it's hard to think of myself as an old timer. im only 21 but in terms of being a web user i'm probably in the second or so generation of people to use what i would call the modern web. growing up infront of a PC screen was something strange 6/7 years ago but today is considered more normal. ive felt some nostalgia for some time now about 'the good old days' but ive always found it difficult to articulate what i hate so much about facebook, facebook feeds and all that stuff, but love about 4chan and other less well known forums which are renowned for being cesspools of the internet. so once again ive had to wait for chris pool aka moot to do the talking for me. here he gives a great talk about what it is to be a part of something, something tiny and niche but really special to you on the internet, why that felt so good and why 9gag is so fucking annoying.

this is the kind of stuff i wish we had more content about. when people think of internet culture, they think of swearing and claims to have had sex with someones mother while playing halo. but internet culture is so much more than that; being able to find people to chat to about anything and connecting yourself to your interests is so empowering.

for mootykins talking about more serious business to do with just general stuff its only a google search away but i thought these videos were worth sharing with both people who have been around longer than me and with people who are more new to the internet. enjoy.

If you consider yourself an old timer at 6 years o' web use then im practically ancient.

I also do not agree with your sentiment but opinions are opinions

-on tumblr: i hate how all the meme shit is spread out and overused by people, and then it spreads to real life... i appreciate the website: i use it for blogging too, reblogging nice pictures, kpop, etc, but the meme shit has gone too far -____-

-on growing up on forums: i did, and i still keep up with friends i made on them. one of them suggested I apply to the college i'm attending in the fall, in fact. i mean i wouldnt say im an 'old timer' in the grand scheme of things, but withing my little sphere and the websites i frequent, im definitely a veteran. TL excluded...

-on creation of memes: even the word meme is twisted. i didnt even think about the fact that those stories that made going to a forum worthwhile were memes.

i skipped the q/a

overall i really agree with you, and i agree with moot here. thanks for bringing it up

OKAY FROM THAT PERSPECTIVE I SEE WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT

The internet was better before people called things memes. At least then, the obvious and incessant repetition of the same content wasn't so obvious and thus didn't feel incessant.

I've always been pretty annoyed by the way that the word "meme" has come to mean shitty images copied again and again.
When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive - to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.

There was a pic in my newspaper of a guy holding a sigh with Rick Perry on it and it said. "The derp is strong with this one." Made me laugh a little bit.

People not knowing how to pronounce 'meme' correctly is almost as funny as those who make frequent reference to them IRL.

The days when the dancing baby gif was just the dancing baby and no one made gif sounds, or added random text to it.

Those were good days, I laughed and enjoyed that gif so much.

Also, when Numa Numa first showed up on newgrounds and was a compressed flash video presentation not in youtube. Crazy crazy memories.

Memes are for children to enjoy and for adults to ignore.

Oh how I remember this. I mean, how did such things spread around the world without reddit or any meme-sites? I got Internet access in 1997, after begging my parents to get it because it would be "so useful" (though from today's point of view, I can't really recall any then valid arguments in support of that claim). Basically all you did then was hop into any chatroom and try to flirt, or use fireball / yahoo to find useful stuff to save time when doing homework.

I agree on the matter that repetitiveness is really tiring from time to time. How many times have you seen *les ragefaces* doing the same stuff over and over...

But still, creativity leads to new "memes" all the time. So while repetition indeed is boring, just because it's now called "memes" doesn't eliminate all original content.

I come to think that the old stuff may also seem more creative because there just wasn't an abundance of it.
