So in the past, I spoke about getting a little more into competitive Brood War. I got to watch some ProLeague, MSL, and OSL but the Korean professional Brood War scene was on its way out when I started following. Needless to say, things like Snipealot’s stream and SOSPA have been really nice. But I always wanted to watch a high level foreign based tournament like MLG just to see what that was like. Luckily, the new TeamLiquid Legacy Starleague stepped up to fill this void.
Pro7ect
I remember when I first started following some BW stuff, Pro7ect was one of my favorite streamers and he played in a lot of the Russian/Foreign BW tours. When it was announced he was going to start playing SC2, I was a bit sad. Really really glad he’s back and he’s come on real strong during the Weekend of the non-Zerg qualifiers. And I laughed when he had something like 500 apm. Spam or not I don’t think I could register that much.
I always liked how Pro7ect’s builds always seem well thought out. He’s got a plan and it sticks to it. I know he says in his interview that he freestyles a lot of his builds but it doesn’t seem that way to me. Oh I’m going to mech on this map. Oh this map is good for bio so I’m going to go all out with macro. He seems like a very solid, safe player. Unlike G5.
G5
G5 seems to be a more of a risk taker; his play style being a foil to Pro7ect. I distinctly remember watching one match where G5 defended a zergling rush with two cannons and a handful of zealots. Honestly before this, I’ve only ever heard hearsay about G5. I knew he was on EG when they still had a BW squad and that the EG guys would talk about him on State of the Game, but I never got to see him play. So I was pretty thrilled that he was playing AND he’s on Team USA AND he was Protoss. Really cool. Sayle was hyping him by saying he also beat Boxer, which I had no idea about. For anyone who’s a little late to the BW scene like myself, I found a casted VOD of the matches here (Game 1) and here (Game 2). So finally getting to watch him play was a real treat. I finally had my curiousity sated.
G5 seems to have a very fluid, risk taking style. He has his own gameplay quirks which threw off Sayle’s and Elegant’s casting. For example, in the Qualifier #5, Game 2, G5 vs Zergboy, he tries to mine out the back path minerals to try a sneaky sneaky attack later. Zergboy’s early pokes deter this and he then transitions into a zealot/archon push. I usually see storms and mass goons/zealots when I watch PvZ. And I don’t often see tricksy moves like that. I think it’s refreshing to see a game that doesn’t play out the way everyone expects it to. Sometimes I feel like BW games seem over after like 5-10 minutes because the casters and old-school fans just know how the game plays out.
Has anyone else been watching the TLS? Have any favorite games or players? And is anyone else loving the Periphery intro song?
