I'm not one for niceties. I don't enjoy small-talk. Don't be fooled though, I'm very good at it. Bring me to a social gathering and watch me float like a butterfly and charm people left and right, but when it comes to the everyday day-to-day events, I find that these superficial interactions are really energy draining.
I live in LA. That says something. I live in a city where money speaks louder than words. How does one show that they have money? They wear it, or speak it. Everyone wants to be rich and famous in this damn city. If you're rich, you're set. If you're not rich, you fake being rich.
I live on the outskirts. The hustle and bustle of central LA isn't present in my town. The people here are older professionals, settling down in my area to raise their children in their large estates. My town has a large mall in every district, with market chains and franchises lining the streets.
What does that matter for this story?
There are a lot of fake people in this city. Yes, there are fake people everywhere, but in this town particularly is a huge lot of dumb pigs with faces full of lipstick and glamour.
There used to be a better, younger me. He was naive, and spoke with everyone with his heart. Some people accepted him, others rejected him. Those people were fine. Younger-me learned to live with joy and heartbreak.
But there are those who deceive, who look at you and say one thing and think another. The two-faced brigades who simply want to use you for their own purposes. I've fallen into their traps once, and after that I have become a more guarded self.
It's hard finding good people. When you make a good friend, make one for life. My mother always told me to hang on to the people who you feel are family to you. She's right. Each close friend is a sparking diamond in a sea of mud.
I'm in a position where such people are hard to find. And they people I had found over the years have slipped away, like small stones through the holes of my pockets.
Nevertheless I am optimistic. There are millions and billions of people on this Earth. Right now, I am surrounded by thousands of people within a 5 mile radius. I look forward to each day, ready to welcome someone. I will show them who I am, and be ready for acceptance or rejection.
I hope you find such a gem. I hope that when you walk outside into that indifferent world you meet someone who's willing to share your burdens and struggles. I hope you both share your passions and dreams. I hope you show your friend as much compassion as he or she does to you.
I'll see you around, friend.

Kinda reminds of the Tool song "Aenema". Why don't we just flush Californa away, and we'd be rid of alot of materialistic, fake snobs + Show Spoiler +

Amazing post. I just realized if I could have one superpower, it would be the ability to know when someone is honest. I don't know if that's an actual superpower, but it would make me happier than bring able to fly... Nevertheless, you are correct. All we can do is grind through each day holding on to those who treat us best; and if we're lucky tomorrow we'll find someone new to share our lives with.

There's a professor at Berkeley who studies facial expressions. Lie to Me was based on him.
As for the blog, I'm reminded of the song "Mad World" or objectivist works.

Everyone lies. We're genetically programmed to lie to our advantage. You can fake a smile on demand in front of a photographer. To expect anything more from people, even your friends, is optimistic.
