Recently I was involved in a discussion with friends about our favorite video games. I started to recall all the hours and wasted time I've spent playing these games. After reading an article about how video games affect health, I decided to take a two week break from all video games.
I have gone much longer without playing video games before, but that was during times when I was extremely busy (soccer, theater, choir, etc.). Now that nothing is going on, an off-season, I have decided to take this break.
My hope is that I start to be more productive in school. Although I am a very good student (I have straight A's), I am a HUGE procrastinator. Often times instead of doing my homework I am playing video games. During this time I also want to find a new hobby to involve myself with. I have also realized I haven't read a novel in a very long time. I used to be an avid reader, but I stopped most likely due to video games.
Thanks for reading, and if anyone has a suggestion on a good book to read, I'd love to hear it! Wish me luck. ^.^

I already read it. As much hype as it had, I didn't enjoy it like I thought I would.

I'm fond of Steinbeck right now, try out East of Eden.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was a book I really enjoyed reading. It's hard to describe the actual plot of, but it's kind of a philosophical look at some things. Keep in mind that it really drags at 2 specific points. For the most part it's an awesome read and you'll zip through it, but when you get to those points take a break and read it slowly to retain your sanity.

I'd recommend just developing good study habits during your hiatus which will help you tremendously in college if you decide to go into a reputable major.

Video games waste of time!! pshhaw.... You my friend don't need new hobbies.

I did the same thing for a week and was very productive for that week. Then I started playing again and all that progress was lost. I feel like I should do the same thing again and try reintroducing it after like a month in moderation or something. I hope it works for you better than it did for me!

Congratulations on stepping out of your comfort zone and trying something new. Far too many people stick with what they know for so long until it becomes dull. Taking breaks are also a really good way to revitalize a love for something because coming back is that much sweeter.

dont forget to keep that balance of doing stuff besides video games once your two weeks are up

Kudos on this, I've been doing something similar for a few weeks myself. Found myself jumping from game to game around the beginning of the month w/o making any real progress in anything. So I decided I should cut myself off from everything but SC and even then only let myself play SC for an hour or two tops. I decided to keep SC in my lifestyle as I find it very rewarding and always feel invigorated after an hour or so of laddering.
With the extra time I've found keeping up with working out has been much easier, started getting things done I'd been putting off, been reading a little more, and have been a little more social. Granted last week I indulged a little more in games than I should have but overall it has been going good for me and has definitely boosted my productivity.
Good luck on your own efforts. My advice is to use the time to get better about not procrastinating school stuff (though I tend to be the same way), but more importantly spend time being active or exploring new things. School is important but unless your completely vested in what your studying I recommend taking the time to round out your interests and activities so you don't get burnt out or just go back to video games as a time sink.

Try no Internet for two weeks instead! About 12 times harder!

Two weeks with no internet? Hmm... That will be my challenge later on.

Why don't you read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K Dick
