Does it matter who tortures you? What if your mother tortures you? Of course you forgive your mother. But does your mother forgive herself?
Only by torturing oneself is it possible to free oneself from torture. From the teachings of ninazerg, Jesus Christ, and Christopher Michael Langan, we can safely infer that the universe does not exist and has never existed. The material universe is nothing but a persistent illusion wrought from the drug-addled minds of sadistic drug abusers throughout history.
Whether it be Adam and Eve in the mythical Garden of Eden, the Snake and God's monopolistic interests in the Tree of Knowledge; Jesus Christ's alleged virgin birth and masochistic self-torture to ensure humanity's eternal suffering; or the steps taken by the Prophet of Islam in order to avenge Ishmael's defamation at the hands of Abram; the pattern is clear: the megaverse is not real, and is merely a cognitive-construct.
We suffer because we are ignorant. We suffer because we are mired in the shit of humanity's collective subconscious. Is suffering all in the mind? Undoubtedly unless there is something other than the mind capable of suffering. But in the event of physical death, there is the cessation of suffering. And yet the suffering of the mind does not cease. What recompense is possible to us futile masochists who own the suffering of the materially deceased?
Should we accept the doctrine of higher-order pleasure as a consequence of higher-order pain? According to Nietzsche, the judicious enforcement of suffering is a heightened seduction to life. Yet how can we derive adequate satisfaction in this life from the suffering of our enemies? In the scientific absence of hell and heaven, which can only be precisely understood as yet-unrealized cognitive-constructs, we are forced to appeal to ill-defined karma and the fossil record as our best hope for compensation.

The OP seems to assume life is suffering. I haven't found that to be the case, and to be honest it's for that reason I'm so disconcerted with the idea of death. To give up the awesomeness of life for eternal oblivion has never sounded especially appealing.

There are a lot of holes in economic theory. One of the most glaring holes is that of disutility.
The usual explanation for holes in economic theory is that most students of economics are rich, and the professors richer still. This is true of academic development throughout history. Some professors are in a position to say, "I wish my students could appreciate this." To put a twist on things, I would say the masochism of the professor is the sadism of the student. It's as insulting to say you are smart as to say you are not smart.
Suppose you could open a time capsule with a blueprint from 5,000 years in the future. Has thought been invented yet? You could will not to open the time capsule. But what if you were faced with an ultimatum: Will yourself to open the time capsule or have it written by another entity who in fact opens the time capsule: 5,000 years in the future you would have willed yourself to open the time capsule. The other entity's argument is that the consequences of you not opening the time capsule were so severe as to compel you to open the time capsule.
The other entity who has opened the time capsule himself or herself (Why not itself?) is in what appears to be an invulnerable position. What primitive proposition could withstand the force of thought? (Thought itself of course!) The answer is clearly love. (But can love survive disutility? And for how long?) Eventually you will trade all your happiness for a drop of suffering. (Not because it is fair. Because it is just.) There is not much wisdom in thought (and yet there is wisdom).
