Okay so, I'm taking the civil service exam in June, which means if I'm offered employment I'll probably be off to the Academy at some point in the near future, which means I ought to try to do some stuff to prepare beforehand so I don't show up as the only overweight guy.
I'm not at all concerned with strength training; I'm concerned more with increasing my stamina and agility. I don't really exercise, so I'm not really sure where to start.
I know I should stretch before I do anything to help prevent injuries. I should also stretch after I exercise, correct?
So should I just go walk, do pushups, situps, etc.?

did you just ask if you should stretch before you exercise?
NO DONT DO THAT! EAT UNHEALTHY FOOD AND DRINK AS MUCH MUD AS YOU CAN!
I mean common? What the flying fuck? DID you really just fucking ask if you should stretch before exercising?
Dont floss your teeth and make sure to wear your shoes untied.

Hm, that does seem stupid not that I've read it back to myself. Oh well--I've only have 3 hours of sleep. :/

YOu're not gonna get a job any time soon. There's typically huge waiting list, and guys who were in military service get automatically bumped to the top. You can wait anywhere from liek 6 months to 3 years.
And you're gonna need to do a lot more than walk man... their training isn't a joke. Get to the gym and really bust your ass.

holy shit I just noticed you said you wanted to increase your stamina and agility then said "Should I go for a walk and do pushups."
Rpf if this isnt some kind of dark satire you have no chance in any kind of physical environment. How could someone possibly not know about stretching (as if that could ever be a bad thing) or that walking increases your fucking stamina or agility... wtf.

Stretching is overrated, just warm up abit before you lift heavy weights or before you make a good run. And walking doesen't really increase stamina or agility if your nearby gym has bootcamps and stuff like that go there, they are pretty good with a good leader. And If you wanna get a good stamina anytime soon (the next few months) you really need to work hard, run pretty much every day for an hour or two and other excerises. And for pushups, they are worthless it's alot better to go to a gym and lift weights instead, and there are alot better excerises for the abs than situps.
You really have a tough time ahead of you!

Yeah, the injury prevention theory on stretching has been disproved. You should warm up (cardio is betting than anything) before certain weight lifting, and stretch if you want to increase your flexibility, but it's not really required if you just want to increase your stamina. I think flexibility is including in agility, so maybe it would be important there.

Where did you hear that jibba? About injury prevention.

Uh
Doing _anything_ that has your body move (that includes stretching) prior to an accelerated or stress inducing physical activity does some good. Don't tell me "stretching as injury prevention has been disproved." It doesn't INCREASE the chances of a fucking injury and even if it's benefits are relatively low in the specific realm of injury prevention it DOES help.
Don't speak in absolutes. You will be right more often.

Don't speak in absolutes. You will be right more often. I said warming up is a part of injury prevention and the actual stretching of the muscles does nothing to prevent injuries.
In some cases, it doesn't even improve performance.
The review of the basic science literature suggested five reasons why stretching before exercise would not prevent injuries. First, in animals, immobilization or heating-induced increases in muscle compliance cause tissues to rupture more easily. Second, stretching before exercise should have no effect for activities in which excessive muscle length is not an issue (e.g., jogging). Third, stretching won't affect muscle compliance during eccentric activity, when most strains are believed to occur. Fourth, stretching can produce damage at the cytoskeleton level. Fifth, stretching appears to mask muscle pain in humans. CONCLUSION: The basic science literature supports the epidemiologic evidence that stretching before exercise does not reduce the risk of injury.
We can go on...

oh my bad.
Stretching has evidently never prevented an injury. It's just an old wives tale. loool

Bicycle, roller blade, whatever floats your boat. A random walk here and there is kinda dumb though. If you want to increase your stamina, you have to challenge yourself, and if you're just walking, it's gonna take a long, long time before you start feeling anything.
|
just force yourself to run....... a lot
|
If you're gonna walk take a backpack filled with really heavy stuff.
But seeing as you're overweight I'd just start running a lot and do lots of pushups.

BTW the cops are gonna tear you a knew one if you're the group fatty. All my of popo friends told me how they just go after the fat dudes, the ugly ones, etc...they're gonna pick on you for everything.

You don't stretch properly (that is, more than ~3 seconds for one muscle) before doing sports at least. Stretching relaxes the muscle and you don't want that before a game.
So yeah, his question isn't all that stupid. I also thought you were a better troll than one having to resort to trolling rpf, come on dude, that's low.

I don't really stretch when I do work outs(with weights). But, when I'm going to run or do anything that involves cardio I'll stretch.

I'm pretty sure he didn't. Read it again. I'm pretty sure he said "he knows" he has to stretch before exercising.
And, stretching after exercise isn't, to my mind, common knowledge, which is what he was asking about.
Stop looking for opportunities to troll.
