December 14th was my birthday (happy bday~~!).
My friends asked me what I wanted to do - whether I wanted to go out for dinner, or go to happy hour for a few drinks, or have people over my place....
I told them no. I actually didn't end up doing anything that night. Just got home from work, had a quick dinner, went to the gym, and called it a night, It was so relaxing after a long week. Some people don't understand. It was my birthday - I should go out and party, have fun with everyone, get wasted on shots. But that's not what I felt like doing. So fuck that. I'll party when I feel like it. If I partied on this particular day, I wouldn't enjoy it. And then, that just defeats the purpose, doesn't it?
It's my birthday, and so I'll do whatever the fuck I want. Call off the party. Don't get me wrong, I fuckin love parties, hanging out with all my good friends, having some crazy fun. Just didn't feel like it. Call it off, and we're doing it next week.
So there you have it. I don't need a specific day to do specific things. I'll celebrate my birthday whenever I want, however I want. If that happens to be 6 months later, then so be it. Letting arbitrary rules dictate how you want to do things is dumb.
I do what I want.
edit - Oh one last thing. I apologize for the lack of any funny roommate stories. I wish I had more. I'm sure something crazy will happen in my life soon, and I'll be able to share it with you guys.

Good for you. I have a very similar attitude. I can party pretty much any day of the year. I don't need a special cause for celebration. If I wanna party I'm gonna fucking party. But if I wanna be left alone I stay at home and enjoy a quiet evening with a good scotch. Dates are pretty much meaningless. Alos, it's not like my birth was some sort of achievement. I just got squeezed out of a womb...

Pretty much, all people should do on that day is high 5 their mom and say thanks coz personally I would abort my ass in her place.

I think it's really good that you made the decision to rest and relax if that's what you want to do on your birthday Your friends can certainly celebrate with you another time, if you wish.
surfinbird1 and TheKefka... I think you're taking the idea of "celebrating the anniversary of a birth day" too literally. I don't know a single person who actually celebrates their bloody, exhausting birth that gave their mother stretch marks. As far as I know, it's just become the day where family and friends celebrate how much they appreciate and like you. And they can also do that at other times too (retirement parties, weddings, etc.), but having it on the anniversary of your birth seems like a rather obvious date to do it, despite the number being arbitrary.

Why the "fuck this/fuck that" attitude about your friends trying to show you a good time on your birthday?
"Letting arbitrary rules dictate how you want to do things is dumb." People are just trying to make you happy. No one is trying to impose "arbitrary rules" onto your life. Birthday celebrations are part of every culture I can think of.

"Letting arbitrary rules dictate how you want to do things is dumb." People are just trying to make you happy. No one is trying to impose "arbitrary rules" onto your life. Birthday celebrations are part of every culture I can think of. should've mentioned in the op that i do appreciate my friends wanting to show me a good time. and it's something some people take for granted, to have friends who are going out of their way to treat you to a nice dinner and drink together.
that should have been the disclaimer on the op, before i went into how i sometimes would rather do what i want, instead of what people think i should do on a particular day, especially if those two things conflict. those societal norms (like need to party with friends on your bday) are the arbitrary rules i was talking about. when i was in middle/high school, i abided by those norms because i felt obligated to. even if i didn't really feel like it that day. ever since i've entered college and graduated, i've been living my life with less of these boundaries.
and so people should understand that on the day of your birthday, you should do what you want. if that's partying with your fiends, then go for it. if it's having time by yourself, sipping a nice whiskey, watching TSL, by all means do it.

Birthday celebrations are part of every culture I can think of. That arbitrary rule is why that whole dilemma can even come up: You're happier without a party, but the "I am happier when not partying with you" line can and will be misinterpreted horribly. If your birthday is supposed to be for you to have fun then you should decide whether to party or not.
Actual friends won't mind you telling them that you just want to rest that day though.

I used to think like you OP until I realized people love to party and want any excuse to get together and GET CRAZY!!
You may like to read or w/e, I do too, but you're not going to remember that night. You should go out anyway, even if you don't feel like it, and make that night a memory! Also, consider yourself lucky you had friends who were pushing you to get out. They just want the best for you.
Anyways, live and let live. It's your life. Live it up and Happy Belated B-day!

Thats awesome, I wish I coudl do things like that. I seem to confrom too heavily to what society expects. I feel shitty if I don't do anything on my birthday, even if I don't particularly wan't to do anything etc...
