There are still many people on TL who were around before the SC2 era. And there were also many of those who joined at the beginning of the SC2 era that will understand where I'm coming from. Still this is worth a read.
Do you know what I love about Korean tournaments the best? They are always on between midnight and 5 am.
Why was that so amazing for me? Starcraft was my thing. It was my passion. And because of that I would wake up 5 days out of the week to watch every single minute of the Starcraft matches.
Only those of you like me who were truly passionate about the sport were up watching it with me. There was always a VOD shortage and while the community was great at not having spoilers, there was always so much to keep up with it wasn't worth falling behind. And if you missed something for a split second you would scour the LR thread reading the play by play.
What did I also like about Korean tournament? They were in Korean. Korean speech was like background music for Starcraft. While the majority now crave English casting, before it wasn't even an afterthought. If we want to know something we would have to rely on heros like SNM to translate for us. But that was rarely needed. We just enjoyed the game for what it was and didn't need to hear some English casters opinions throughout the game. Even if it was a new strategy or build I always had a concept of what was going on.
Do you know what I miss about the Korean Tournaments? It was the streams. Streams were limited and usually everyone new the streamers. We were best friends with them. We would thank them and hate them simultaneously as they always determined what we must watch during commercials breaks. It was mostly Kpop which made me love kpop. These breaks made me fall in love with Korean women and want to learn more about Korean culture. There was an urge, almost an urgency to learn more about Korea because they represented so much that I could look up to.
I miss being up late at night. I used to be inspired. Why am I not inspired anymore? It's not my personal life. I have had plenty of girlfriends that had to be comfortable with me watching SC every night. Now I just watch VODs in my free time. TL is my only SC life that I'm clinging to right now. If I didn't have an urge to master Sniper Ridge with my protoss right nowSniper Ridge I wouldn't even be playing an SC game whether it be SC 1.5 or SC 2.0.
I try to convince myself that maybe if I start to commit myself more on here than it will justify my time being worthwhile. But I need to find that energy again to stay up at night.
I'm not blaming SC2 for anything. This is completely personal. I think if I had something to blame it would be the VODS. If the vods didn't exist I wouldn't be so lazy. Starcraft doesn't deserve one less life viewer. It doesn't deserve a fan who feigns to be a fan but doesn't have it installed on his computer.
I'm going to play more. I'm going to watch more live. I promise. Not that it matters to you guys. No one notices anymore.
Do you know what I loved about Korean tournaments? People used to recognize me when I joined the chat. I used to have online friends to spark discussion with. Now the environment is more hostile. Where is that family I used to have? I even miss the evil step brothers/sisters that would hate on me cause of my SKT/Bisu fanboism. Rivalry is a sign of love. There is no rivalry anymore.

Do you know what I miss? SKT will win proleague this year threads. I miss all of them. I miss the way people used to bash my favorite team. I miss how people would call SKT zerg trash. I miss the way Bisu was hated because of his haircute. I miss how people used to focus on hating the players not the game. I miss that people never worried about anything but the rankings of their team.
I guess I miss a lot. And while typing this I was interrupted a lot so I'm sure you can notice the several different trains of thought.
I don't blame anyone for the state I'm in. I don't blame a game for where I'm at. I blame myself. I'm stubborn. I fight against myself to accept the changes we've made to how viewership and involvement works. I know it's only my fault. I promise you, some day soon I'll be there at night. I'll join back again. We will rejoice in the games. And I will have my game night dorritos!
Do you know who I miss? Mystlord, if you don't remember mystlord then you don't remember what streaming was like in the past.

But the breaks are more likely to fall CJ's way here.
The best match-up of the night is obviously sKyHigh v. Leta, but I find Movie v. I was not a fan of the chats except when a translator would come in. I agree with everything else you said. I think most of all I miss Matoo's 24/7 stream of the two korean gaming channels. All those other shows that would air were pretty entertaining and you saw a glimpse of other professional video games. I only made this account to thank him for it.
My favorite starcraft matches were when Stork stopped slacking and beat the shit out of Flash or Jaedong like it wasn't even close. I play zerg and he's still the progamer I respect most. One of my favorite games that comes to mind is Jaedong vs Stork that lasted so long Jaedong ran out of his side of the map's resources. Stork had nothing but High Templar bombing the shit out of Jaedong everywhere. Day9 even did a daily on it the following day. Good times.
Edit: Also the best part was when the camera would pan to Jaedong and he was fucking drenched in sweat looking like he was trying to murder his opponent with his thoughts.

Yea...awesome days...although I came to the scene in 2010 and made an account few months later. It was so nice of people thanking streamers and appreciating what ever there is. Contrary on the other side.......high self-entitlement is all I could see.

I know exactly what you mean, I miss all those things (and people) too. I only wish I got into BW before 2010, but even the two (well, 1.5) years of having to stay awake till 2 or 4 am, suffer through (and then start to like) k-pop and just read through the LR threads and laugh at the antics some people would pull were completely worth it.
I miss the awesome LR OPs, usually accompanied by stunning MSPaint works of art (or genuine art by hyde/disciple).
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/H2XzN.jpg) And making fun of progamers.
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/NqbxA.jpg) Kwanro, the hero zerg SKT needed but not the one we deserved T_T
And the threads like Secret Terran Meeting, KT Academy, Hwaseung House or SvZ Summons.
Proleague generated so much good content, it's not the same anymore.

FREUDIAN SLIP? I THINK SO.
And lol...the history of BW made for some good chat. I remember not giving a shit about Bisu/Stork because at the end of the day, they would lose to Shine's magical hydralurker on 1k banked minerals/gas lololololo

Yup..the old Mystlord,Kentor, Roffles, Kona, and Boes (and others) streams were the best . The community was so small everyone knew eachother and I'd even say that we were all friends. I loved making live report threads with shitty paint banners and just watching with all my bros all night..good times .

Just registered to say that I always enjoyed watching the streams and chat, although I never participated in the community, My roommate watched BW religiously and would always stream it on our TV at odd times of the night and chat with people on stream. I got into BW and everything through that and appreciated how difficult it was to get anything from streams etc. Special shout out to nana-shin for awesome streaming+overlay+k-pop + whoever translated on there randomly.

Who's that guy who used to stream pretty HQ stuff and always had good (yes, I call them good) Kpop between games and had a conflict with GTR/Roffles and ended up losing his streaming sources? I miss chilling in his stream lol.

His kpop got me hooked into kpop.
edit: Definitely Craton. And I was pretty sad when he stopped restreaming since I loved his stream quality. Nanashin also did a good job of restreaming with English labels as well as kpop and random videos during breaks.

Edit:nvm, missed delicious streaming drama. I have no excuse considering he was the person who brought me BW and was my favourite streamer

Wow that list...I always been kind of a lurker, but I remember more than half of the top names on that list. Miss nanashin streams too... Even though I wasn't that directly involved with the community, I do miss all that stuff too... Goddammit nostalgia!

Never put thought into it but the name I was trying to remember was Solinren. That was one of my first live streamers is why it meant so much to me.

Craton and Xsebt. Always used to be on.
I still remember some guy playing guitar in his underwear before the Bacchus OSL finals.

Don't worry, I still think SKT suck :p And lole at "Bisu's haircute", indeed ! And yeah, I've had awesome time with those guys, same as you. Streamers will always be our heroes, even though it will be strange to think that in only 3 or 4 years I guess. Also Alffla (I think), best LRer ever. I loved his random caps lock and broken syntax, really made me feel the passion.

You forgot Boesthius. One of the greatest streamers ever.

I thought pro Korean BW would be around forever The scene was so cool it was unreal. The vague dream that one day I'll go see it in person, what the next era of gosus would be like, how long Flash would last, what would finally become of the players who'd started so young, like Baby, and had so much potential.
The stream community and LR was never really my thing, but I always felt like I could count on everything being around, whether I was a part of it or not. Strange to see how that strength was sapped, it's a terrible loss. Even tho I love what SOSPA is doing and think it's incredibly cool, it doesn't change that the fact that the most awesome thing on earth has gone. Seriously, barely a year or two ago we were watching Nal_rA make a show called Old Boy and trying to come back into the scene as an aging veteran. Who would come back if they didn't think the scene was going to keep going forever?

Fuck, those were some scary names back then when I first joined. I was extremely intimidated by TeamLiquid guys because of its elitism. But its rubbing on me, in a good way.
|
I feel you my friend. I wish I could still stay up until 4 to shoot shit and watch those tournaments. The live report threads were always great, and every streamer had their own different angle on their stream. I was never really a huge active participant, but I loved reading the threads regardless and living vicariously through some of the stronger personalities in them.
Ahhhhhhhh College.
Nice blog, made me feel nostalgic. There's too many voices in the SC2 scene that no one has the chance to stand out other than... I dunno Seeker? opterown?

Proleague, aka the reason I never went to university in the morning from 2006 to 2010. Now I regret not joining TL earlier. I remember watching BW, before people used to restream regularly on TL, on that website whose admin's nickname was ilovecats, what was it ? sc2gg.com ?
|
Wow. Nostalgia. <3 I loved those streams. They didn't get me hooked on kpop, but I remember staying up until like 3 watching this stuff. Then my parents would come in and I'd be like, FUCK, and just switch to Teamliquid cuz they didn't know it was about Starcraft. I mean... it had a horse at the top.
|
Like six years ago, I'd be staying up for schoolwork anyways so I'd watch proleague in the background. And Corinthos (<3 you man) setting up the VLC streams was awesome. It was just so much more epic because I knew that the only live stuff that I'd be able to see of the best players in the world were those brief glimpses (before the era of streams). And then logging onto the small vod thread ASAP in the morning if I wasn't able to catch it the night before... good stuff.
|
I remember stumbling through the daum site to find a tiny, low res stream. Every day. For Starcraft.
Good times.
|
It was always fun doing homework, finishing it up, and then staying up late with cup of coffee and piece of toast translating the matches, then thinking about the games before heading off to sleep.
Those were the good days. Those were the days when I watched the games because I loved the game.
|
I used to watch all nights too... go up five in the morning to internet cafés when i was a poor student in Paris and couldn't afford having internet in my room. Shaking with excitement every time Jaedong played.
Now i don't even know if the osl is over or not. I know what you miss..
