The only thing the OP is talking about is textures, which have very little effect on performance in most cases and really don't represent the state of graphical fidelity. The only thing those screenshots show is that consoles have very little video memory, which everyone already knows and doesn't affect most modern games on PCs anyways. The inclusion of low texture mode for SC2 doesn't preclude Extreme textures mode, and most people will barely even notice a performance difference.

You could also add that Crysis games since no1 are being forced out by companies to make more $$ because "everyone likes Crysis atm" so they leech every cent out of it. You could argue that is the reason not "great" new graphics are being produced. Crysis when it came out was awesome visually like you have shown, 2 years later Crysis 3 is out and it hardly looks any diffo if not worst (in the pics you shown) than its predecessor.

Developers have to work to extremely strict time lines, which modders don't. I'm not making excuses but from a software devs pov that's really a huge factor. If you have 3 managers breathing down your neck cause your project is behind or taking longer than expected it's more important to get the product shipped than for it to be perfect. It's just part of the industry, and yes it sucks.
You realise almost a quarter of software never makes it past development stage and about a third comes in MASSIVELY over budget.
You should read Patrick Wyatts blog if you haven't already, provides an interesting insight for those outside the industry. Getting something working is more important than getting something perfect.

Who cares. The gameplay of every new game just sucks so much balls I've pretty much stopped playing games altogether this last year. I tried playing Mass Effect, Dead Space, Skyrim, Hitman Absolution, Halo reach, CoD whatever, Dishonered, Assasins creed. Probably more. All of them were so extremely boring mainly because they are just so fucking easy. Without blinking I always turn the game onto the hardest difficulty. It takes about 2/3 hours before I've figured everything out and it's all a cakewalk. I haven't finished any of these games by the way. Only Dark Souls and CS:GO could satisfy me, even tough it has become a habit in CS:GO to join the losing team :/. Sad me I guess my gaming days are coming to an end.

Agreed. And it's not just the fact that games are easy difficulty wise, it's the fact that it only takes an hour or two to figure out what the rest of the game is going to be like. I got tired of Skyrim after having done 4-5 dungeons and like 20 quests because I knew exactly what the rest of the game would be like. It's the same old dungeons with the same old rusty buckets and spoons and millions of dead skeletons carrying 2 gold. It's the same old "epic" battles that are, in truth, always battles of attrition where you whack away at your enemy until you run low on health and quaff a potion, then whack some more. It would be a fine game if I hadn't already done the same thing in a million other games. There needs to be more innovation in gaming other than making the games longer or prettier.

Well said. My steam profile tells me I played Skyrim for 10 hours(Blacks Ops for 30 minutes lol). After those 10 hours I had pretty much seen it all. All games are so alike. Take shooters for example, they all have the same dull aiming system and recoil is apparently terrible because sheesh, let's not make a game challenging shall we. And when we do throw in recoil, let's make sure it's completely random and non controllable so nobody benefits from it. While we are at it, throw in a million gimmicks which slow down and/or completely ruin gameplay. I'm looking at you all Halo's past 2. Where are our new Quakes? Our new Counter Strikes? Our new Halo: CE's, the only shooter that ever worked on a console. I mean, Starcraft 2 is decent. But why didn't it take all the good elements from Brood War? And I am most definitely not talking about MBS/Auto Mining, I even thought these were dumb in BW.

The only time I was actually floored with a game's graphics the first time I saw it was Mario on n64.

Wasn't much impressed by pre-rendered stills being flashed across the screen. By then we had enough cd-rom large real-time video or pre-rendered cgi scenes in games that Myst didn't interest me in the slightest as I was never a big fan of puzzle games or King's Quest like adventure (Did play the original Sam & Max though). I am talking straight gameplay graphics going from a 2D world to 3D with mario. Subsequent mario-clones are still being churned out today.

I'm personally excited for the next few years of RPGs. The guys who made all those fantastic RPGs in the late 90s are working on stuff like Wasteland 2 and Project Eternity.
Skyrim is shit and is outdone in scope, immersion, story, and fun by Morrowind

By the way, that Crysis 1 screenshot is taken in a giant resolution and downscaled to normal in order to make it look smooth and get rid of aliasing, you could have run the game in that texture/shader/lighting quality but not with the exact same look, normally you would see a lot more jagged edges.

Definitely. I dropped about 2 grand on a really good PC 4 years ago and honestly there's still not a game I've played (which granted is not every one) that I can't play well on maxed settings. Must have been a pretty sick PC, I bought my desktop a little over 2 years ago and while I can play crysis 3 just fine, I still need to lower the graphics to the bare minimum to get constant 40+ fps. It's the first game I played where I was forced to remove Vsync because it became unplayable with it though.

The reason why I personaly want and have a powerful pc aside from work related projects is I play on a tripple monitor system. Nothing compares. It basicaly uplifts every game. Play Crysis3 on it and it looks stunning. The amount of detail that hits your eyes really sucks you in.
I used to play with a 3D monitor and I wish I was loaded enough to go for 3D Surround. Seriously, I hope things like Oculus Rift will eventually uplift everyone to the same and obviously more amount of immersion you get with Surround or a 3D setup. I wouldn't want to miss that anymore.
And hell why not. I'm a grown man with a good income. If I want to put down a thousand bucks for monitors and an expensive card so what. So yeah, handling 1920x1080? That's feels like a 4:3 resolution for me, go 5760x1080 and beyond and we talk about hardware again.
