If you want to, share here your experiences about this. Here is mine.

It was about 4 months ago, and now I just finished my final high school exams, so I'm not ashamed about it anymore and I can't but laugh thinking about it because it was quite weird.

Basically this was a gym written test. Yes, it's not just a legend, they do exist. In my school there isn't any kind of obligation to do that and in fact we did only 2 written tests (including this one) during the 5 years. So it was kind of a joke for me.
Like: "I could easily ace this test if I want to, but I don't give a shit because it's a dumb subject."

So during the morning of the test I copied 2 whole pages from my gym book into a half fold paper, and written really really small. It was hilarious to see how much stuff I wrote in there. My aim was to fake it as a draft and then don't hand it over (teachers usually don't want drafts because it messes up with the correction).
But yeah that was quite dumb, it had always worked for me but you should never do this with a new teacher.

In fact this teacher was always detached and cold. But the funniest moment was at the beginning of the test when she suddenly changed temper for a moment and almost begged us not to copy, because it would be very embarassing for her if she caught someone cheating. Then she covered her eyes with her hands and asked us to put away all our hidden notes, while we (and I) were laughing.

Now you would think: "if you aren't mentally retarded, now you put away your half fold paper with 2 pages of information written inside really small". But maybe my reaction was that of a wild animal when it smells fear, and it is more prompted to attack. So I copied anyway.

At the end of the test surprisingly she came by my desk and asked to hand over the papers. I don't know if she saw me during the test or it was just luck, because I was really really careful. I tried to put my "draft" in the schoolbag but obviously she saw me and asked to hand that too. That was a really embarassing moment because all the class was looking at me and I even saw a girl covering her mouth with a hand (not to laugh). lol.

What happened after? I never excused with her. That was mainly because she was a new teacher and she had the temper I described, but also because I, funnily enough, felt offended that she would be "such a bitch" during a stupid gym test which wasn't worth anything and which nobody in my class had studied for.

On the other hand she didn't tell anything to the other teachers. Nobody ever knew about that except my classmates and the janitors (they always know everything naturally). Not even my parents. I felt a little bit surprised from this. Most likely she didn't want "troubles" of any kind, but there are other teachers like this and they don't try hard to find people who copy in the first place.

However I sort of learnt the lesson. I never copied anymore and I think I won't even need to at university. My final grade in gym was a 6/10 (equivalent of D in US) while every other subject was 8/10 (equivalent of B) or above, but I sucked in practical tests too so nobody was really concerned with that.

As I was read this, I was thinking, man, why is this guy cheating. Then I got to the end and realized you were blatantly caught cheating and there was no formal action. Combine that with the part where the teacher provided amnesty for those who had cheat sheets (when she covered her eyes) and it becomes clear to me that you have a systemic cheating problem where you live. I'm honestly surprised you learned enough from this event to change your habits, but hopefully you did.

I don't know. Gym teachers almost never do written tests so they usually never have to cope with cheating. But in almost every written test there is someone who cheats and 99% of the times they don't get caught. It is mostly done out of laziness though.

Written gym tests in italian high schools are a joke anyway.

We had an english teacher, and every mistake I make during this response will be his fault, that usually started a test by saying "I won't notice if you cheat anyways", then he opened his big newspaper and did not pay any attention to us anymore.

Another stutend who had him in geography reported an interresting situation. He was about to fail the class and the final exam had come, he blacked out and didn't write a single word on his paper. Let's call the teacher mister Fellenberg, because that was his name, he saw the blank paper about 30 minutes into the test. He then announced to the class loudly " I AM GOING TO COPY SOMETHING, i'll be back in 10 minutes", and then left the room. After 10 minutes he knocked on the door to his own classroom "I am done copying, and shall come in now".
Such a cool guy.
Also, I never cheated, as Al Bundy said:" It's only cheating if you get caught".

I agree. The OP sounded like a smug jerk for boasting about cheating and his general approach to this subject (e.g., "So it was kind of a joke for me. Like: "I could easily ace this test if I want to, but I don't give a shit because it's a dumb subject." "), but if the teachers are actually going to let students get away with that crap, I'm not surprised he did it in the first place.

The teacher shouldn't have been embarrassed to catch a cheater. She should have understood that cheating compromises the integrity and hard work that the rest of the class puts in, and that the cheater is at fault. She absolutely should have turned him in. I can only hope that cheaters actually have to deal with harsh consequences when they get caught, to deter them from cheating in the future.

When I was in high school one of my math teachers would usually go home after giving out tests, and asked the head of class to deliver the test papers to his home at the end of the day. The amazing thing is that we still got different scores most of the times, I guess some people just can't be bothered. On one occasion when that teacher returned the graded tests, he even helped anyone who didn't get a perfect score correct their answers on the spot and changed the grade accordingly. Amusingly one guy missed his turn to get the perfect score because he just went away to buy a sandwich (in case you wonder, it was during class).

There was also another teacher in the same school who gave us one perfect test score every semester just so he has one fewer test to set and mark.

Overall that was the story of me being a jerk, that's why I thought it was interesting.

Only time I cheated in school was on this dopey homework assignment - a crossword puzzle of words from the novel we were reading. It was assigned over spring break which my family spent in this nice resort so ofc I didn't wanna do it - I did like half of it before blowing the rest off. When I turned it in I forgot to write my name on it so I asked to go through the pile to find my copy and put my name on; well of course everyone else in the class had completed the whole thing, and I couldn't help but notice some of the answers that I just couldn't find, so I started writing a few down on mine before the teacher caught me. She had this really stern attitude so I completely freaked out and when she saw me after class I just started blubbering and apologizing almost before she could talk. I think she was just confused (I was a pretty good, quiet student) so she let me off, and I felt guilty about the whole thing for months.

I supposed I did also have an economics teacher that would routinely give partner tests (take the test with a partner), and didn't seem to notice/care if you also happened to get help from other pairs.... Not to mention if you thought a question was too hard you could just go right up to his desk during the exam and give some bullshit explanation about how the question was unfair and could be interpreted multiple ways, and he would just give you credit... This guy had made a fortune working on Wall Street before coming to teach high school economics, and he retired after 3 or 4 years of that too (in his 30s...), so I guess he had the last laugh.

idk, I 'cheat' in math and put formulas in graphing calculator, but that's about it...and honestly it barely seemed/seems like cheating because my calculus teacher was the one who taught us how to network it to a keyboard to easily type stuff in for our AP tests :p

That's a difference then. In my school nobody even had graphing calculators at home. Maybe in the US they are more common but I actually can't even remember to have seen one.

I definitely used them in high school, and in the higher level math classes they did bother to erase their memory for finals. Only annoying thing about that was it wiped the games I had put on it.

In my country the standard procedure is to clear the GC's memory and leave it at the corner of your desk showing the memory cleared screen for teachers to check before the start of the test.

Of course, some geniuses came up with the idea of writing a programme that fakes the memory cleared screen. But then again it's really not that hard to get A so why bother cheating?

Cheating is a give and take. Cheat if you're willing to risk the grave consequences for getting hammered. Unless you're planning to work at a convent, you're going to be faced with these kinds of dilemmas all the time once you're out of school. Not cheating but society deemed amoral behavior.

Surprised you didn't get reamed. That would've been a nice life lesson.

You're fucked if you get caught at university. You're also fucked if you get caught outside of school. But sometimes it's necessary if the stakes are high enough. I used to have a moral stance about cheating (lol), then I actually started to face real life choices. And you'll find that instead of black and white, everything turns into a shade of grey.
