In particular it limits how many times you can install a game on different machines using your serial number. Which means that changing some of your hardware, for example, will lead to the game thinking that you are using a new machine and making you use up another installation. It requires activation over Internet on installation, and some versions went as far as to require Internet authentication each time you start the game. People are pissed because basically the companies demand similar amount of money as they used to before for their games, but under a totally different terms of use. I.e. you can do whatever you want with you Starcraft CD, install it and play it whenever and wherever you like. With Red Alert 3, for example, you cannot install it without a working Internet connection, you cannot give it to a friend because of the limited installations number, you are not guaranteed that in some years the authentication servers will even work and you will be able to install your game. There were actually precedents where a company ceased to exist, shut down their authentication servers and as such made all their previously sold DRM-protected software unusable. People are also pissed because this only affects a legit user. Pirated versions appear as fast as they did before, and clean of this stupid protection, thus much easier to use. There were precedents where companies used no copy protection whatsoever, and their sales were as good as anybody's else. I feel really bad for the actual developers who put their heart and talent into the games only to be butchered by soulless corporate executives. Very good explanation

Funny/sad thing is though that DRM will lead to more piracy (because only the pirated versions will work without any restrictions!) and that will make EA think they need even more protections in the future. If they don't realize soon that they're fighting against their customers (not against the pirates, there's no stopping it anyway) by introducing such crap, their games will continue to not meet the sale expectations. Good games will sell even when they have zero copy protections. Sins of a Solar Empire is one such example, it sold very well and there are no problems with it (except that it's Windows only, that should be fixed... :p). The chances of EA realizing this are small though, and other game companies (or rather: publishers) will also continue to restrict their games even more. But you can only fool your customers so much, at some point all will realize that they're buying crap over which they don't have any control, and then the company will hopefully be in trouble. That point seems to be now.

I don't remember) were down for months after Westwood went down. EA completely ignored and shut down all ways to get to the Westwood games patches etc and doesn't answer to support about those games. Xwis has nothing to do with EA, and both RA2 and Nox online population went very low, that's what I meant with it dying. EA only releases a few patches for every game, and they often make the games worse with each patch. A big reason why they made so much money is because of all those licensed sports games which they make minor updates on every year and sell for same price as before. Worse thing is that there are actually idiots buying those piece of crap games. All those movie licensed games they make are the same, if not worse.
