now). On off-peak journeys it was more worthwhile to not buy a ticket since it cost about £15 anyway. In the long run you would save money even if you got caught every other time.

Also, when I realized no one checked the tickets in Calgary for the train, I just rode without one. I'd carry an old ticket in my coat to show in a pinch (ie. never). I'd always check the platform for cops before I got off, and if they were there (like twice in 18 months), I'd just ride to the next station, buy a ticket and then ride back up. Easy.
|
Ah, bad luck.
You didn't give them your real name did you? If you did the best thing is to go to court and explain the situation. If they have your name there is a chance they will find you, and then you will be fucked.

wtf you had ticket but no passpart so you have to pay 150$

From what I understand, he had a bus ticket but didn't take a transfer when he went to the train.

if you cant afford to pay the fine, just explain your situation to the judge. You might be able to get away with a little bit of community service and no fine.

I guess the OP took the bus which he paid for but he didn't pay for the subsequent train ride, in which you'd need a ticket for the proof of payment. I've been through this once after I haven't rode the train for like a year, and apparently, they got a lot more strict. Just pay next time, it's not worth going through those cops. And you did deserve it.

He said that "he comes from a place where..." refering to venezuela... its almost like that everywhere in south america

All trains i know you have to keep your ticket as proof of purchase. Hell even muni (which is more like a inner city bus then a train but you can get on from like 8 doors and no one checks) in SF you have to keep a transfer ticket on you as proof you payed.

I did pay for both the bus and train but when the cops caught me they wanted me to show them my ID. There's where things got crazy.

Yeah, but because of cheeky fuckers who scammed the trains all the time the fine is now like £1000, at least in the London area.

If you have no ID then how did they know who to write the ticket out to?

I second this. Most tickets have a little mark on the back that says "I did it but here's why I'm not going to pay you" go for that

well if he told them his name, that's pretty easy. Although you would think that with not knowing where he lived, and not having any id, he would be able to say whatever name he wanted.

Your parents don't have to know. And if you do decide to tell them, I can almost guarantee you one of them has gotten into way worse trouble than anything you've ever done. Ask your parents to tell you some childhood stories sometime. Pretty much everyone does something idiotic at one time or another.
Solution: Don't go to Court. Court is for people who have citizenship. You will be asked to show documentation in court, and you don't have it. Hope you aren't awesome and that you didn't give that cop your exact address by fluke memory.

in the US you have to show your ID to ride the train? that sounds so soviet...

Only if you missing proof of purchase. Who else they going to make the fine out to Joe Fakename?

raptor clarify this, did you pay for the train but throw your train ticket in the garbage?
or did you pay for the train and had a train ticket with you, but the cops fined you for not having photo ID on you?
if it's scenario 1, then why would you throw your train ticket out?
if it's scenario 2, then i am flabbergasted that you require photo ID to ride a train, that is so soviet
|
Bought the ticket ditched it and landed the train that gets inspected for illegal riders like 1 in 10000 chance lacked the ticket as proof he wasn't free riding police asked him for id he seemed to forget it and then it got muckyy is what i believe happened.
He's just mad for being punished when he did nothing really wrong except to keep his proof of purchase ie a ticket which is fine when they don't check which would porb be like 99% of the time.
|
Clarification
I paid for the bus I paid for the train They don't give out tickets anymore But I had what they call a "Q Card" in my wallet They wanted me to show it to them As well as my ID
Got pwned
|
so why do you need a Q card
|
because its a new "faster" way to pay. its pretty much like a credit card which you can refill and stuff... i have it empty and if I want i can just simply show it to them and shut their mouths up
|
I don't get it? what is a Q card? Why do you need to produce an ID when you've paid for the trip?
Is Q card some sort of prove of concession or something?
If you didn't give them your real details, just fuck them. I've done this many times (when i was a poor, struggling student). One time the fuckers even followed me and got back on to the train when i got back on (I got off when they asked for tickets).
As far as i know, if they don't have your real details then it's almost impossible for them to track you down.
