Hello, many of you already know who I am and what I have been doing here on teamliquid.net with my blogs. Following Chill's advice + Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
I decided to make this video in the hopes that maybe you guys would be all for a caster that has something unique and new to contribute to the world-wide esports scene.

FAQ
+ Show Spoiler +

Who are you?
My name is Benjamin "Breaker" Novotny.

Why should I support you?
It's entirely up to you what you do. I'm not asking you to support me financially or by giving me money. All I ask is that you show this video to all of your friends who play starcraft and/or speak Chinese. I can pay my own way to Shanghai.

What is your "unique" contribution to the esports scene?
I speak Chinese, but I try to emphasize a Taiwanese accent, as I feel there is a lot more going in to the Taiwanese SC2 scene than the mainland Chinese scene, although BW is bigger in the latter of the two regions.

Do you have any casting experience?
Yes. I am currently a caster for the ASL. You can find out more about that tournament here.

What are you hoping to accomplish in Shanghai?
All I want is a platform to post and use my skillset. My major in university is Chinese. I want to know that my career line has something to do with what I am studying right now.

If that's the case, then why don't you just teach English in China when you graduate?
Honestly, I used to teach English in China when I was 19, when I spoke absolutely no Chinese. Anyone who looks like a foreigner can teach English in China, regardless of education level.

Will you be casting this event in Chinese or English?
For this event, English. I've already contacted people who have connections with the people who are in charge of the event in Shanghai. Most people who are not already famliar with both the Taiwanese and Chinese SC2 scenes will not be able to tell what I am talking about. Aside from that, I've already made a video, and posted it to youku and many people told me that my Chinese needs a lot more work. But for interviews, conversation, etc. my Chinese skills can cover that.

If you do go, who will be your co-caster?
I have no clue. I don't even know if anyone has been confirmed to cast this event in English.

How can I help?
Simple: show this to all of your friends. If this one video gets enough likes on youtube and enough viewers, then I will make another one in Chinese to show you guys what I am capable of. I already have some Chinese casts if you guys want, but I'll more than likely make another video and upload it to youku.com to give everyone a good look at my goals.

I hope you guys have found this blog, or this video blog, to be somewhat productive. This is my dream, albeit, somewhat naive of a dream, but a dream none-the-less.

Hey, let me preface this with the notion that I'm trying to be helpful here and not trying to be mean. First, the biggest problem I have with your post is the following:
What is your "unique" contribution to the esports scene?
I speak Chinese, but I try to emphasize a Taiwanese accent, as I feel there is a lot more going in to the Taiwanese SC2 scene than the mainland Chinese scene, although BW is bigger in the latter of the two regions.

Your unique contribution is that you speak Chinese? So do billions of other Chinese people. Slightly more clearly, your unique contribution is that you're white and you can speak Chinese. The first thing I noticed is that you didn't effectively convey to me why you're so special. What can you bring besides a white guy speaking Chinese? Or what are some advantages of this that aren't blatantly obvious?

And to be honest, just being white is kind of a novelty that will wear off after one cast. As this guy suggested, you should focus on being a good caster first (which is extremely hard since Chinese isn't your first language) and then use your white novelty to give yourself the extra boost. It doesn't work the other way around, where you people will hire you just because you're white and then you slowly build up your casting ability.

Also, you're really going through the wrong channels. The Chinese scene is extremely isolationist and i doubt anyone here has any meaningful connections to the scene there. You really have to talk to either Blizzard or, more likely, the Chinese organization who's running the finals. And btw, they most likely already have all the casters they need lined up.

But if you do manage to make it to Shanghai, I'll be looking forward to meeting you.

Tastless and artosis took the gig already. I got in touch with the community manager at blizzard of Taiwan.

Looks like I'm back to Sideshow Bob status -_-
