well I suffer from pretty bad alergies too, I usually take a medication called "Aerius" is like a treatment of 5 pills, you take them before you go to bed, and everytime I take them I can last 3 to 4 months without allergies, I have my bad days and stuff, but nothing like I had when I didn't take this medication. . Maybe you should go see a doctor before trying your mother's pills. Maybe they're good for her, but they won't be as good to you, or it could be the other way around. If you really want to try it, then do so, I don't think anything "too bad" could happen if you did.
Anyways, good luck .

I assume you know that your "allergies" = hayfever... or maybe thats a British term :S
I know this sounds obvious but if you suffer from particularly itchy eyes for example, get eyedrops... or runny nose/sneezing, try nasal sprays.. (Beconase ones are best).
Taking 24hour relief is no big deal apart from cost. I've been taking such pills every summer for the past 10 years with no side effects (that I know of at least lol). Buy a bunch of different brands (with different active ingredients) and see what works for you. The box will tell you which active ingred. it has (Cetirizine hydrochloride, loratadine or acrivastine normally).

It sounds like what you have is worse than anything I have currently. I know of people getting monthly shots too...

Keep in mind when you say 'trying your mother's pills' these are just over the counter 24 hour relief of which I could pick up at any drug store easily... so the implication that I'm piggy backing on my mother isn't negative or anything... not sure if you were implying anything or not. Years ago I spoke to my doctor about it, and he prescribed Zyrtec back when it was prescription.. and I'm guessing I'll get a similar response if I go again. I think it's perfectly safe to experiment with OTC medication during my summer break, and to see my doctor if it isn't good enough.

Yeah I figured that I had hayfever but I prefered to just describe the symptoms directly. I know this sounds obvious but if you suffer from particularly itchy eyes for example, get eyedrops... or runny nose/sneezing, try nasal sprays.. (Beconase ones are best). I think my eye itchiness is too severe at times to simply use eye drops... I dabbled with them years ago with very limited success. I've also tried nasal sprays IIRC... I think these are good items to use when the allergy pill isn't enough on those bad allergy days...

Yeah that's what I'm planning on doing. I'm glad it works for you.

i think u have to get acclimated to the allergens and it takes a few months of exposure to actually develop a reaction
of course this could be totally wrong but it sounds right

I usually take the loratadine active, it works like a charm with me so.
one of my doctors, told me that using nasal sprays, is the worst thing you could ever do, because they relief you for a short amount of time, but the whole thing just sums up, and the next time you have a bad day, is going to be freaking worse.
Maybe it's not the same for all kinds of people, but that's what he told me. My grandma, also, has been using nasal sprays for quite long time, her new doctor told her to stop using them, cause that was the main reason she was having so many bad days. ;p.
Anyways, good luck.

of course this could be totally wrong but it sounds right I also have heard of allergy pills helping you build immunity over time, but I know my 4 hour relief pills work within an hour of taking them, so that can't be the primary effect... I think the benefit of building immunity is important if you have particularly bad allergies where the pill doesn't reduce your symptoms to near 0 by default. Any experienced allergy pill user can feel free to educate us.

I have always suffered allergy caused from cat-fur, but when I was owning a cat for a long period of time and being in the same house / room / whatever for several hours a day, my symptoms vanished. Now that I've spent 2 years away from home (well, precisely 5 days a week, and especially last year I wasn't really much at home on the weekends either) my old symptoms have just returned. I thought it was something else, as I'm sensitive to a few other things, but sadly it kinda got confirmed yesterday
Sucks. I love cats, and I especially love my cat ; [

Although I shouldn't have a cat anyway... I'd play with it when it didn't want to and bug it to death.
