So today I start what should be the first major change in my life. I am going to be running at least 2 miles a day and going to be changing up my diet. This is all in preparation to hopefully join the US army. I had planned on joining about 5 months ago but due to a surgery, I couldn't really prepare physically for what was ahead. So I am now currently getting back into shape and trying to lose a couple more pounds.
Back at the first time I was going to join the army I was at about 215 pounds. So be able to join the army you have to be under a certain percent of body fat. They calculate your body fat by measuring your waist and neck. At the time all I needed to do was lose about 3 inches off of my waist and I was set to go. I was well on my way to doing that when I suddenly got appendicitis. I had to get my appendix removed and that set my back for about 3 months.
I now weigh 185 and am looking to get down to about 170 before going back to the army recruiter and resuming what I started. I think I would be under the body fat percentage but I am looking to be in better physical condition before I commit myself to something so huge. I was looking at the schedule of boot camp and what they do for the 3 months and you have to be able to run a mile in under 8 mins 30 seconds. I know that is not fast at all but at the current physical shape I am at that would be probably the fastest mile I could run.
I am really excited to be getting back in shape and to especially a change up my current schedule. Right now my day consists of playing Starcraft 2 and then whenever I get bored of laddering I switch to League of Legends. I occasionally hang out with friends and LAN at their places. On Fridays and weekends I usually go out to the clubs in San Francisco to take pictures for two clubs where I hold a photography residency. I will be documenting my changes and seeing where a month of working out and dieting will take me.
If anyone has any tips, first hand experience in the army , or any advice at all please fell free to share it.

i am just curious, but why do you want to join the army?

It has always been one of my ambitions to join the us army. I am currently attending community college ad am a pre-med major. Whilst in the army I could continue on with my college studies and also earn a decent salary. Plus one of the biggest things about it is I could also get hands on training for my pre-med studies. I am looking to become a combat medic so that would help me immensely in the future with my medical training.

Seriously I would work on upper body strength more than running. Running a mile in under 8:30 is pretty easy as I managed to go from 9:47 to 7:53 in a trimester (only jogging .5mile a day and 1.2 on Fridays in PE), so the mile is not a problem. Working on your core and upper body strength will benefit you a lot more then being able to run the mile fast.

My upper body strength is at an ok level right now. I wrestled, played football, and was on a weightlifting team in high school. I still continued to lift weights after high school. So my upper body is pretty developed. I can currently max on bench press at about 265 and max on squat at 345. I mean it isn't that amazing and can be improved but I am looking to improve on my cardio more than anything else.

you gotta take it slow with running. your body has to get used to it first. run for no longer than 30minutes, like 2-3 times a week for a start and let your body regenerate.

yea I had my appendectomy back in Jan and was fully recovered at around early Feb. I have always been able to bench around 180 and after weightlifting and playing sports which depended on a lot of upper body strength I was able to better that to what I am at now.

Bah appendicitis. Had it some months ago. Went into hospital thursday night, got released from hospital saturday noon. Obviously no workout/carrying heavy stuff for some weeks. edit: but it hurt like fuck

At first I just thought it was constipation and then It continued. It went to the point where I couldn't walk because of the horrid pain So I decided to go to the hospital to see what was wrong and alas I had appendicitis.
