The coolest thing is that I see why there's the connection between Starcraft and Poker.
(Bear with me, that I'm bad at poker, and I don't really follow it...)
For the first time, really, ever, I played a game of poker with 6 of my friends. It was just for fun, of course, but there was some money on the line. 6 of us put in $5, and 1 put in $1 for a pot of $31, winner take all.
I knew the rules and stuff but I didn't know it'd be that fun. Sitting on a rectangular table, clockwise, I was at 6, to my left was P, then C, then A, then T, then K, then N, and back to me.
Everyone got their buyin in chips- white was $.05, blue $.25, and red $.50.
I don't know how to make this into a sick story so highlights
About 1/4 through the game, I hit 2 really big hands to take a big lead - the coolest part was my starcraft kicking in and saying "ok you're ahead, you don't need to play so aggressive," and I just chilled back.
The game was elimination though, so after I was the clear chip leader I started trying to kill off lower players. Unfortunately, I played too aggressive and started to lose my lead. It all went downhill on this one hand... 2 players had gone out, C, and T at this point, and me and P were doing a head to head. I had a Q and some random # card, and I had this feeling... I didn't wanna keep calling, as during the flop 3 of us were left in and one person folded after a raise, but there was something in me that said "keep going." being the dumb person I am, I decided , as the river was dealt, to fold. Community cards gave me a pair of Qs, but there was the potential for something..., he raised and I pussied out. I asked him after what he had, and he said "pair of 8s" and I started tilting because if I had played it right, and raised him to where he had to allin, I would have killed him.
After losing that hand, I tilted and just lost money randomly, and another player died to him, to where it was just me, P, and N to my right left.
I kinda recovered by this point, though, but P had a HUGE lead in chips, probably like $20/$31 and though I won some smaller hands I had a feeling after all 3 of us matched the big blind that I could eliminate N by folding my hand... so I did and traded my blind and got the person eliminated, lol. That felt pretty cool.
So faceoff between me and P, I moved over a seat so were were head to head. Unfortunately I had $7 to my name, and he had the remaining $25 at the start of the faceoff. I won some hands and got it to real close, like $16-$15 for him, and then...
I'm dealt an A/3, and I'm told later he had a J/Q. After the turn he raised to the point where I had to allin - I matched it. ALL. IN. If I learned anything from SC2 it was to always allin!
he was greedy, and had nothing. On the river, I pulled a 3, and when i showed my cards, BAM pair of 3s! Suddenly the score was $29-$2, advantage me. I guess he didn't think I'd continue the arms race.
Next hand, with his $2. I had A/#, the flop gave us a 4/4/Q, he goes allin. I say "ok lol" and matched him, the turn comes up gives me that second Ace, river comes up, he flips his J/Q and says "2pair," and I kinda just smile and flip over and say "2 pair ACE HIGH" and everyone started cheering and shit, "DAMNNNN"
COMEBACK COMPLETE, GG, we shook hands and...
shit poker makes you so nervous...its insane.
Afterwards I bought everyone Boba (bubble tea in some inferior places) with the winnings
also first thing i thought after i won was "lol i gotta post this on TL omg"
Sorry for a kinda not cohesive story but it was a lot of fun, especially for my first real game of poker. :D

hahahaha was this your guys' first game of poker (or one of the first)? Nice ^^
Fun stuff, playing poker can be really fun. It's a lot better when everyone is about the same level though otherwise some major rape could happen.
Yeah poker is like...fucking murican pasttime. It can be so fun playing with friends and whatnot just for shits and giggles.

Also is it empirical evidence that starcraft helps, that me and P both play?
All of us were about the same level though, the game was pretty even for the most part until some of us got good hands, and the lead switched a lot after I lost it.

Yeah starcraft deciding edge no doubt yo :D
When you're covered in bitches beautiful classy women and glory and you're a dominating poker master, I'll tell everyone that I knew, just KNEW jewelyet would be getting all dem jewels.
That's right: pokemon-->poker. Those stars are clearly uncrossed.

Fuck I miss poker so much. I loved playing on stars since I only get to play poker live once every few months :/.
But yeah poker is pretty nerve wracking sometimes . Grats!
|
I never got seriously into poker, but I do play every weekend with my bros (been doing it for close to a year straight now, lol). It's fun stuff.

You discovered the power of ace high in head's up ! Gratz Juliette =)
|
^^ thanks
i had a couple other good hands, including a full house to get the game almost even during the head to head, but man was i so nervous sometimes
its cool how you have this gamesense sometimes that tells you to play the hand out, or to fold immediately.
i really need to start a regular poker night when i get to uni

One of the psychological quirks pro poker players learn: If they're ahead, they're chill. If they're behind, they're desparate. I kinda laugh because you're like...'well I'm ahead, let's just keep it that way'.
Now, it depends on the player what that means precisely for their play. But usually, unless if people are drunk they usually are more conservative when ahead, more risk taking when behind.

At least you had fun huh, even though you sound like you got lucky a few times there hehe. Just don't get involved in higher stakes game untill you have an idea of what you're doing (no offense of course). a 20$ buy in game can easily escalate to a ~400$ pot by the end of the night (8-9 players), and you can lose 100$ easily, i know cause me and my friends play 2-3 times every week.

The only similarity between poker and Starcraft 2 is that there is a large degree of luck in any given match

Actually, when you are far ahead in poker (like 3+ times the stake of the runner-up), it is advised to play rather aggressively, i.e. to limp in a lot of pots and try to catch someone off-guard by making expensive calls.
The biggest difference in Starcraft and Poker is that in Poker you always play your opponents first, and your own hand second, while in Starcraft your own mechanics determine how much strategy you can put into your play.

Actually that's not generally the correct way to play poker. Maybe you can apply "When ahead, get more ahead." In general if you have the best hand you want to keep putting money into the pot so you make more money from your strong hands.
Poker is a really fun game though, I started on Stars about 8 months ago and just recently started to get into it a lot more, I think I've played about twice as many hands in the last 2 weeks than I have in the entire rest of the time I've had an account on Stars.
Its a lot harder for you being in the US, but if you enjoy poker you should do some reading, you'll find that a lot of the plays that will be against your instinct when you start are in fact very effective, and keep playing home games with friends.
Also don't try to copy the pros on TV ^_^, I used to play my worst poker after I'd watched Tom Dwan play because I'm not as smart as him, and my opponents definitely aren't as smart as his opponents.

All sorts of this backed up with some more of this.

I've had some crazy poker games. 1 game, there were 4 consecutive cards of the same suit on the community cards.. It was a game of chicken to see who could have a straight flush. Turns out both ends of the straight were held by different players.. The other time was when the community cards had a 4-of-a-kind. Would have been a draw, but I scared off everyone else during betting after the turn =/

Thanks for the advice ^^
I don't plan on gambling much money though :p. Gambling isn't for me, its more for the fun, especially since I'm moving in a few days so this time it was to spend what time I could with friends.

There's only a large degree of luck in amateur games where everyone bets until the river 'cause they're only playing for a couple bucks.

I once went to a DirecTV conference with my dad and the last night they had a 70's Casino night at the Georgia dome.
Of course, it wasn't 'real' money, but the more chips you had by the end, the more raffle tickets you got (and some of the prizes were worth over $1000), so you couldn't just play blindly.
I started with 3000, ended the night with almost 18000 after going down to my last 500 due to being very aggressive. Nobody wanted to go in with me, and I bullied most people out before the river card.
In both Starcraft and Poker, controlling your emotions and not tilting is half the fight. The mathematics of probability should be the last thing you learn in poker, I feel.
I won $1000 visa pre-paid card.

Great read, 5/5 :D
The chills you feel with poker is just unbearable. I don't even know how pros control that shit.
I was on vacation in Ukraine about two years ago, my cousin and I went to a local poker game w/ 7-8 people and decided to split whatever winnings we got. We walked in w/ 5 euros each, I came out with 16 and he got 11.
I have to disagree w/ jpak's comment though, at least to some extent. In poker your emotions are the telling factor so they give you away all the time if good players pick up on it, but in SC I've felt that emotion and adrenaline work hand in hand to speed me up and make me a more confident player, especially with micro.

I kept playing odds for straights... Id have 3 or 4 for the flop an pray lol
