There's a thread on reddit front page where people are sneering at a woman who posted a picture of her puppy and herself behind it in a tight shirt without a bra. People are righteously indignant that she is supposedly fishing for upvotes by having her nipples outlined under her t-shirt. I don't really care to speculate on her honesty or integrity, but I just find it really strange that there is such a large consensus that a mere nipple outline is sexual and inappropriate.
I live in Hawaii, and as far as I know it was common for women not to cover their breasts here before missionaries gained influence. That seems to be the case for many cultures in the tropics, and that seems a perfectly natural and practical thing. There are a lot of people in the reddit thread likening the woman's nipple outline to them posting a picture of their penis bulging beneath their underwear. This is equating the nipples of one sex to genitals, which seems completely absurd to me. Genitals are obviously tied to sex, and as far as I know almost all cultures tend to cover them up.
What really bothers me though is that this worm of an idea, that women's nipples are sexual and must be covered, has been planted deeply into my own mind as well. How weird that some person's capricious, insane fancy, from hundreds or thousands of years ago, should travel all this way to take such firm root in the minds of so many. And it makes me wonder, how many other collective insanities have us in their grip right now, powerless to rid ourselves of them should we even recognize them at all?

Same as women should not have hair under the armpit. But some in France (and Spain) still do. It is just a convention of our society, many of which exist for no logical reasons at all.
Another I can think of is people who advocate for animal's rights but still consume meat (and fish). Or a sub-group that elevates the rights of some animals above others.

What's the reasoning behind men having to cover up their penis? none, it's just a convention, just like women covering up their breasts

You want to cover your penis because its dangerous to have that thing flappin' all around like that. Imagine if your nuts got caught on a thorny bush?
The horror

Yeah it is all so arbitrary, yet these things hold so much power over us. We are like Pavlov's dogs x1000.

I don't know about logical reason, but it seems much more widespread and intrinsic to have shame about the genitals than to transfer that to women's breasts.

Well it really depends on how twisted your mind is, then your logic can get weird as well. So pubic hair, armpits/genitals are an expression of one of the two sexual hormones, testosterone in that case. Now men have testosterone and estrogen, And woman have testosterone and estrogen. If you were to give a woman antiandorgens/testosterone blockers she wouldn't develop pubic hair. If that was the line of reasoning, then men should grow full bears, hairy chests, no man boobs, lots of muscle, get tan etc... Then there is the line of reasoning that comes of youth. The younger the less hair, the younger the more fertile, the younger the more desirable etc... Or the logic people like me go with, aesthetics stemming from the idea that curled hair isn't clean as there is an association well, with sweat from the armpits, genitals, butt. People following that line of reasoning actually will wax almost all body hair, weather they are male or female.

I think one can argue quite reasonably that women breasts and nipples are biologically sexual, not just culturally. You can read the arguments here: https://www.quora.com/Why-are-breasts-attractive-28/answer/Molly-Carter-2
There is a practical reason to cover up sensitive body parts in order to protect them. And there is also a logical sociocultural reason to cover sex organs in larger societies, where there are strangers that you don't know at all. You want to limit the exposure to limit the sex drive of unwanted people. This mattered less in smaller communities where everyone knew everyone and there were consequences if you raped someone.

The arguments are plausible and interesting, but I wonder what is the reason for these numbers in one of the links she provides: In a 1951 study of 191 cultures, anthropologist Clellan Ford and ethologist Frank Beach reported that breasts were considered sexually important to men in 13 of those cultures."
And I thought this was funny: "In a chapter in the book "Breastfeeding: Biocultural Perspectives" (Aldine de Gruyter, 1995), cultural anthropologist Katherine Dettwyler describes telling friends in Mali about sexual foreplay involving breasts and getting responses ranging from "bemused to horrified."

Yeah covering for protection makes sense, but I'm interested more in the shame element. That's an interesting point about trying to lessen sex drives, although in the case of breasts it begs the question that humans are naturally aroused by them.

Pubes are so sexy though, this shaving stuff is another convention that needs to go. If we need faux reason - pheromone catcher!

We should work towards sexualizing knees and elbows and ankles, Im curious to see how that plays out, like to people eventually get turned on from seeing exposes knees or elbows or ankles?

The movement has to start somewhere. Although I guess in countries where women have to cover up from head to toe that might already be the case?

This was a thing, not even very long ago, in English culture. If you read books from the Victorian era, there are lots of descriptions of a man being wowed by a "well-turned ankle" in the same way that a glance down a lady's shirt might be described today.

tbh i find my wife's ankles attractive
