I wake up feeling something is very wrong. Its dark and the room and all I can hear is this terrible sound as if a big truck is driving by me. The next second I realise my bed is shaking and my brain starts working at 1000000%. Earthquake is my first thought, I jump out of bed and turn on the light. Everything around me is shaking and cracking. At this moment the panic takes over me and I freeze. I`m at the 5th floor and there is now way I can get out in time. I realize I should do something, grab my phone, my watch and a bottle of mineral water and go under the frame of the door. The feeling where you wait to end and there is nothing you can do is undescribable. Then its over. All this in 33 seconds according to the official reports, but it seemed like 5 hours to me ^_^. Its exactly 3 a.m.
I`ve had my share of earthquakes, but this one was incredibly strong and nothing like I`ve felt before. It turned out that 5.8 had hit Sofia and nearby cities. I thought there would be significant damage, but there was no damage and noone was hurt. Luckily my parents are geophysicists and I know quite a bit about earthquakes so the aftershocks didnt scared me at all.
This definately was one of the most terrifiying experiences in my life and I`ll always remember it.

As long as you can stand its usually ok. The real danger is having big shelves and other heavy furniture etc falling over on you.
Where do you live ?

Bulgaria yeh? I was just reading about that, glad you are safe

Glad you are ok, been in a similar case a few years ago. I still remember it like it yesterday.
I had just woken up, walked into the kitchen, started boiling water for coffee, let the dog out and while waiting for water to finish boiling, the birds outside started flying around and making noise; my dog ran to the end of his leash, choking himself. The ground started to shake, I thought it was my furnace as first. But then it intensified, thinking it was a dump truck driving, then the shakes grew even more stronger, that's when I knew it was a earthquake. Lasted about 30 seconds or so. I wasn't scared, as I was already on my back deck, but I was sure confused, since I had just woken up.
