Shaman King - Kid becomes a shaman, needs save the world etcetc

Was my first Anime after DBZ/Digimon/Pokemon phase. But i like the light hearted Anime like the ones i mentioned. I need to find more though.

Seconding Code Geass. Seriously awesome stuff. Another one I liked a lot is Kenichi. Similar to Dragonball Z, goofy fighting show but without superpowers.
The downside to anime sometimes is they don't always get to tell a full story because they only get 1 or 2 seasons animated. (Berserk, Kenichi) Code Geass had a complete story though.

I liked Berserk, Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist, and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. The latter hasn't been mentioned yet in the thread and isn't on that big chart posted earlier, but it's a pretty interesting supernatural murder mystery.

Forget everything everyone said.

Watch Trigun, Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell.

Just do it, these are real anime and not girly teehee kawaii teen anime bullshit that is on the TV nowadays.

The combination of these two. I've never seen Ghost in the Shell all the way through. and I've only seen Cowboy Bebop half way, but Trigun and Full Metal Alchemist I would swear on my life will be two of the best animes you have ever seen. Full Metal Alchemist especially because it's written by Square Enix - Not sure how you can get better writers for an anime than that.

I honestly think that Full Metal Alchemist is by far the best anime I've seen to date - and I've even seen a few a episodes of Death Note! hahaha.

It will make you jaws drop. That's how good it is.

Ow you

I really liked gundam seed if you like mecha.

Just don't watch Gundam Seed Destiny

I regret doing that still.

How can people think this? Brotherhood had a WAY better ending with WAY more information. I mean, granted the movie for the end of Brotherhood wasn't as good as the movie that ended the original, but Brotherhood does such a good job of explaining alot of the characters, and it explores more of the world they live in (like the North?) Plus the homonculi are way cooler too and a play a much neater part of the story than they did in the original series IMO.

^Agree, I like Brotherhood better

I just finished Code Geass yesterday. That was a very good anime. Very wide-audience appeal, every episode has a lot of action in it, huge character development throughout the story. That's what I'd recommend.

Also Death Note, Trigun, FMA, FMA: BH, Clannad, Air, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, first 2/3 of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Pinhead Larry in the streets, Dirty Dan in the sheets.

For the record, Brotherhood follows the manga directly and has a much more coherent storyline. The original FMA reached the end of the monthly manga series pretty quickly and then just made up some shit to cover for the fact that they didn't know where it was headed.
Brotherhood >> FMA.

A few recent favorites of mine have been;

Kuroko no Basuke, Tsuritama, Oreimo, Sengoku Basara, Persona 4, Tiger & Bunny, Ao no Exorcist, Durarara!!, and Togainu no Chi. I'm currently watching Psycho Pass which is also really enjoyable if you're interested in the crime/action/mild Sci-fi genre.

Hmm.. try the following.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - (Mech/Comedy) - I've seen this about 3 times. It's awesome, has an amazing storyline, amazing fights while being a hilarious spoof of other Mech animes. It's only 27 episodes so well worth watching. I have to recommend this to ANYONE I know who watches/has watched anime and not seen it.
Darker than Black - (Action/Sci-Fi/Paranormal) Not much to say other than its awesome, a bit confusing, especially since throughout most of the series not much is revealed about the main character. Again, awesome fights and deep storyline.
FLCL - (Comedy/Random/Mech) I fell in love with this the first time I watched it. It's very short (6 episodes) and gripping, funny, great action (wouldn't really call them fight?) scenes and some of the best animation there is out there.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - (Mech) - Starts off slow, but its one of the better mech series around. Definitely worth a watch.

Death Note was good for the first half, but it got quite poor towards the end and had one of the most anti-climatic endings of anything ever. Definitely not in the top tier of stuff.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Samurai Champloo, Hellsing Ultimate or Initial D.

Samurai Champloo - Follows the story of 2 samurai who follow a girl around that wants to find a Samurai that smells like sunflowers. Story sounds bad, but the action is great. IIRC, same producer as Cowboy Bebop, so if you like that, you will like this without a doubt. Has similar comedy that Cowboy Bebop has too.

Hellsing Ultimate - About an organisation called Hellsing that eliminate vampires. Honestly, I've watched a lot of the really popular action Animes. By far, Hellsing has THE BEST action scenes I've seen. Unfortunately, Hellsing Ultimate isn't finished yet, ep 10 comes out next month apparently. Highly recommend watching, it is my favourite anime after Death Note.

Initial D - An anime about mountain car racing in Japan, where the main character drives an AE86. Really good anime, has a lot of funny moments. The only downfall is some of the stupidity in driving "tactics" that let them win sometimes, but otherwise this anime is really awesome.

In a list of really popular/recommended anime that pretty much every person that is a fan of anime will watch - the list will look like (no order):

Berserk
Darker than Black
FLCL
Black Lagoon
Samurai Champloo
Death Note
Cowboy Bebop
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Trigun
Initial D
Hellsing Ultimate
Gurren Lagaan
Gungrave
Elfen Lied
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Code Geass
Ghost in the shell

I would highly suggest getting your hands on all of those and watching them before you get anything else. They're all pretty much the most "mainstream" animes. People that have only watched an anime series or two will definitely have watched any of those.

If you're not sure what to watch, give Code Geass definitely a try, there are some plot points that can 'hurt' your brain or some small things might seem really unsensical at times (it has its flaws), but the big picture is really wonderful. One of the 'newer' animes that I'd recommend.

And why has nobody mentioned the most superior Gundam series, Gundam Wing yet ?
Imo it's superior to Gundam SEED.

I think it's the most enjoyable gundam series and one of the best anime works to date. Not only is the story great, the character interaction and depth of a lot of characters amazing, it also handles a lot of mature subjects, plus, it has two of the best theme songs ever. JUST WILD BEAT COMMUNICATION and Rhytm Emotion !!!

One thing you might be annoyed by is how fcking suicidal Heero is.

You can contact me if you're looking for some really incredible quality source for Gundam Wing.

I'd also recommend Rurouni Kenshin, Battousai X, Samourai X, whatever the title is ... but mostly season 1 and 2 are great. Not a big fan of the last season, but still a great watch.

i used to listen to those while i worked out and ran for wrestling practice back in highschool

such nerd chills

@op:
my recommendations (in no order of importance)
1. Mobile Suit: Gundam Wing
2. Full Metal Alchemist (Brotherhood or not, it's good either way)
3. Code Geass & Lelouch of the Rebellion
4. Elfen Lied
5. Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X)
6. Last Exile
7. 07-Ghost (I wish they'd continue this one, omg)
8. Stellvia of the Universe
9. Twelve Kingdoms
10. Scrapped Princess

there are tons more, but i don't want to go through all of my anime.

oh and omg 11. Hajime No Ippo

Gundam Wing is pretty much off the charts awesome, but it isn't for people looking for simple entertainment. It's pretty deep stuff once you come to understand the background of everything that's going on.

Cowboy Bebop is unbelievably good, still my favorite anime a decade after I first saw it.

And if you haven't watched Evangelion...you should get on that
