Hey, you may or may not recognize me, I used to be a fixture here here during HOTS. Then LOTV came out and my interest ironically cratered.

2 years later, I'm trying to get back into Korean SC2, watching everything chronologically, and this is obviously gonna take a while to catch up on. And I could use some help to make sure I don't ruin everything with spoilers.

If you can answer some/all of these questions, I'd super appreciate it.

1. what Korean tournaments do I need to watch, in what order? (e.g. gsl 2016 s1 > ssl 2016 s1 > etc etc)

2. what big Korean team pickups/drops/disbandments happened approximately when? Big player retirements? If you can be bothered to, spoiler this stuff by season or year so I can check it as I work my way down the tourney list.

3. what are the big LOTV metas/balance/patches?

And anything else very glaring that I would need to know but didn't think to ask.

I remember you.

For the first question, I'd go something like:

+ Show Spoiler [2015 tournaments] +

1) Sandisk Shoutcraft Invitational
2) GSL Pre-Season

+ Show Spoiler [2016 tournaments] +

1) SSL Season 1
2) GSL Season 1 Code A/S
3) Proleague Round 1
4) Season 1 Cross Finals
4) Proleague Round 2
5) Season 2 Code A
6) SSL Season 2 Challenge
7) Season 2 Code S
8) SSL Season 2 Premier
9) Proleague Round 3
10) Cross Finals Season 2
11) Proleague playoffs
12) KeSPA Cup
13) Blizzcon
14) HSC 14 (not technically a Korean event but very stacked edition)
15) IEM Ggyeongi

+ Show Spoiler [2017 tournaments] +

(Code A got scrapped in 2017)
1) Code S Season 1
2) IEM Katowice (not pure Korean event but one of the biggest and best you could find)
3) GSL Super Tournament 1
4) SSL Season 1 (Premier & Challenge)
5) Code S Season 2
6) IEM Shanghai
7) GSL vs The World
8) SSL Season 2 (Premier and Challenge; currently ongoing)
9) GSL Season 3 (currently ongoing)
10) Super Tournament 2 (ETA next month)
11) eventually Blizzcon

Many of those aren't in perfect chronological order because stuff ran at the same time and I didn't wanna make a list accurate down to every match. But I tried

Second question (they're chronologically ordered):

+ Show Spoiler [2015 disbandments/retirements/etc.] +

1) ByuN returns to online competition
2) Prime disbands following match-fixing scandal #1 (getting YoDa, Gerard and B4 banned for life)
3) Flash retires, returns to BW
4) MMA retires, joins army
5) Rain retires, returns to BW after casting SSL for a while
6) Fantasy retires, joins army
7) Shine retires, returns to BW as player, also observer for GSL

+ Show Spoiler [2016 disbandments etc.] +

1) SBENU is taken over by Afreeca after the CEO was found to be a fraud, rebranded to Afreeca Freecs
2) Patience joins the Freecs
3) Life and Bbyong banned from progaming for match-fixing scandal #2
4) HyuN joins JAGW, MC unretires and joins CJ Entus; both permanently retire at the end of the year
5) Sacsri retires
6) MKP retires again
7) TaeJa retires (for real this time)
8) San retires
9) ByuN joins Team expert, basically the rebirth of Team acer
10) DRG, Polt, Hydra, JD and Bomber retire (JD returns to BW, everyone else goes to military)
11) Proleague is discontinued and all KeSPA teams except Jin Air Green Wings disband; DeParture, Blaze, Sorry, Zoun and Symbol retire
12) Splyce builds a team in SC2, picking up Solar and Stats as their first 2 players
13) Patience rejoins dead Pixels, who also pick up Impact after he decided not to retire after all

+ Show Spoiler [2017 stuff] +

1) Stardust retires
2) (former CJ) herO joins ROOT
3) GuMiho joins PSISTORM (teammates with TRUE)
4) jjakji joins Revolution, teammates with Pet and Seed (who retired last month)
5) aLive (in the best shape of his career) joins mYinsanity
6) ByuL is personally sponsored by BasetradeTV
7) TY joins Splyce as their 3rd player
8) viOlet, Dream and Armani retire
9) Squirtle and Maka are playing SC2 again

+ Show Spoiler +
Many high level players are teamless as of now.

I'd say the biggest patches that caused significant meta changes are:

1) LotV release (duh), late 2015
2) First adept nerf, late January 2016
3) Queen buff, mid 2016
4) (Wiki)Patch 3.8.0, a massive patch that changed up everything, late 2016 (after Blizzcon)
5) Further adept nerf & Charge buff, mid 2017

And presumably, we are in for another massive patch that will change everything again, many of the changes are meant to be unveiled today at 10 AM PDT.

I guess I'll also give an overview over some important players left in the Korean scene for when you catch back up. Not spoiling any results.

+ Show Spoiler +

In no particular order
1) Stats, many very strong tournament finishes to his name, spent some time this year carrying the Protoss race by himself, extreme consistency
2) INnoVation, considered by many to be the best player at this time once more, however his 2016 was very bad because by his own admission, he played more LoL than StarCraft 2
3) ByuN, returned from the depths of KeSPA jail to become one of the most iconic figures in our scene, has a sweet puppy
4) Dark, undeniably the most important Zerg for the first year of LotV, shaping the Zerg meta in Korea
5) soO, his 2015 and 2016 weren't that good (sweet article), but he's a big deal once more in 2017
6) TY, very consistent as a top Terran throughout LotV, the expansion has been the most successful time of his entire career as a progamer
7) Zest, an invincible juggernaut for a long time in 2016, he recently hit a deep slump, he's recovering well but it may just be too late to make an impact for 2017
8) Rogue, just recently hit the peak of his career, his 2016 was nothing special but he's a serious threat from now on
9) Solar, while Dark was #1 in 2016 for the Zerg race, Solar was #2, he is wildly inconsistent at times but can always be a threat
10) Classic, he's had some troubles with his consistency but he's always a force to be reckoned with
11) Dear, he was a great player in 2016, and while he dropped off for a while this year, he's currently looking back in strong form
12) GuMiho, hit the best form of his career in 2017
13) herO, always a threat, one of the more consistent players of LotV but without finding many outstanding moments of success
14) aLive, practically found a complete renaissance in LotV
15) Maru, I suppose he warrants a mention, even though his individual league accomplishments are somewhat meager in LotV, he was the standout player in the last season of Proleague

Don't hesitate to ask if you didn't see the name of any of your favorites and wanna know more.

Yessss!! Elentos!!! This is exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much! You even included unofficially Korean Korean tourneys like a stacked HSC and IEM, you da fucking man.

I'll definitely take up your offer to msg you with some questions if they come up.

Looking over the balance changes that just came out, I'm kind of blown away that Parasitic Bomb is *just now* finally not going to stack. I was sure that was gonna be changed any day right before I quit. Looks like I'm in for a crazy wild ride. Edit: I see Ultras also lost some of their armor...eventually. lmao

Nice to see you guys again!
