Many years ago,
our family was charged with keeping the safety of the shore.
The men would go out in ships to ward away pirates,
the women guard the lighthouse to illuminate their return.
It was once foretold that if the light should fade
our men would perish
our family would falter
our name would fade from the kingdom.
We swore never to let our menfolk down,
though it should cost us all that we held dear.
Once when they left for far longer than normal,
our stores of fuel ran low.
Into the furnace all ashable material went,
precious though they might be.
Our silks and jewels,
our scrolls and our tables.
Even as the tower was stripped bare,
our flame still clung to life.
And as it was weakening,
we saw the sails of our ship returning.
The men strode up the shore,
long had their parting been.
As we looked into those faces we adored,
so they smiled back serene.
"We got you girls those fur coats you wanted"
"forgive our long delay"
Since then our house has been bankrupt
all because of the prophecy made that day.
