I want to think out loud some. Maybe talk to myself a little. Writing this all down keeps me from repeating things I think about. I heard of this cool little experiment, where you are supposed to give advice to your unborn child as if you would be dead by the time they are born, and they would be reading it when they turn 18. It's supposed to help you come to a greater understanding of your own personal beliefs and opinions, and thus yourself. Of course I don't actually have an unborn child, but I decided to give it a go anyways. Here is what I got:
No one ever accomplished anything by setting low goals. In your life, you will be told to set goals at a reasonable level, something which is easily obtainable, they may call it tangible. That's crap. The guy standing atop a mountain didn't get there by telling himself his goal was to stand at base camp. Never let them hold you down, as they have held so many others.
Someday you're going to fall in love. Love is for suckers. It convinces you to do things that are not within your nature. It makes you give things up and expect nothing in return. Worst of all, it never ends well. You never find love, or you break up, or you die. But I still believe in it. It's illogical, it's irrational, it's stupid, and I want it. And you should too.
If you happen to be a girl or a minority, I'm sorry about the way people treat you. If you don't understand why I'm apologizing, then I guess the world is a better place for you than it was for me. Be thankful if that is true.
If you're a male or white, remember that your female and minority counterparts aren't different. They're not better. They're not worse. They're not even equal. They're just people. There's no need to classify them. There's no need to quantify them. There's no need to qualify them.
Everything you know, and everything you will ever know is a result of the free exchange of information. Never let that go. Never let anyone censor you. Never let anyone silence you. Never let anyone take away or restrict books, or the internet, or your right to assemble with like minded individuals. Protect the free exchange of information above all else. Your religion, if you have any, your beliefs, your opinions, your existence, your everything is the result of this exchange. It is your charge to allow all those who come after you to have these same opportunities. When you take away the free exchange of information, you create slaves. Die for this cause if you must; I would.
Marx is right, Rousseau isn't so bad, Hobbes is the enemy, Locke has some good ideas, Friedman deserved his death, Nietzsche is interesting, Socrates is amazing, Plato is boring and often wrong.
Learn about computers. Don't just use them. They are so useful. They are the ultimate tools in experienced and educated hands. With them, and enough time, the human race can accomplish anything.
Never forsake the arts. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am that when I see a painting, or when I hear a song, it's just worthless information to me. Don't become like me in this regard. Love music. Love art. Appreciate the subtlety of design, and the complexity of intent. Learn to dance, and to sing, and to draw, and to think with your heart, and never let anyone tell you that the way you do it is wrong. I don't care if you're strumming on a guitar with a drumstick instead of a pick, as long as its wholly you, it is perfect.
Never forsake science. People will tell you that it's dangerous. That it's against God. People will find any reason to express their fear of it, or their hatred for it. But what they really are expressing is their fears and hatreds of the unknown. Science is all about discovering the unknown. Diving headlong into it, and experimenting with it. Toying with it, for the good of all mankind. Without science, you wouldn't be reading this. You wouldn't exist, most likely. Cars, TV, music, literally everything human is the result of science.
I'm hoping that by the time you're reading this you've experienced neither love nor sex. You will believe you've experienced love. But I hope that you don't know the first thing about it. Not because I want to deprive you of these things, but only because you can't understand them yet. You need to learn about your own life first, and then learn about social life, and then you can start learning about these things. While I'm sure you believe this has all happened already, you've only begun to learn about them. You'll be in your early to mid twenties before you understand yourself. And it'll be a while after that before you understand everyone else too. I hope when these things do come to pass, you fall in love and then have sex. It is my belief that the order is important. Not because any god commands it, and I don't have a scientific explanation either. But I know what love feels like, and I know what sex feels like, and I know that the combination of these feelings will be better than sex at 14 could ever be.
There will be a time in your life when your own life or the lives of others will depend upon emergency medical treatment or perhaps even combat effectiveness and basic survival skills. I want you to learn these things too. But never abuse them.
Make friends with people who are drastically different than you. Don't fear their differences. Fear similiarities. You have so much to learn from differences, while similarities afford you only the chance to study yourself. You should learn about yourself from yourself, not people who are kind of like you.
You are not an individual. You are not special. You are not unique. You accomplish nothing on your own. You can understand these words because people came together and invented language. You disagree with me when I say you're not an individual because billions of people came together and decided as a collective that being an individual was a good thing. Even your private thoughts and feelings are subject to societal influence. Everything you do is only possible because every person who has ever lived has paved the way for your actions. Earn that. Never forget you owe the world a debt. Find a way to pay it back.
Tea will never taste as good as coffee. It's not even worth spending money on. Seriously, don't bother.
Don't spend so much effort on trying to classify yourself. These days we have everyone from Emos, chronically sad people who wear all black and profess their desire for death to everyone, to Hipsters, people who pretend they're special and superior to everyone while wearing odd clothes. Don't fall into a category. Just be you. Don't try so hard to fit in. You be you, and the people who like you for you will show up soon enough. It is better to have 5 people with whom you can be yourself than 5,000,000 with whom you can be anyone else.
Enjoy comedy. laugh at everything. My favorite television shows are Scrubs and Futurama, because they integrate hard hitting emotion and silly comedy in a way like no one else can.
Don't do drugs. It's stupid. You're giving up your abilities to think and feel what you truly can, and limiting yourself below 100%, all for the sake of temporary pleasure. It's not worth it, not at all. Maybe if you were a lesser creature, but you're a human, a person, you can control yourself. If you can't, it is likely you are addicted, if not physically, then psychologically. If that's the case, please seek help child. You can do better than that. This includes abusing prescription medications, and cigarettes, and alcohol.
I liked this.. some of these points would be pretty important to instill in a child of your own some day. Of course, as you stated, you don't have a child yet--so writing this out is surely a good way to recall and re-found your stance on everything.
I will say that the last few points seemed a little more forced than the others, like the Tea and Coffee thing. Tea is actually really good for your body, lol. Coffee is a drug, technically, and gets you addicted to caffeine. I can see the humor behind this one though
The part about being an individual seems clear to me, but I think that it's vague to someone with little philosophical or free thinking background. Especially since our mind and our culture wants to tell us to be ourselves and follow our dreams, it takes some serious thought to understand that underneath all of that we are truly part of one collective group.
Also, the part about the "emos" and "death people?" is a little abrasive in my opinion and kind of shows a bit of ego and bias on your end because lots of these people don't always try to be someone else, and for some people looking in the mirror and gazing past just flesh and bone is not easy to do. Besides those couple of sentences with the classifications and examples, the rest of the point is pretty dead on.
The point about comedy seemed like an afterthought. I think you can develop this more, and get rid of the examples of shows, but focus more on why it's important to enjoy comedy and why it's important to laugh more.
Again, this is very interesting.. and sorry if my critique is unfounded, because after all, this is just a blog and just a way for you to write some stuff down for yourself-- I just think that as far as the writing goes it could be a little better as well as be a source of inspiration for others.

That's all fair, I think. I guess one thing I didn't do was try to read this from the point of view of the hypothetical child. I make a lot of assumptions about their position in life, and their knowledge of worldly events, and I think a senior in high school really wouldn't fit into those assumptions well.
As for the coffee part, that was written exclusively for my benefit, I actually planned to remove it from the finished product, but I completely forgot. lol. I was sucking on some flavorless herbal tea while writing this. I much prefer the darker/bolder stuff.
I included the names of television shows because they are and will likely be infinitely accessible. I would honestly love for my child to go watch every episode of Scrubs. Every episode has a little life lesson in it, and I'm sure this sounds so cheesy, but they're really good lessons. I think everyone should watch the show. I've learned a lot about my own relationships with people from watching Scrubs. As for Futurama, it's just a good show. It provides a lot of good comedy, while also throwing the occasional didactic curve ball at the viewer.
The whole emos/hipsters thing was more hastily thrown together than abrasive (though it served the latter purpose). I probably should have thought it out better, and approached it less harshly.
I guess if I was truly writing this to my unborn child, it would look a lot more like a book than an outline. One part novel, one part textbook, I suppose. Team Liquid has never done anything to deserve the torment of a book length blog from me, lol.
Why do people say "do drugs" ? It sounds very incorrec and weird to me. Also, since you seem to be into philosophy, do you have an opinion on Confucius ?

Double whammy: Confucius say: man who stand on toilet is high on pot.
"Don't do drugs" is a colloquialism for "don't use drugs" in the general sense. It is accepted and understood the same as "don't do [that]". Evolution of language doesn't always do us favors. Don't smoke pot. Don't drink alcohol. Don't shoot heroine. Don't snort coke. Somehow we wrapped all the different kinds of actions performed in using drugs into the word "do".

I am in fact studying to become a biological researcher.
Your list shows that maybe you could open your heart more. Perhaps you are a young fellow and certain experiences that might happen haven't had time to happen yet.... What is this about "emos" and "hipsters"
Your bit on "drugs" (not sure which you refer to, but i assume you mean anything that is illegal) feels very ..... uninformed. Especially since you appear to be a coffee drinker. Caffeine _is_ a mind altering stimulant.
I dig your idea, but I hope for your heart you open up a bit. Your ideas of "we are all just people" seem to conflict with some of your statements. This is the nature of the journey though.

I believe the overburdening attempt of trying to identify with some group of people, or trying to be like no one at all, is a direct result of the demand for people to be "individuals". To try to be something special compared to everyone who is not like that group. It just rubs me the wrong way. I'd rather everyone just be themselves, while acknowledging they need others. If that makes sense.
As for the caffeine bit.. Damned near everything you take into your body is some form of drug. Anything which isn't, you take in because your brain offers you chemical rewards for doing so (like how you feel better after eating or having sex). Life is a balance of drugs, you could say. It's when you abuse these things that is bad. Obviously some things shouldn't be done, period. PCP and Heroin would make that list.
I believe caffeine is okay for occasional use. You can drink a glass of wine now and then. You can smoke a cigar when your son is born. You can take pain killers if they're needed and prescribed by a medical professional. In just the same way testosterone is a good and healthy chemical in your body, it suddenly becomes using drugs when you put it into a needle and inject it into your veins. There's a line, I suppose. Maybe it's not clear where that line is, maybe it's circumstantial. I guess I haven't went out and tried to solve this for myself quite yet. But at the very least, I wouldn't want my child abusing any drug, caffeine included.
But I'm trying to be more "open". I am a lot better about things than I used to be. I still approach things very.. bluntly. Scientifically, almost. I'm very hard on things I disagree with. And this conversation has given me the chance to observe that behavior, so I can work on changing it later. So thanks.
We are all learning. I try to remember that we all have difference experiences, and bar none, experiences teach us the most, because they have a direct personal unspoken connection to us.
If someone is happy drinking 8 coffees a day, into furry porn, whatever whatever, you know that's their bag.
