I don't watch anime at all (well, I watched a little bit of Dragon Ball Z and Naruto) and I'm interested in finding an anime series to watch. What's a good one that's pretty easy to get into and is really good?

Do you have some genres/themes you like? Do you want something for younger or mature audiences? Sci-fi, romance, comedy, slice of life, critically acclaimed, etc. give some specifications.

Or alternatively just watch Neon Genesis Evangelion because it has everything.

Death note, best anime/manga ever and i'm sure anyone who usually watches animes and manga will agree.

Death note is great but only bother with the first half (first 24 episodes). The other half is garbage. I remember back in BW days when Death Note first came out and all the progamers liked to practice using the IDs "L" and "Light."

The anime discussion thread usually links this to people requesting anime, although this chart is starting to get a little bit old. Still, it's a great reference to a lot of genres.

Personally, I usually recommend romantic comedies to my friends getting into anime because they're generally the easiest to get into. Try something like Toradora! (you can also find this on the chart above)

what's wrong with the 2nd half?

The best character in the whole show is dead. And I hated the idea of the L training organization. He was supposed to be a unique super genius.

I like to watch anime that are more philosophical in their themes and so I recommend the original Evangelion for that. It can take itself way too seriously sometimes, but in terms of having such a rich textured storyline, I think its one of the best.

In terms of originality and overall quality (including graphics, audio, and story/theme), I'd probably say Nichijou and Hanasaku Iroha were two of the better series from 2011. Try those for a spin.

But the storyline is what makes death note so great. If the story had other different characters as the main, it would still be just as good.

It's my personal favorite anime but I'd not recommend it to people new to the whole thing, simply because it can be... confusing without lots of background info.

-Death Note
-Berserk (Medival-ish story, pretty cool and defined characters, lots of brawling and epic battle music)
-GunGRAVE (Kind of a mafia-esque story with lots of shooting and a strong connected story. Also includes lots of "superhuman" fun things people encounter.)
-Cowboy Bebop (Space Cowboys. Bountyhunters running around and.. trying to collect bounties. Quite awesome story in the long run, AWESOME music)

No i'm sure that anybody who can realize major plotholes and the likes will realize that after a certain point it plummets and becomes incredibly mediocre, only being saved by animation and soundtrack. There are a ton of better animes and mangas.
The death note anime is fine, but if the animation and soundtrack hadn't been as superb as they were, it would really only be a mediocre anime. The story has a lot of flaws, but it's a fine anime, but calling it the best ever really isn't true, it might be your opinion, which is fine, but yea.

If you want to get into anime, i'd recommend something like Cowboy bebop, it's the only thing i'll recommend with this little information, give me more information about genres and stuff and i can make a more educated guess at a series you'd enjoy.

Also, generally sub>dub.

Edit: This isn't the thread to discuss death note though, so i wont go further down that path of discussion.
From the Ghastly Eyrie I can see to the ends of the world, and from this vantage point I declare with utter certainty that this one is in the bag!

Yes, Death Note + Show Spoiler +
was ruined after L died. They also made Light into some crazed psychopath rather than the character he started out as, which was supremely disappointing. And to me, the drawing changed a lot as the series went on; might be my imagination. That and they killed Light, which was just stupid.

As for some good to start out with, I'd stray from long running ones so you can watch something and get an idea for your tastes and the genres. To cover some basic bases:

Death Note
Ouran High School Host Club
Samurai Champloo
Neon Genesis Evangelion

if you're looking for something short and fun, Gurren Lagann and FLCL are both good.

also, most people enjoy Cowboy Bebop: odds are you're one of them.

Mobile suit Gundam of course, not the Anno domini or cosmic era shit, but the original universal century timeline. Doesn't get old even after 30 years.

Alright, thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I've started watching Toradora! like Jonsaboy suggested, and I'm really enjoying it. I'll definitely check out more of the suggested stuff, thanks.

Wow, a guy comes to TL and asks for anime, gets recommended death note, and at least 3 people mention + Show Spoiler +
one of the main characters death, and name
. really?

But here's a list of what I'd recommend in no particular order.

Death-Note - genius gets a note that lets him kill people, and does battle with a genius who wants to stop him
Mirai Nikki - a god gives 13 people the ability to see fragments of a possible future, and makes them battle to the death
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - Giant robots, manly speeches, epic fights.
Steins; Gate - Scientist accidentally invents a form of time travel, shit goes down.
Darker than Black - some humans have superpowers, all of them have a consequence for using them, except one guy with no consequence who hunts/kills other super humans.
Elfen Lied - (my first anime) a naked chick with weird powers kills a lot of people
Code Geass - Genius with a superpower controls people fighting in giant robots
Angel Beats! - watch it and find out

The next ones are all sort of girly, but still good. maybe not your best anime to start on, but work your way through them after you've watched some other anime
Lucky Star
Chuubinyou
Kokoro Connect
Clannad / Clannad Afterstory
Kanon
K-On!
Just break the rules, and you see the truth.

oh yeah and i almost forgot. School days is a must-watch. Not as good as death note, but it is up there with one of the best.
It will make you jaws drop. That's how good it is.
