It has been 7-8 years since i started to lurk this website, and i still come every day. Used to come for the small community and the internal jokes, now i come for the game results. I really miss the the old ways, so i decided to do a small project.
I would play on Battle.net and ask every player I play against where he is from, and after that I would place their location on a custom google map. The decision was to play on NA server as that is the "central" server where people gather from all over the world. I played random and told my race so i would gain my opponents trust, so they would feel comforable giving out personal information.
To get 100 people to tell me their city it took about 150 games, as people would leave as the very first moment they saw they were about to play against a random opponent or they would just not want to disclose where they are from. Some people were assholes about it, but on a larger sample of users, that is expected. Each icon represents a single user with his race, nickname and location. (default for Zerg, blue for Terran, green for Protoss and purple for one guy named Rico).
It feels unreal to play on a ISDN connection (thats 64k, a little better than standard modem 56k) on battle.net with zero lag or latency. So i guess Blizzard did that part right.
Random facts:
- Most friendly people are from France and South America - Most players are from NYC area, Montreal and Taiwan - Got placed in Silver league at the end of previous season, got up to Diamond in this one - I lost to a user named Vivianne twice, and then defeated him 3x in a row, that was the most satisfing as playing goes - Terran felt like the hardest race, and TvT as the hardest matchup - People will complain about your race, even if you play random
I hope Blizzard does more regional settings in the last StarCraft 2 part, connecting to people is very fun. I miss the lobby Broodwar chat.
EDIT: no idea why the images do not load EDIT.2: i found it, had to put extension names on the pictures

I felt like WC 3 had a really awesome community. Clans on US East had rivarlries. I remember anytime my clan would play some arrange 4v4 together and we matched another clan, both sides would go try hard mode. It was awesome.
Also P.S cool read, would be interesting to see a larger sample size on different severs.

yes, that s why when I play random I never talk outside of GL HF, I dont want my opponent to think I m just being BM/preparing a cheese.
I do talk after games though if I am talked to (politely I mean, I just ignore basic insults, after all the Brood War FRA-1 channel was an insult fest ^^)

Because it's a universal truth, from BW to SC2, from Peru to Korea.
