EDIT: I was just informed by the director that the job has been given to someone already, so the rest of this post is no longer relevant. If anyone is interested, there might be another position at the same academy up for grabs in a few months, although I will no longer be there.
+ Show Spoiler +I probably should have made this blog a few weeks ago, but better late than never.
In short, this is a job advertisement. I'm currently coming to the end of my contract at a private English academy in Korea, and looking for someone to replace me. So far we have received a ton of CVs from recruiters, but all of the people we've interviewed so far have either been less than stellar, or they did an interview and then changed their mind for whatever reason.
So I figured there are lots of people on TL either living in Korea or interested in teaching in Korea, hence why not make a post here and see if there's any interest. Also, it's common knowledge that Starcraft players are more intelligent, reliable and skilful than the general population.
I'm not going to post all of the details here, but it's a job teaching afternoon-evening hours at a private English academy just outside of Seoul (about 20 minutes from Gangnam). The students are elementary to middle schoolers, and their level is, on average, pretty high when compared to other Korean students of a similar age. The contract is standard. You would be starting in the second week of June. We are looking for someone who is (preferably) in Korea already and has all the documents ready to go for an E2 visa application.
If anyone is interested, please PM me for more information, or feel free to post questions below.
Cheers.

Why should any prospective teachers want to teach at your school instead of the thousands of other hagwons?
|
Maybe cos mentioned private ?
Maybe mention rough salary level or something so people have an idea of that also.

I think there are several good points about this place. First of all, there is no bullshit with salary, the contract or other hidden work. Second, it's in a good area and the facilities are nice. Third, the director is agreeable and gives respect and autonomy to the teachers. I could go on, but from what I've heard about other hakwons I think this is clearly in the upper echelon of jobs out there in terms of working conditions.
Salary is about 2.1 to 2.2 (pension and medical insurance cost is taken out from this).

Hello mate, as someone who previously worked for EPIK I can see fairly quickly why you are getting a low number of decent applications.
Firstly, that salary is extremely low, particularly if pension and insurance is still to come out of this.
Secondly, you are very vague about where it is. 20 minutes from Gangnam and yet "just outside Seoul"? Could be right on the periphery if things at best.
What is the accommodation like? If its poor standard, you'd be struggling to afford to rent and pay the key money deposit elsewhere (the korean name of which escapes me) in those areas.
If someone was with EPIK, for example, that would be a big drop in wages, forsaking their renewal bonus if they were moving to the private sector (equivalent to one months salary) and the grim fear the many, many 학원 horror stories.
If you are ruling out EPIK candidates, you then risk hiring from a funny sort of pool- some who just like the evening and weekend hours and are in it for good reasons, many of them- however so many of the others have shadier reasons to avoid the public mainstream selection process.
Going to have to give much more information and probably bump up that salary.

Those are all valid points, but it doesn't really concern me because I don't have a stake in the outcome. I don't own the place or decide the salary, I just work here. As I said, I just thought I'd make a post and see if anyone was interested, but if I don't get any responses then that's cool too, we can just go with one of the other people who already applied.
I'm being deliberately vague about the location, if you want to know exactly where it is then you can PM me.
The accommodation is fine, it's a one-room studio in a clean, modern building right next to a subway station (two stops away from the academy itself.)

but this line made my day "Also, it's common knowledge that Starcraft players are more intelligent, reliable and skilful than the general population."

Not sure what Heartscry's on about. 2.1-2.2 + housing is very standard (not extremely low) for hagwons. EPIK or not they still need to apply for an E2 through immigration (need apostilized bachelors + criminal background check) which automatically rules out the shadier candidates. No need to get all hostile. Furong's just trying to help out his boss, which is another indication that it was a decent place to work.
|
You're saying about "automatically filters out the shady candidates" but I know a chap who was blacklisted for being a danger to children in one province with EPIK, and had a new job in a private academy in another province within two months.
Not being hostile at all- the chap said he couldn't understand the poor quality of applicants, as someone who actually did teach in Korea for a number of years, I offered reasons why.
The CRB is circumvented in the private sector all the time.
It isn't a direct criticism of that particular 학원 at all, merely an explanation why many higher quality candidates won't take that gig. For instance, if you are tier 1* with EPIK you are earning nearly 3m 원 a month plus renewal and end of year bonuses.
