Warning- If you're not a big Zerg fan the following blog may excite feelings of contempt in you. Read on at your own peril...

First, only one Zerg made it to the final four of the Incruit OSL (GGplay, eliminated by Fantasy).
Then only one Zerg made it to the final eight of the Club Day MSL (Yellow [arnc], eliminated 3-0 by Jangbi).
+ Show Spoiler +
Now only one Zerg is left in the final 16 of the GOM Classic (Hoejja) and let's face it, barring some miracle, he probably won't make it to the next round. So there probably won't be a single Zerg left in the final eight.

Already two of the more decent Zerg players (GGplay and July) have been eliminated from the MSL survivor tournament for next season too.

Zerg are doing bad this season and the prospects are not good for the next either. OK, I know some people will bring up the WCG and the Blizzard Invitational where Luxury and Savior took out the top prizes but for most of us fans these events do not really compare to the main Korean leagues and it is in the main Korean leagues where zerg are really doing the worst.

The main reason seems to be the renaissance of the protoss. Zerg have always had it hard against the terrans and we've come to accept that and prize the wins when they come and the few Zerg players who can win consistently against terrans. But recently, protoss players, particularly Best, Free, Bisu and Jangbi are really starting to dominate the zerg as well.

Protoss fans will no doubt be saying 'about time!. They had to suffer several years of humiliation at the hands of legendary protoss-killers July and Savior.

But spare a thought for us zerg fans. There really has been little to cheer about recently. Savior's 'comeback' has faltered, Jaedong seems to be slipping, GGplay is still inconsistent GGplay, luxury and yellow [arnc] are still not great vs Protoss and the new tantalising prospects in the proleague (Zero and Effort) aren't really performing well in the individual leagues yet.

As for the foreign scene, well, with a few notable exceptions, at the top, it's pretty much just a Protoss circle-jerk.

Where will it all end?

Races have gone through bad periods before and managed to bounce back (except for those bastard terrans who have always managed to do consistently pretty well ) so I hope that can be the case with this recent slump of the zerg. And it has only been one season of badness (the season before July did get the OSL win and Jaedong did get to the MSL final and win the first GOM classic).

This rise of the protoss does worry me however. Their tactics, skill and timing just seem so hard to beat these days. I hope the people in charge of choosing the maps at the major leagues try to choose some more Zerg-friendly maps next season before those die-hard Zerg fans like me do something really stupid like stop spending hours and hours watching Starcraft games.

Yeah, the recent lack of zergs in the korean leagues also make me worry. I agree that there hasn't really been any good zergs lately, especially with jaedong slipping. I'm not too sure what to make of it as a zerg player and fan. I just hope that soon, zerg will bounce back and at least have more than 1 or 2 players in the ro8s.

Yeah, it's depressing. It's definitely the funnest race to watch; I can only handle so much PvP and TvP.

My faith rests with a new generation of zerg. I just don't think many of the old players are going to adapt to the current protoss, aside from maybe Jaedong. It's up to players like HoeJJa, ZerO, Thezerg, ect.

I'm just sad about Jaedong, even last season there was one or two good zergs, all the others were unnotable, it's just that these zergs still managed to get the championships. Now, with the rise of protoss, our last hopes have been extinguished. Time to wait it out...

2-3 years ago, you could litterally just swap the words 'Protoss' and 'Zerg' in this post and it would fit just fine.

It'll change... it always does. That's why this game is so incredible, no one race dominates for long, as the only people who think there is an imbalance haven't been following the proscene for very long.

we have the best late game units possible in the ultralisk, defiler, and crackling.
the trouble is getting there, we cant seem to stand up to any protosses early game right now

savior describes perfectly the current state of the zerg players. Yes, there is a lot of potential in the top zerg players and on a given day they could win games against all the terrans ans tosses with ez. The thing is thou when you look on the top tear tosses atm bisu and stork and pay attention to their playing style you will observe constant evolution. By the time of his slump Bisu could only DT drop a terran and stork was going 2 base carriers like a complete idiot. But both learned to mix up their BOs and strategies, both manage to adapt. The zerg on the other hand are showing absolutely no will to change anything in their playing style. July is still doing his all-in-ish hydra pushes in ZvP, savior usually gets stuck with his 3 base fast hive builds in ZvT and gets destroyed. Historically no top level zerg managed to come back after a slump. You would say July won recently the golden mouse but he did it using his old ZvP and ZvZ tactics. And if the 2 base carrier was storks only option during his slump I think you can say the same about JD and his doomdrops. He goes it every time when he is completely clueless... like in the wcg match vs stork. When the +1 speedlots was getting raped by saviors mutas, Bisu came up with his sair/dt builds and turned the things around . Maybe the zerg players should sit down and analyze their playing style. They need to adapt

zerg is so unstable, fragile units..just easier to lose a game

i also think zerg is underpowered vs protoss late game, reavers and archons really are unbeatable, if u dont kill protoss b4 they get enough resources to get a reaver/archon army u are done.

Jaedong is just so good though..he will overcome, he is in my opinion the most talented player, out of all races.

As a Protoss player, I find it sad that Zerg aren't doing so hot in starleagues. It's no fun watching just Protoss, only Protoss, and nothing but Protoss.

TBH, I would prefer an era of Zerg dominance. More fun hoping for a Protoss revolutionist try to overcome the odds...

Yeah thats true. In that Bisu & Stork interview Bisu said something like this:

"I couldn't understand why all protoss players were so stubborn. They kept doing their +1 zealot timing attacks even tho everybody knew Savior loved his mutalisks"

It's the same now maybe. The players need to analyze deeply like Bisu did and come up with new playstyles.

Agreed. Zerg definitely provide the best games. Any mix of P and T is good for a while, but I feel like ZvX is a funner game to watch.

Wasn't it Jaedong who trashed Bisu using new tactics? I don't remember the games clearly but he was certainly inspiring to the other zergs when Bisu became less unstoppable

I think that Zerg is easily the hardest race to play.

You just can't screw up. They are ridiculously fragile. If your timing and micro aren't perfect, you are f'ed up the butt. To me, Terran have so many second chances with SK Terran style, and Protoss can hide behind cannons. They can do insane amount of damage with just 1 HT or DT, Terrans can Irradiate you endlessly while it's an uphill battle for the Zerg. Zerg is seriously an art and it brings truth to Savior's nickname Maestro. Zerg will dominate again, but right now it is a season of determination and re-innovation for us.

I agree with z is the hardest race, not because I play it or anything (I've played every race for a few months at some time or another) but it really is the hardest. People I play on iccup just sit and do very basic mechanics while I have to do mechanics+make good decisions+have more expos than them.

I can't count the number of games I've lost to weaker players who just a-moved into my third before I had enough defense and ended up beating me. Once late game comes along we are strong enough to fight them with defilers and ultras, but unless you want to play the style of turtling on 4 gas massing ultraling you need to have impeccable defiler + scourge control to be successful. That old school savior style of play where he had basically lurkling/defiler is so artful and amazing to watch, but it requires so much skill and experience to do successfully it's frustrating.
