Preamble: This isn't a review. It doesn't contain critical analysis, just the subjective opinions of one person. The intent is to remember the games I've come across in my life and share the nostalgia, nothing more. And some of those games I didn't play in great depth

Ricochet

Developer: Valve
Platform: PC (as a mod for Half-Life).
Release Year: 2000
Stephen's Rating: 7/10

Ricochet is an arena/action/duel/sport game created as an official modification of Half-Life.

Basic Plot

There is no story, and the setting is some kind of futuristic sports arena with neon coloured platforms.

Gameplay

The game involves traveling from platform to platform using a series of "jumps" which boost you to a pre-determined platform elsewhere on the level. The player cannot jump without the aid of these.

Here you can see the enemy player up close. You are standing on a neon platform, and the yellow arrow is a "jump" which will catapault you to another platform.

The objective of the game is either to knock your opponent off the platforms into the abyss below, or to slice their head off. You do this by throwing glowing discs at each other. There are two kinds of discs; ones that knocks the other player back, and ones that slices them in half.

You can get upgrades to your attack including triple shot and freeze shot. Frozen players are instantly shattered if they get hit by another disc. Strategy involves knowing the maps well and changing positions to keep your opponent off guard so you can get a clear shot. You can also bounce your discs off walls if there are any.

You can just make out the blue stream of a disc being fired at an enemy player.

Positives

The simplicity is refreshing. It's a fantastic and competitive game if you want a burst of action without committing to anything long term.

Negatives

There were not many levels to pick from and my interest in the game would never last a very long time.

Memorable Moments

I had a lot of fun with this game while flatting at university. There was much yelling and shouting across the flat as we destroyed each other in duels.

But I'm off creep... and so I slow down, what are hellions doing here? I don't belong here...

Just want to say: This game was great, and gave fun, but couldn´t be played over moderation, as it dropped off easily then.

Had a long period where I played this and day of defeat everyday

I played a LOT of CS as well on the internet. My entire third year of university involved 4+ hours a day of Counter-Strike and I have no idea how I passed my exams but I did. I never got into LAN tournaments or competitions but at my peak I would confidently top every map I played. Loved the AK-47 so much once I got the recoil sorted.

I probably have 1.5k+ hours in CS 1.6 (and older)... Ricochet was definitely a fun little escape from CS I loved how fast paced it was. Such a good mod :D The different powerups and stuff were a nice touch...

I was always more of an M4 fan myself... but I did use the scout a lot. I've always been a huge deagle+scout fan, though on some maps I would deagle + MP5 and main the deagle... just use the MP5 as a backup ;D I loved playing on cs_assault, especially as a CT... Everybody says that the map is imba for Ts... but if you work together as CTs you just wreck face haha.

I'm working on it Pretty hard to fit that in with work and baby and playing Starcraft and making Youtube content with Viva la Dirt League, but it's on the agenda. Basically I have a backlog of material I wrote last year, and I admit it's quite brief, but as I work through it and release it the write-ups will begin to grow in terms of the detail I go into. I just wrote a wall of words for Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift but based on the backlog of material I want to get through first that won't be released for a few months. I've covered 141 games so far and have a list of 110 or so left to go.

That is, I've pre-written 141 so far but not released them all on Team Liquid

I remember palying this at LANs over and over again. I agree that after a couple hours it lost its magic but after several months/weeks it was fun again at the next LAN.
