replay : http://drop.sc/333384
So a PvZ. I've been trying quite hard to figure out how to actually make a gateway expand work ever since I saw lots of pros using them in the WCS and such, and they've been a really good feeling alternative to the Forge Fast Expand. I feel like much less of a pure-turtle, and my style seems to fit a bit better with the metagame now than it used to (tech straight to voidrays < hydralisks!?). Early game progressed fairly well, although I do wish that I would have pressured a little bit more with the 4 gates I had created. My hallucinated phoenix made his ling count look a lot higher than it actually was. Composition wise, I didn't feel too bad either, although a few more voidrays may have helped.
The first big mistake, in my opinion, was my lack of defense put into securing my 4th base. The opportune moment that I decided to take would have got my 4th up handily, except that his lings came in at just the right moment. Had I kept all my forces at my 4th until it was secured (with the MSC nearby to recall against any surprise attacks) I feel that I would have been a lot better once the late-ish game hit.
For anyone who watched the replay, the fatal mistake is probably quite obvious...
Operation FacePalm, commence!
HOW COULD I BE SO STUPID ARGH! All I can say is that I've faced so many situations where I traded army with zerg then he maxes back on either ultras or broodlords, and so I panicked. Looking back on the game, and realizing how I was actually ahead in supply after the engagement, I definitely should have held back, secured a 4th, and pumped out more voidrays. However, I instead decided to go rolling into a wall of static defense. The game just flew off a cliff at that point, with hydras cleaning up ground forces until the broodlords came.
The most basic things that I should have/could have fixed are; no proxy pylon (even semi-proxy would have helped), terrible positioning while trying to secure 4th base, walking into certain death, and not enough early aggression when i had the window open.
Things that I thought went well...
Mothership Toast!
I felt that my macro until the mid-game didn't go too badly, and the composition of units that I had was quite effective against the first force that my enemy pushed out with. Had I kept up the lead after that I may have been able to come back too. My prediction of what would happen was also quite spot-on, although my reaction to that was unimaginably terrible. More than anything I think that I just don't like that map and will veto it from here on out! xD Thanks for Reading!
