Do you have a recurring sense of unease? Like something has been gnawing on you all these years, and you are unable to talk about it to anyone. You can't, because they'd think you are crazy. But you know, you just know:" Something is off" You always saw the connection where others just walked along.
I do, I did have that feeling. Every once a year or two it would come back, this thought I couldn't get rid of. I was unable to reach catharsis, any kind of peace within myself was impossible, that is, until tonight. It dawned upon me that I was not the only one after all..
In the midst of following sc2 and mtg, I was drawn to a special place on the Internet. One link left to another, and yet again I had found myself having to face this question. But this time, I did not just sit there helplessly, pushing my hands on the sides of my head, quavering back and forth. No, this time I started looking for allies and found one, out of this time. Some poor fellow, in the exact same spot as me, no doubt about it. Alone, helpless, scared of what this all could mean and no one to tell about it, no one who would believe him.
It's from September 25th 2004, my antivir pops up when I go to the site so I'll just write it here. The site is Acmlm's Board and this is the only post in the particular thread.
By user Nebetsu: Dont know wether to post this here or entertainment, so I'm posting here. Anyways: Listen to In Flames - Cloud Connected and tell me if it sounds like the second world in Jazz Jackrabbit... >.>
NEBETSU, WHERE DO YOU COME FROM, WHAT DID YOU SEE,WHAT WAS THE WORLD LIKE IN YOUR TIME, PLEASE TELL ME. But of course we cannot even be ascertain he is alive anymore, it's more than possible he died and took his wisdom with him.
Anyways, here; ( first repeating part in each one)
Known the game for 15 years, the song for 10. I haven't listened to In Flames since 2005, but I still can't escape this dilemma.
e. Cliff Bleszinski who made Jazz Jackrabbits made also Unreal Tournament 2004 which is sick fun. After that, some terrible FPS games before resigning from Epic last month. If anyone can get in touch with him, please force him at gunpoint to make JJ3. ty
e2. Alexander_Brandon, who wrote game music for Epic, is pretty interesting too. Apparently was even a voice in Skyrim, would you look at that. I'm going to try and get a hold of that book.
Oh, how I loved jj2. Probably one of my first games on the PC, and I still have it, though it's been a while since last playing it. One of the best game soundtracks ever, too
Doesn't this happen all the time with music :o Kind of the nature of music that is made without an education or survey of music to build upon and be aware of. When people just mess around with an instrument, they tend to create the same catchy things, being exposed to the same influences and casual interests in music.
In classical music people are often aware of the grand history of music that they are adding themselves to, so they tend to make conscious allusions or alterations that other people educated in the same way will recognize and appreciate. But I imagine those who made video game music back in the day and self-taught rockish type musicians are far less conscious of the history they're adding to, and are just trying to write down the first catchy thing they can come up with. I will bet that if you look hard enough or ask enough people, someone will know another song that has a similar sound. Think about that Coldplay Vida la Vida or whatever fiasco.
Well, yes, yes it does happen all the time and everywhere. I recently read about Nabokov: turns out there has been connection found with about 40 years earlier book with a similar theme and one girl character was named Lolita. Nabokov lived a long time in the same neighborhood as the author. Subconscious is pretty crazy.
It's definitely interesting when melodies from video game music find their way into the mainstream. Here's one I recently found out about. Sonic 2's Sky Chase Zone, and the subsequent release of Barenaked Ladies' Pinch Me. When I realized this similarity I found a pretty good mashup of the two on youtube. Here are the three songs.

Umberto Eco (who is not only an author but also a literary critic) discusses this phenomena at length and its implications in the interpretation of authors' works. You might find this essay interesting: http://www.themodernword.com/eco/eco_author.html
