So, I just watched the end of the most recent season of Doctor Who.
I got into the show rather recently, around a year ago, and started with the new stuff.
SPOILERS FOLLOW THIS LINE IF YOU HAVE NOT WATCHED IT AND DO NOT WANT SPOILERS ABANDON READING HERE.
So, I thought this season really lacked "cohesion" in some of the episodes. In particular, The God Complex (the one in the creepy hotel/prison). Also, I felt it was missing that "epic" feeling some of the other seasons brought.
Otherwise, it was a very good season with a very clever, if predictable, ending.
I think if you didn't see the fake death stunt with the Tesselator coming I think you need a new show to watch.
I still really miss Rose though, she was far and away my favorite "companion"
Anyway, just wanted to spill something about it because I just watched it and my girlfriend doesn't like Doctor Who so she won't listen to me talk about it.

I'm thinking about getting into Doctor Who eventually when I have time. How would you recommend getting into the series? My friends recommend that I start with the 9th doctor.

1st to 8th doctor is ages old black and white material, partly forever lost due to bbc tape erasing at some point iirc. So you're probably best off starting at 9th from 2005, the beginning of the series reboot.

Yes the modern Dr Whos are a slightly different beast than the classic ones. You have to realise that Dr Who isn't a gritty drama, it's more like action/adventure, so you can watch the program knowing that everything is going to be OK in the end. Historically the episodes were stand alone adventures, so the fact that there is a loosely connected thread between the episodes in the modern series is a kind of half-hearted attempt. It's so you can watch any episode even if you have missed the previous ones.

"SPOILERS" (like River Song)
+ Show Spoiler +This one is a much more personal season with the companian having a boyfriend and they having a time lord child who marries the doctor. It's mainly about their love lives and emotions which makes it much more relatable and moving.

I loved the first few episodes of series 6, but the second half was awful. First of all, the doctor changed a fixed point in time in the special "The Waters of Mars" and it didn't cause time to collide and the universe to start destroying itself. I could deal with this contradiction of canon if it happened in the 1970s, but this was like two seasons ago.
I have to admit I was caught a bit off gaurd by the using the tesselector to avoid dying thing, but the whole River song being their child was pretty obvious from the beginning of the season. Pretty unimaginative writing, uselessly complicated. Actually the last two seasons have been pretty unimaginative, how many times is he going to reset the universe? The only episodes I really liked were the ones with Craig, by far the best character they've created. But over all Matt Smith <<<<< David Tennent.
And I never liked Rose, for the 10th doctor Martha was way better, and wayyy hotter.
