i started watching anime with bleach. i can recommend it if you have a LOT of time to spend. some characters are badass but half of the show is mediocore imo.
one piece on the other hand is a little bit better overall.
fairy tail has better visuals compared to them and quite similiar in context.
the first anime without the "good guys get beaten to death, then save the day with the power of friendship" concept was toradora and i quite liked it

Death Note has been the only anime I've really gotten into, and I agree that + Show Spoiler +
once L dies there is no point to continue watching the show: It should have just ended right now. L might be my favorite fictional character ever.
.

I actually have watched around 100 episodes of Detective Conan since I really love mysteries, but that show is kind of ruined by the idiotic premise.

I'm gonna hijack the thread a little bit with a more specific question: What are good animes for someone that really likes mysteries and Death Note? I don't care for big robots, epic fights, and honestly I don't even care all that much about art style. I like Sherlock Holmes type mental battles, which is why I loved Death Note. Other stuff like it? Or that has really good mysteries/detective work?

need to know genres of interest, but Cowboy Bebop is the best to have non-anime people first watch

it helps that its dubs are actually good too (if you want english speaking)

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu and Toradora are both good anime's to start with, and my all-time favourites.

Boku no Piko is probably the best anime there is.

If you watch suzuharu no yuuutsu I definitely recommend watching the movie afterwards ( suzumiyaharuhi no shoushitsu), one of my favorite movies.

Also seconding cowboy bebop and samurai champloo. I think cowboy bebop might be one of the best anime to start out with in general. Also its one of the rare cases where dub > sub.

Anti-climactic?

The ending of Death Note is the only thing that redeems the mess that is the 2nd half.

Death Note's greatest failure remains that:

+ Show Spoiler +
For as much as the show attempts to portray itself as a battle of wits, the show is eventually ended on a single suspension of logic.

Near makes the conclusion that Mikami is Light's henchman. He has no actual evidence of this, and he spots him out by watching a ton of TV screens at the same time, and then magically guessing that Mikami is the likely ally of Light, based on his behaviour.

It makes literally no sense, and it perfectly displays how the show had eventually gotten too clever for it's own sake, and the writers themselves couldn't keep up with all the plotting and the scheming, so they resolved it by just once, suspending the reason, and making a magical leap.

"If you let us make this one leap in logic, we promise to end the series."

The loss of L was a major blow for the show, especially because it relied so heavily on the conflict between L and Light. The show could have innovated itself, but it just rebooted the same setup, now replacing L with a miniature replica that was just atrocious.

Death Note was good fun, but one kind of has to turn his brain of to some degree. Nobody will ever know what the fuck was going on when they were trading Death Notes in the forest.

Omg how could I forget to mention the Hellsing series? Somebody mentioned that earlier up and that was definitely a great anime. I don't believe Hellsing Ultimate is fully english dubbed yet though (is it? anyone know?). But I have an anime watching system lol. Monday through Friday I watch 1 episode of a particular series. Then on Saturday and Sunday, I pick 2 really good different animes to watch. Hellsing used to fill the Sunday slot that's how good it was. Then it got replaced with Clannad after I finished the series lol.

But yeah, definitely Hellsing was awesome. Crispin Freeman does a fantastic job of dubbing Alucard.

Seems like everyone's recommendations are animes that aired at least 5+ years ago. Is modern anime really that bad?

Sword Art Online. Seriously. The first 15 episodes (or 1st season so to speak) is pretty good. Season 2 isn't as good as the first one, but it's still okay (it's still airing btw). Check it out though, I thought it was awesome.

Nope! But lots of old anime is great (I just watched Trigun like six months ago and loved it) and it can take awhile for newer animes to get exposure/dubbed.

Newer animes I really like are Black Butler, Darker Than Black, and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (much better than original series imo).

Yes and no, thats about as long as it takes to usually get the anime into mainstream "america" with licensing and translation issues. For example some popular animes like Black Butler and Deadman Wonderland are actually like 2-3 years old in Japan.

Two little known anime, two of my favorites. I think they are also a great entry point for people that are on the fence about anime.

Now and Then Here and There - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Now_and_Then,_Here_and_There

Berserk is pretty well known, and its incredible - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Berserk_episodes

Also Check out the Berserk movie trilogy thats currently in production - http://berserk.wikia.com/wiki/Berserk_Golden_Age_Arc_I:_Egg_of_the_Supreme_Ruler

A lot of anime panders to either young men, or young girls. A lot of the the characters are way too cool and pretentious, or 2D with gigantic breasts and unexplainable attraction to the male protagonist. If you're ok with that you could watch about half the anime series every season and be well and truly satisfied. If you want a really good show that happens to be an anime your choices are much more limited.

I would look at these ones as much watch recommendations.

Cowboy Bebop Simply put one of the greatest animes ever produced. Multidimensional characters, great art, storytelling and humour. The movie is a good followup as well.
Neon Genesis Evangelion A very good re imagining of a mecha show. Has some convoluted and complicated symbolism and undertones, and the ending is supremely disappointing. The movies that have been coming out are a reboot of the series and will have a proper ending unlike the show, but even with these flaws its a must watch.
FLCL Crazy pyscho mindfuck. Good humour, great art, but a lot of its quality is difficult to interpret with Japanese puns and lightning fast dialogue.
Bakemonogatari Interesting show, great art, good humour.

This Second tier is good animes, that sort of remind me of other animes, but not quite as good. Or just animes that are consensus good shows, but not my favorite. Or just personal favorites.

Baccano - Kind of like a homage to Cowboy Bebop. Short, but very enjoyable.
Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai - Good high school character drama, some funny parts, and very believable characters.
Deathnote - Consensus good show that I never got hugely into.
Eureka 7 - Feels like an homage to NGE, but less EVAs, more drama... kinda.
Eden of the East - Feels like it could have been the best show ever, but a slightly dissapointing end, and odd art style.
Kore wa Zombie desu ka - Bit too much harem pandering, but excellent humour and good art.
Xam'd - Feels like a show that could be done by Ghibli or Miyazaki.

I tried to stay away from those typcial Shonen Jump animes, or Ecchi animes because they are a dime a dozen and if I listed off the ones I enjoyed watching I would fill pages. And stay away from dubs. Even the 'good' ones are awful compared to the original voice acting. Japanese voice actors are pretty much celebrities in Japan and for good reason, they are specialized and specifically trained in their craft.

As for animes to avoid. I know a lot of people are recommending Gundam and Code Geass, but I would stay away from them. Gundams are massed produced series and are more often misses then hits, or regurgitations of other, better animes. As for Code Geass, I downloaded the first three season on a high recommendation of a friend. I forced myself to at least watch the first 3 episodes and that's all I was able to put myself through. I won't go into much detail, but the characters all felt disgustingly artificial and pretentious, and despite their emaciated looks are all verging on superhuman athleticism and intelligence, with no reasonable explanations. It all just felt way too stupid and I couldn't relate to any of the characters or take any of their dilemmas to heart.

A lot of the other recommended animes like Azumanga and Ouran High School Host Club are really hard to get into for first time animers. You'd probably want to be watching for a while and if you get into it alot start to branch out to other stuff.

I am not a very experienced viewer of anime/manga. I have only watched stuff that I thought would be deemed more so as a good story/plot than a good anime. I generally don't like most anime/manga, but occasionally I find something that is just an outright good story. As inexperienced of a viewer as I am, I can offer one nugget of advice, short can be sweet but long tends to be bland.

I would recommend Time of Eve. It is about a futuristic society where robots are servants to humans, and humans are at odds with how robots should be treated in society. It is really short; and if you can overlook the trace amounts of cheesiness, it is something you will most likely enjoy. That is, if you are looking for food for thought. It is a rather nice commentary on human behavior.
I like money. You like money too? We should hang out.

I second this. The 10th is coming in a few weeks, so it's not too bad of a wait.

It's worth watching, it temporarily ruined me for watching anything else with any kind of action-- for like a week after watching it anytime I'd watch any kind of action scene from anything else, my reaction was like 'oh... thats cute *sigh*'.

You can actually watch all 9 on youtube, the company releases 480p vids on their channels. Heres the first

Also not really a series, but on the subject of Vampires, Vampire Hunter D (the 2000 one) is pretty cool, nice gothic feel.

Hikaru no Go - (Comedy/Supernatural/Game) I think I mostly like this show for the character development. If you aren't hooked by the plot after a few episodes, you should know that the show goes from an 8ish to a 10 (imo) far later in the series. That's all I can say without telling you what happens. One of my favorites. You do not have to be a fan of the game Go to enjoy.

I also recommend Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist, Initial D, and Ultimate Survivor Kaiji.

Edit: Go is a character-driven series, as opposed to a plot-driven one.

Darker Than Black: The story is about an assassin who joined a certain group in search of his lost little sister. The main character is my favourite character of all time. I am dying for a third season.
Mirai Nikki: The story is a psychological battle between humans chosen by God to kill each other until the winner becomes the new God. I really liked the plot and how fucked up some characters got (esp the main female character)
Steins;Gate:It's a sci-fi anime about a few university students discovering a time machine by an accident and trying to alter events.
Spice and Wolf: It's a story of a merchant and his wolf deity companion (I actually learned a lot about business). It's not flashy, it doesn't have magical battles or epic fights. It's actually quite plain which I consider to be its charm point. I don't really like romance in animes, but this anime is the one anime that made me go d'awwwwww.
Gintama: It's really hard to explain what this anime is like because it's a very unique kind. Has every genre I can think of. This is the only anime I laughed my ass off (I didn't really like the first 20 or so eps because I went like WTF but after it gets really good, it's current over 200 episodes)

Not really. It's basically the same...filter through the crap to find the quality. Considering that most years only have 1-3 shows that are really worth looking for, it makes sense that most stuff is older.

If you want stuff within 5 years...I'd say...

Darker than Black - Good action series with good animation. Gets philosophical, so avoid if you hate that stuff. Watch second season and OVAs if you really liked the first.
Bakemonogatari - Fanservicey, but enjoyable for layered dialogue and wordplay (Japanese wordplay, unfortunately). Also good action sequences, when there is action.
Heroman - Fun homage to Silver Age western super heroes, Japanese style Sentai/Kaiju shows, and general "classic" cartoons. Basic plot was also made by Stan Lee (sucks for him that no Western dub yet).
Fate/Zero - Better if you know the source material for Fate/Stay Night, but works fine as a standalone series.
Another - Best horror/supernatural mystery I've seen in a while. Definitely recommended if you like those genres, worth checking out the first episode if you're curious.

There's other stuff I'm forgetting, plus I don't really watch shows until they're finished...
Average means I'm better than half of you.
