ZvP - Countering air units?

Hi guys.

Just played a ZvP match where my opponent warped around 10 ground units in and then stuck to sheer air support for the rest of the match.

I thought building excessive mutas would wipe them out and then gg (my first ever human win...) but they were just getting destroyed.

I've link the replay at the bottom for anyone interested.

How am I countering protoss air units? I tried hydras and mutas but he was relentless and I ended up surrendering.

Thanks in advance

I believe this should be under the SC2 Strategy section with an [H] label(as in help.)

On topic, it depends on what air units the protoss is building. Void rays, tempest, phoenix or carriers? Maybe a mix?
You must take your opponent into a deep dark forest where 2+2=5, and the path leading out is only wide enough for one. - Mikhail Tal

Apologies, completely new around here so I'm not really sure about the sections etc.

Just watched over the replay and it was mainly Void Rays. He'd built a few ground units (10~ Zealots and 3 Colluss') but never moved them out, simply macro'd with an army of void rays waiting an an attack, wiped out my units and then carried on macroing.

Corruptors are the best thing to use imo against any kind of protoss air. Roach Hydra Corruptor is a pretty good and easy to handle composition you should use and go a little more heavy on the hydras than the roaches. I liked your baneling drop but it was unnecessary as were the banelings and the massive number of roaches in your army. GL

Thanks for the tips.

The Baneling drop was something I'd wanted to try for a while, still getting to grips with the game and thought it'd be funny to nuke an entire expansion with a single drop.

I wasn't aware he was going full void ray until the drop so I was building roaches in excess to counter the ground units I thought he was going for!

Not really much point analyzing the replay... you banked 8000/4000 at some point after your baneling drops, which were pretty ineffective. Took a lot to kill just one base.

Poor build order.
Your never even once scout.
Poor drone saturation.
You bank lots of resources all the time.
Unfocused game plan.

Fix your scouting and macro and a greedy mass air strategy will never work already. You just kill them if they don't have the defense. This is more important than anything really.

In general, against Void Ray heavy compositions you'll want Hydralisks and a handful of Roaches, and then bust them right when you hit 200 supply or earlier if you feel like you have the advantage. The Roaches buffer the few ground units they have and Hydralisks maul Void Rays. Add Corruptors if they have Phoenix.

If they're Carrier/Tempest heavy you add Corruptors and manually target each individual Carrier/Tempest. You have to work out exactly how many Corruptors after playing a while and getting a feel for it. You can add in Hydra/Roach as well so you can actually do damage once you've killed their army.

The most important thing is just macro and scouting. Like, we can talk about throwing theoretical blobs of units at each other all day but there's no way they should've been able to get that far in the first place. Try to replay your game with the Take Control feature and make a lot of units and attack him before 14:00, while working on your macro.
There is no one like you in the universe.

Yes Corruptors are generally a bad idea in direct engagements, they just straight up lose.
I played it a bit on the NA ladder and i never really lost with the composition for 2 weeks against mid and high masters.
What i can say is dont try mutas, im pretty sure it sets you behind when the protoss is scouting, even when the mutas are already at your base and you have barely any phoenixes, in low numbers your skytoss army is strong enough and you get a high phoenix count in seconds on 3 stargates and you most likely have a fleetbeacon yet.
Ive experienced that some hydra play early on not as lategame composition but constant pressure can pick a protoss apart if he plays sloppy but i dont think its a direct counter.
About the lategame i could imagine picking him slowly apart with vipers and stuff but you have to get there.
I only played skytoss a little bit but when i do and there are swarmhost i usually still go skytoss and overpower him b4 it gets scary dunno.
At least those are my thoughts about it. Correct me pls if needed.

+2 Corruptors and Hydras with adequate micro and a couple infestors while not engaging like an idiot into charged VR's does work. It works great for me in Dia/Low Masters. I often come out ahead enough to counter-attack and win the game two minutes later. But, maybe you're right, I could be better than my opponents.

I sent the overlord scout at the beginning but to the wrong end of the map, that's the issue. It wasn't that I didn't scout, it's that I scouted the wrong area...

Unfocused game plan.

I was under the impression after around 10 minutes or so everything you did then was reactional?

Sorry, like I said I'm completely new to the game and I'm not used to the demand it gives yet.

Thank you for the feedback though

If the protoss has storm out corruptor hydra will not work or at least it should not.
I dont know when your timing hits but if you dont do something with the hydras early on hydra corruptor will not work.
Protoss will be ahead in air (upgrades) and it gets more of an abusive play by the zerg.
Even without storm if you attack into a pretty good position of the protoss this can be held i THINK.
But im pretty sure i have storm up by then and i only have to land some to stop it.
I still think key is pressure with the hydras and exploiting mistakes by the protoss, wich could very likely be you outplaying your opponent.
