Hello there. I am a platinum zerg player since Season 1. I have been in diamond before and I am currently at a low diamond MMR (check this thread if you don't know how to know where are you MMR-wise: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=334561 ).
I play somewhat casually, but this is my favorite game by far, it's almost the only game I play, but still I don't play it that much for several reasons, first being that I know I don't have what it takes to be a pro, so I (try to) not bother with getting higher and higher in the league (as the effort and time it would take would just increase exponentially), playing at high plat/low dia is really fun for me. However, the last weeks I have been facing 50% zergs and 50% protoss only.
Problem is I am that kind of guy that always cheer for the minorities. I choose zerg because it was the most difficult, least played race and right now my brain is yelling at me that I "need" to race switch!
I will change races to terran today, ZvZ and ZvP all week is getting me bored. I might actually play random at the beta and just go back to zerg on release (after I complete the campaign on brutal), I still love zergs, but it just not fun anymore at the current ladder, thanks terrans =(
Anyway, I am actually hoping my terran skills will be top bronze/low silver, so I can get some numbers from there for the MMR project. Wish I had saved one of my accounts with fresh MMR for now, but I had no idea I'd be bored with zerg so suddenly.
I will change my battle.net avatar today and start playing the terran campaign on brutal to prepare to what it will come.
So, my current plans, finally play and finish the campaign on brutal, then play terran on ladder till the beta HotS arrives, then play random there... then we will see 
Edit: Ok, I played 5 games now, 4 were TvT, the system must do that on purpose, I was getting less than 10% of terrans, that's stupid >.>
Edit2: 5 tvt in a row...
Edit3: zomg, it feels like blizzard has disabled ZvT/TvZ on the ladder, but the players are actually there, I am getting several terrans and protoss, no zerg, stupid coincidence? o.o

terran units are the most fun to control. specifically i love how vikings and helions handle.

I started with random in the beta, and switched to Zerg and Toss at various points in my sc2 history but have settled on Random once again. And it's for many of the reasons you outlined.
To me sc2 is a game. And like most games I play it for enjoyment. To me, random yields the most enjoyment. I enjoy trying new strategies and experiencing each matchup. Random keeps things from getting monotonous so I will keep playing and enjoy myself.

I did tried random before picking zerg actually, but at the time (2010) I was too much of a noob and it was frustrating wanting to do the stuff I saw pros doing and not being able to do half of it, specially with zerg, zerg was my worse race and every time I did random as zerg it felt I was done already. I actually reached platinum with random, mainly with terran + protoss 1 base all ins =3
That's one of the reasons I focused on zergs, I wanted to see how far I could go with enough practice on one race, but right now, this reason doesn't exist anymore, there are new motivations now and one of them is preparing to HotS. In my mind, HotS will be ready soon and I should focus on the new toys.
So, first, I do want to play the campaign, WoL on brutal and that's terran focused, so I guess I will take the time and practice what it is to macro and micro them and as for a "campaign continuation" I will ladder with them till the beta starts.
Then with some terran and zerg skills I hope I can random there in the beta and keep the games fun enough. Every race seems pretty cool to me and it would be a waste to not try every single one of them once again, so I am already happy with my "strategy", can't wait for beta!

When you get a tvz, 2base battlecruiser attack with 8my or so bc's is awesome if z doesnt scout it :D
