Something like Cowboy Bebop is significantly more accessible (especially since it was dubbed well, a rarity). It has likeable heroes and vicious enemies  . Yet, past the surface level, each character has depth and some back story so that you actually start to care about an animated character. And it does that without ever getting bogged down in drama and you start to get why people love anime. It is a pretty fun anime throughout, despite tending more towards the serious side. And then it has a killer soundtrack to boot.Death Note is a good clever psychological show, especially the first half. The second half was okay, but a huge letdown from the first half. For those looking for something similar, I've heard very good things about Monster, but haven't personally watched it yet. If you're looking for something (mostly) less serious, try Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. I'm actually currently in the process of watching it and it's been surprisingly good so far despite looking like it's made for a younger audience. It's fun/goofy on the surface, but again, there's some solid depth to it both in characters and philosophy... which seems to be a key to successful anime. Trigun is another oldie, but a goodie. Like Cowboy Bebop, just about every American who got into anime through adult swim has watched Trigun. The First half is much more lighthearted than the second half, but both halves are good in their own way. If you just want to watch something that's crazy nonsensical fun, try Fooly Cooly (FLCL). Another oldie from the adult swim lineup and a very short series so you won't waste too much time getting through it even if it's not your thing. Of the Gundam series, I'd say that the most accessible is Gundam Seed and would start there (I still haven't seen the original series though, only 08th MS Team from that timeline which was a decent one). I'd say that Seed had more likeable characters than Gundam Wing and some decent depth, but not quite as much political depth as Wing. If you want something along the lines of Dragon Ball Z, you'll need to get into the Shonen Manga style shows. One Piece (pirates - starts slow, but great story that's still 5-10 years from completion), Bleach (soul reapers - starts well, but falls apart), Naruto (ninjas - still haven't seen it), or something older like Inuyasha (demons - interesting, but just seems to go on and on) or Yu Yu Hakusho (punk kid vs demons - another cartoon network hit from long ago). | ||
