After LotV, I decided to finish up a protoss chess concept I had been wanting to make. Thought I'd share some of my progress here. I'm sure most of you will recognize the units/characters in the pieces.

I actually have the resources to physically create high quality pieces. But it would be quite a bit of work. So I thought I'd try out Shapeways 3d printing services for the first time and see what I could get there. It's hard to see the translucent material. But it came out the best in terms of quality. I'll have to paint it to really see the details.
Their "orange" material came out looking pretty red and a lot of detail was lost.

Looks good! Going to try painting to match the concept?

They look really awesome in the picture on the chessboard. How long did it take once they were printed and delivered to get them looking like that?
I feel like it would be a little difficult to keep visual track of all the pieces since they don't look that different, but I think that's true with any new chess set and you adjust to it pretty quickly.
edit: jeez I can't tell if that last photo is real or not

plain background (uniform, no shadows) = drawing :D

How tall is the king meant to be?

I think I'll try and get it close I think. Gonna experiment on that translucent plastic piece. Originally I had planned to make nicer pieces in metal, gold plated and with blue enamel. And be able to mold the pieces so that instead of printing 8 pawns individually, I could just make 1 and then make molds of it. But the initial cost to start is a bit much for me atm.

Unfortunately, that's a render.

I think on a standard chess board the king stands around 4 - 4.5 inches. The pawns you see printed are sized at about 1.6 inches for a 1.5 inch square on a chess board. So the king would only be around 2.5 inches tall if I made it for 1.5 inch squares.

I might make them available on Shapeways for other people to print if there's any interest. Could blizzard hit me up with a cease and desist? Absolutely. I'm not about to go and mass produce these or anything. If you do a quick search on Shapeways or Etsy, you'll see tons of people selling things that infringe on IP. Like Star Wars. You'd think disney would come down on all those people selling Star Wars stuff, but they're just too small time for disney to care.

The baneling plushies seems like a good prior case to investigate.

Absolutely awesome! Now we need some zerg ones for the black pieces
We need some new names for the rules now: castling -> Spear of Aduning en passent -> shadow walk zugzwang -> call of the prophecy

I would buy them in an instant.

That was my ultimate goal. Though it might take a while. Zerg is gonna tough because of all the little limbs they got. I have no clue how I'd go about making some of the units without having little pieces hanging off that'd probably break easily. Like a zergling, all those little arms and wings.
Any suggestions on what units to use for pieces for terran/zerg? For terran I'll probably be avoiding any mech units. I've worked on a Hydralisk on and off for about a week in my spare time that would be a Knight piece. Turned out pretty good.
Here's a quick render.
