Late at night: I do, I am watching IdrA's stream; a question floats into my mind: Who am I watching? I'm not a "fan" of him, not in regular terms for sure, his ego..., his disrespect... yet distinctivly I recognize an urge to watch him, view him, imerse in who he is...

He is not Gregory, he is Greg for everyone; First day of MLG's MvP broadcast, caption says "Greg Fields" under the smiley picture. I typed in comments: "shouldn't it be Gregory?" "it should" MLG replayed.

Today my bike was stolen. But it wasn't a bike, it was the bike (Axe commercial people!). I moved to Rotterdam with it, drove 11 hours in a fucking car at a motorway to get it here. It was the thing to have here: perfect bike lanes, swift gears, comfy seat, heaven, not a bike. Single best thing I brought here. And this night it was stolen.

I had gone to Student's orchiestra meeting, sat down in a corner, started writing a dialogue for my story, a difficult dialogue, betweem two conflicted characters; other students roughly at my age were playing the same concert they used to two weeks ago, when I had been at their first meeting.

So I came home by subway. In a dark mood. Fuck it. Fuck it I have classes tommorow, fuck it. Flash is playing this night in MvP. I'll stay. Hell yeah, I'll stay. Oh, one energy drink is left. I'll drink it, so I feel better. Loged to b.net, beat some zergs, then PvP, scouted proxy 2-gate, responded with 2-gate, fucker was killing me for 4 damn minutes! Then BMed me: - "BED MICRO" - "fuck you nigger" - my response.

At those times, you just gotta forget what person you are, a good person, not to blame yourself later for how you behaved, in a cricis in fact, but a cricis defines who you are...

Alted-Tabed from the game. TL. EGIdrA. Yeah... yeah, I'll watch IdrA solid, naive, macro play, his retro graphic stream, rage on people who fuck hell don't know to play. Because world is not nice; some f****** have stolen my Univega, some f****** are stealing his dreams, life, work, will to make an impact.

In that sense Greg is close to us, people who get fucked up by others. He represents the rage on world we have and later hinder it so people won't get scared of us. We want a leader who can proclaim our rage at world in which what's fair is an abstract. Our bosses, teachers, random "niggers" screw up our emotions to an extent we want to quit. And we do. But some stay. Greg is staying, he is streaming, and people watch and concive him as a Greg, not Gregory because he is just so close, just there, that similar.

Bikes get stolen a lot in Rotterdam. Mine is a beauty with a big chain on it when I leave it somewhere (no more than 15 minutes mind you). The best you can do is get a cheap second-hand bike which sort of feels smooth.

I'm sorry for your loss.

You think he meant it seriously? He got his bike stolen and was pissed and then someone cheesed him.

As if just using the word makes you racist. How to then discuss the issue? Anyway sorry for my selection of words, you can understand. I wish you had read the story to the end.

When I initially scanned over the blog, I saw 'fuck it', 'Flash', and 'BED MICRO', and assumed that this was one of those homoerotic fan fiction things. The actual blog turned out to be almost as weird.

I like the writing style. Very akin to some things I write.

I'm sorry about your bike, I know what that's like.

Saying "nigger" doesn't make you a racist. It's a racist word, but it doesn't make you racist when you say it, especially over the internet when you have no fucking idea who you're talking to.

If you're watching a sunset, look at the horizon JUST as the sun dips below it, an image of an idra appears.

Protip: Look away from the sun and try to calculate when it will dip below the horizon for the best effect. This is because starting at the sun before it sets will blind you.

Fucking deep man.

I think...I think that on some other level we're all IdrA. And IdrA is us. Sometimes...for a split second I just feel some sort of frustration. I don't know where it comes from. I don't know what it is. It seems to come and pass, just for an instance.

But now...now I think I understand. It's some high masters player cannon rushing on ladder. Some low GM going for a 3 base all-in to kill Greg before Hive.

Suddenly, my world makes a lot more sense. Greg is selflessly suffering for out cheese and for that we are eternally thankful.

I hate the use of the word "nigger". Why are you using it anyhow? I find it incredibly offensive to call someone a "nigger". For me it just seems as though you're mad at the PvP cheeser and the stolen bike, and you watched Idra rage and felt related to him.

Edit: I don't see how Idra is us when he's mad and we're mad. I don't understand your definition of Idra. Interpreting Idra as a representation of our anger and life's injustice is just pushing it way WAY to far... I mean he's playing a video game on a computer. Getting mad at a game is nowhere near getting mad at a thief stealing a bike. I'm confused

You make a point, in that we can't let fear of the word stop us from discussing it. It's a weak point though, given the strong emotional and historical negative connotations around it. Probably harder for those of us not from the States to understand why it's so offensive.

However, you voided any point you made when you used it as an insult. You're not trying to discuss it, you're using it in the way which evokes all the bad memories/feelings that come with it. I'd be slightly more careful slinging the word around if I were you. Just some friendly advice ^^v

It's actually a quite unique relationship, now that you bring it up, with how a majority of people who follow the scene who will always know him as the eponymous, "Greg". I think you're right, there is a part of him in us, some of it rage, some of it our humanity (I think we've all missed a few high-fives throughout life), and Idra shows a bit of all of that through his stream, even if only a little bit.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Idra is a perfect avatar for frustration, but a lot of what you brought up rings true, and I think it's worth reflecting on for a bit. Very nice read, thanks for sharing.

Who is IdrA? cleverest foreigner progamer if you ask me. You either love him or hate him, but once you've heard about him, it's very hard to remain ambivalent about him. There's many mild-mannered/polite pros that get a lot of fair-weather fans, i.e. lots of fans when they burst onto the scene with good results, that move on to supporting the next up-and-coming star... But IdrA, even if he puts out bad results, people still care because some people WANT him to lose. Drama follows him everywhere he goes.

it´s all up to the individual to decide what´s racist (A term that has shifted meaning on such a grand scale to incorporate a wide array of meanings that it´s more valid then the scientific term)

Thats why it's bm, buddy. Should we call you a lovely person then if we bm you? No, we should actually call you the most offensive thing we can imagine. Because thats actually really bad mannered.
