So these days I've been mass gaming with my clan and more than anything have been seeing a great increase in my skill level. Whenever I need to practice a build or need to practice against a certain strategy I would just msg them for a few games and usually I would get a good practice work out.

However I'm always into finding new friends and practice partners so I like to chat a little during games.
But of course I run into the "go" gamer.

Maybe I'm just quick to judge to think these people don't have a group of gamers they hang out with.
Maybe they just want to ladder and want to have a good practice and by me saying glhf I'm wasting their precious practice time.

Just wanted to ask are you a "go" gamer or a practice partner style gamer?

Poll: What kind of Practice gamer are you?

I wish I had friends to game with.. (24)

I just like to mass ladder and not care about making friends (12)

I like to create a good circle of friends in order to get the most out of practice sessions (8)

Having a group of players to play against is really handy.
You don't get as upset when losing compared to losing to strangers, and you can talk about the game afterwards.
For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?

I miss having 10+ online friends at any time of the day like in 2006
Now I just play a few games every week when I can find time.

I played with MVP[wOk] once and he seemed nice and played well, are all wOk guys the same? Because if they are, I want in. Friends are really handy though, I wish I had some.

I hate the "go" gamers as much as you do if not more though. The only 3 things I hate more in SC are people who change races last second, people who go with random and people who play protoss (in the order of #1, #2, #3). One of them lost a ZvZ going 12h 11p 10g speed first against the same thing from me with lair first, didn't attack before my speed finished. With a superior muta count of 5 to 1, I went into no-econ and won convincingly. And then this happens..

Me: You played pretty well, you could win by attacking right after your speed finished. Go re?
Him: STFU noob shit go fuck yourself

Duh.

If you have 1364 minerals saved up at that stage in the game you should probably practice your builds more against computers in single player rather than go online and get continually rolled by people who have been playing over a decade.

I'm actually the opposite. I really dislike playing with friends because I often take the game a bit too seriously so I'd prefer to just have a faceless enemy I can demonize in my mind. If I lose to a friend, I risk having to interact with them after the game and pretend I'm not mad when in reality I hate their guts.

Also, I despise people who try to talk to me in game. If I wanted to talk to people, I wouldn't be playing a 1v1 wargame where I'm trying to mercilessly crush my opponent.

i think you underestimate the concentration it takes to play bw. i HATE talking to people when i'm laddering. Most of the time i'll say absolutely nothing. the odd gg or go depending on my mood but honestly, when i'm playing bw i don't have mental capacity to have a chat about your day

Rule of thumb : If your opponent is from South America and trying to start a conversation, he's very likely 6pooling/proxy gating/bbsing you. If he's zerg he may be going for the Peruvian build, aka 9 hatch, 9 pool, 9 ovelord into 18/18 slow lings.

I'm a bit of both. With the help of sGs I found enough people to frequently practice and make friends with <3 Great for polishing out build orders or deflecting a certain strategy. But lately I realized I also need to ladder more because each time I go to ladder I'm facing a completely different style of play that I don't know how to adjust to. Gotta balance both. But only laddering seems a bit dull and grim, especially if you're a Dish player like me. Discussing strategies with friends after game is one of the most rewarding experiences as you can freely laugh at yourself instead of punching the keyboard in anger.
Overall I try to be friendly and if a ladder opponent wants to chat I'm fine with it. Not much so ingame though as I need to focus

I improved from being a relatively shitty 80APM D- Z to a D+/C- 180-200APM Z by mass gaming with friends. Way back when, a group of like eight of us or so ranging from D+ to C+ on op teamliquid would just sit around massing obs games for hours on end and taking breaks with team melee and UMS maps. I improved so quickly in so short a time there...

Then I burned out lol.

I like to play with friends, it's definitely the way to practice. That said, once the CSL switched to SC2 and I graduated, that was pretty much the end of my team days. I still laddered in BW, but I didn't really make any friends. I'm generally somewhat reluctant to add people because I play so inconsistently, that I'd feel bad adding someone and then disappearing for a few months.

Also, if you have group of players that can regularly play against each other, you can have like a round robin bo5s and make content off of it, which is quite fun actually.
Like this for example

Lol your posts are so funny. But also I dont know why you would want to make friends over ladder. I think channel is best place to do that.
Why would I play sctoo when I can play BW?

I improved from a D rank newbie terran to a D+ by constant laddering and getting tips from friends like fazek[42],black[cat],korean friends who help me out tinker my build order (I learn to be agressive because I imitated his style) and wok clan was helpful in my road to reach D+. Didn't regret at all because my time was well spent you can't beat this feeling that when you are on a roll and everything is running at full throttle and all systems are go you feel like you can take on the world . I miss broodwar a lot .......

I play with friends mostly but even in practice some of them prefer to just say "go" or instantly rehost between games, resulting in 0 discussion, which I feel isn't good for growth.

But Sayle, Rule #1 of your stream, "What would Day[9] do?" :O. In all seriousness, I would have never guessed that from your streams, you seemed so chill about losing lol.
