Hi TL
Long time no post here but I thought I might as well ask for some advice here because who would know more about Korea (and maybe Japan) than TL. I am leaving right now and will be in Tokyo for 7 nights then Korea for 5 nights. I have been working basically everyday for the past month and have been too stressed/busy to plan much so I'm just figuring out what I should do now!!! I have booked all my accommodation luckily but otherwise I am going in blind.
Anyways it occurred to me there are probably still PL matches going on in Korea? Or at least some starcraft games I could watch? I am there from April 7 to April 12. I would love to meet Bisu if he still plays...
More generally is there anything that is must see in Japan or Korea? Or anything cool going on at the moment? My girlfriend got me a travel book for Japan which I will be reading through on my flight but I guess that only covers the popular/tourist things. If anyone wants to catch up for a beer sometime in Tokyo/Seoul at a nice bar that would be cool!!! Thanks I appreciate any replies

Tokyo, I recommend Nightlife / Drinking/Clubbing : Shibuya, Shinjuku.
Go to Odaiba, check out the mega gundam, lots of attractions
Check out Akihabara for animes and all the accessories, maid cafe, etc.
Ueno, there is an amazingly cheap sushi bar (kaiten sushi) below the bridge near the station.
If you have time, take a 30 min train ride to Yokohama, and check out Sakuragicho. Lots of shopping areas and sightseeing there too.
If I were you, I would check out Osaka, that's truly an awesome place.

The following is all for stuff in Tokyo:
Ueno park for cherry blossom viewing. There's lots of other places to view too, but Ueno park is apparently the best (in Tokyo anyways). You're actually in the prime time
Shibuya for shopping. Akihabara for anime shopping.
There's a Pokemon Centre in Ikebukuro if you want to buy Pokemon themed goods.
Tsukiji market for some expensive sushi. You have to wake up early (~5-6am) as by 9am, the lines can reach 2-3 hrs long. After 9am, there's a section of the market that will be open to tourists and you can just see all the seafood for sale and just how it's sold. Do be careful as there's lots of heavy traffic and the market isn't actually designed for tourists (it's a business after all), so don't get run over by the cars/forklifts.
If you're into beer, you can visit the Kirin brewery in Yokohama for a free tour (they have English handouts available + free beer to drink at the end).

As for administrative stuff. When you arrive, You can buy a round trip Narita Express ticket that should only cost ~4000yen for foreigners (show your passport) that will take you from airport to Tokyo and back within a max 14 day period. There's station officers there that will help foreigners with purchasing. Japan requires you to keep your passport on you at all times when you're travelling.
Make use of their superior train/subway system, as all the places you want to go will be next to or within walking distance from a train station. At any one of the JR stations, you should buy yourself an IC card (I personally recommend the Suica card, pretty much compatible with a lot of the other IC card systems too). It makes travelling on the train easier since you don't have to figure out how much you need for a ticket. Just buy the card (2000yen) and it'll come loaded with that amount of money. When you're low on money, just go to one of the machines (English option is on the top right) to refill your card with more money. It's not hard to figure out how to use, just see how everyone else scans their wallet/card at the ticket gates before and after they enter.
If you have an unlocked smartphone, you can buy a prepaid phone card that comes with data either at the airport, or your hotel if they have it. It only comes with data, no voice (due to criminal abuse, you can get around it but don't think it's really necessary). It's around 3000yen for 1GB or 4000yen for 2GB for 30 days. Just follow the instructions on the prepaid card to use, and maybe Google some help with your hotel's wifi.
