Hey guys. I need a laptop, but I'm incredibly poor. 400 is probably as high as I can go, but I'd prefer it to be around 300ish. I'd like a 13 inch, but I suppose 14 or 15 inch are acceptable as long as they don't weigh a ton. I'll be using it primarily for typing documents, checking email, and browsing forums. Maybe watching youtube videos once in a while. I really do not like netbook keyboards, so please don't recommend that. Currently I've laid out 3 options. 1. Go to local computer store and buy cheapest possible refurbished computer. This will cost 350-375ish. Will probably either come with a pentium, celeron, or e450, and will be a 15 inch computer.
2. Buy a crappy random atom powered laptop from chinese website. Powered by an atom, 2gb ram, etc. Very slow, but maybe sufficient? Something like this:http://www.dhgate.com/13-quot-notebook-intel-n570-dual-core-bt/p-ff80808132a374110132a3dd133958b9.html?recinfo=8,1,2
3. Fix an unused thinkpad T43p. Crappy pentium M cpu, 128mb ram, broken hdd. I will probably upgrade it to 2gb ram and put in a cheap ssd.
So, what do you guys think will give the most satisfactory result, and which path would result in the best value?

Don't know why you think you need to buy a crappy Chinese PC if you live in the states. Go to www.bestbuy.com they have 15.6 inch toshibas for $299.99 which will be more than sufficient for what you're looking to do, if you need it to play starcraft...that's a whole different matter.
Also, this belongs in Tech support.

Yeah man, $400 for what you need is quite a bit. You could get a new one with at least one year warranty so don't settle for a re-furb or something too cheap unless you need to stay under $300.

Are you sure you cant do a desktop instead?

$400 is quite a bit these days. You can get pretty good bang for your buck. Why do you need a laptop over a desktop?
|
I'm assuming you're in college or something and a desktop really isn't a good option for that. I'd just go to newegg.com and see what refurbished laptops they have there.

Funny how in pretty much every thread where someone asks for laptop advice people are wondering why a person would want a laptop over a desktop.
