The Plateau

As a StarCraft player, I am bound to run into various plateaus while improving my skills at the game. Whether it is learning to drop mules faster or maybe my splitting technique. When I first started to get coaching from (my now good friend) Marius, I exploded. Not litterally, but I started to get very good very fast. I started at about silver and got to diamond in 2.5 months. I was soooo hyped and ready to get masters. I wanted to be the very best, like no one (except every other masters) ever was! This is where I actually start my story of this post.

I hit THE plateau. Now I know that it is probably not the biggest one that I will hit in my StarCraft career, but it has hit me like a brick wall. My main problem is multi-tasking. The fact of keeping constant production out of barracks, factory, starport, and command center while microing their units and dropping at the same time just seems so simple until I get into game. I think I am playing great only to see that I have 5 scvs on my 3rd instead of 16. I take a look at the replay and see that I didn't build scvs for like a minute straight.

This is where I ask the people of TL how you guys dealt with this and how you kept your mindset up. I tend to get tilted after games (even if I win) when I see that I played so shit. I put so much effort into learning how to do these things, but I cannot execute them.

Okay, I'm done bitching now. Thanks for reading.

One of the simplest ways to solve this kind of problem is to find a friend to practice against at a lower game speed setting. The issue isn't so much knowing how to organize doing those individual things but how to organize doing them together and that's not at all the same thing. It may be easy to feel that afterwards you aren't fast enough but usually one's speed while playing Starcraft is about knowing what to do and when, physical limitations don't come in as a limiting factor until you get to about 300-400 APM (see how quickly you can hit a sequence of keyboard keys you can hit consecutively repetitively, you'll see your physical limitation is far above how quickly you tend to play). Playing at a lower game speed gives you more time in the moment to figure out how to execute and prioritize the actions you'll make optimally.

Thanks for the info, I will try this with a friend. Starcraft is such a hard game that it makes it an art. A very very hard art :p

I made the leap from diamond to masters with a change of mindset. First it was about learning the game, doing things as efficiently as possible. But once I knew how to do that, I wasn't thrilled doing it. It is monotonous, hence boring and I really didn't care enough...I played for fun.
I found a different kind of fun now, fun comes from winning now, a sort of universal fun, not tied to starcraft. In Order to win in Starcraft I adopted a competetiv mindset. Every action, Workerpairing, building stuff, moving stuff, looking at stuff has a motivation behind it. No longer because I wanna try it to see and learn, no, I know it works, but I do it to be better, better than my opponent. It is like a whole new level of communication with my opponents aswell, when I see all the small stuff they do with so much effort, just to get an inch, it is a satisfiying form of respect between two competitors. Play to dominate, play to win.
