Recently I've been doodling a lot in my sketchbook, doing a lot of pencil sketches, which aren't usually my thing, but are so much fun. I've been posting my day-to-day results over at http://ultimatehurl.tumblr.com, and even though I've nowhere near the skill of Glider I thought I'd challenge myself for a TL blogpost, to draw White-Ra.

This was based on a picture I took of White-Ra for TL during Dreamhack, and was a big challenge. I was also thinking, I usually paint, either digitally or with acrylics, would TL prefer streaming painting or Youtube videos after? Will be making the sort of things I've blogged previously

I know hes smiling but for some reason im getting sad from this pic. I think its the shadows on the left side and the eyes.
|
you have talent, but youre not glider^^
try to make it "cleaner", maybe by using finer lines or using a rubber to smudge the lines. Also, the eyebrowns could be darker. That would be my guess, not like im an artist or something :D like this, he looks a bit like he just got rescued from a burning car and lost his wife or something :/
|
ask glider for some advice ^^
|
lol yeah what they said. However, I like the look for him. Makes me think if I was him "am I really that old?!? O.O".

White-Ra's left, the artist's left, or your left?

White-Ra looks like he has a tumor (not a creep one hue hue hue) on his right jaw. I suggest making a much straighter line from the ear to his chin.
Other than that good job, better than what I can draw for sure XD.

need some work with the eyes ratio dude
|
Nice, sketch dude, Just gotta work on a few things ppl have been mentioning above and it'll look fantastic
|
I'm the furthest thing from an expert, but for someone who doesn't do them often, I think this looks great!
|
Looks good for a sketch! I'd suggest fading the shaded pencil lines with a finger to give it a more natural shadow. But since its just a sketch you don't really need to.

'Not bad' - Barack Obama

A good try my friend, but it needs work. You've got the start of a good drawing, just work it. You have establish your darks and lights. Right now there's not any real distinction between your lights and your middle tones. Either hit the darks way harder or incorporate some white pastel in for those highlights and leave the paper to act as your mid tone. As you've seen in Gliders pictures, he reworks his pieces to get that next level of finish and detail on his work.
Good stuff, you're going in the right direction.

I think this is common with a lot of my stuff, I'm self-taught so I rarely work to the level of pros, definitely working on this. I think it's the reason iamperfection sees a problem on his left-side, I wasn't clear enough with the shading on that jaw. Only have a HB pencil, thinking of investing in some charcoal to be able to smudge and that, has been a lot of fun to experiment! Thanks for the advice guys!

I actually feel like some of the "imperfections" make this portrait very intriguing, almost Van Gogh style. I like it. Some color to this portrait would also be interesting as well.
Good job nonetheless!

I like it a lot! You can see that he's deep in tought. A very striking drawing indeed.

Not bad.Pretty solid all around.
Becareful of the tendency to subconsciously straighten things out when you draw. Feels like certain parts are tilting one way (ear-to-ear, jaw, neck tilt) while the center features are being forced to align(looking head on). I have problems with this too esp with people whose features angle up and down, its easy to confuse the angles. Also the way the chin goes into the jaw on his right ( the dark side) seems like its missing some volume or something.

Bayyne, 3FFA I'm playing around with more impressionistic style too, just don't like it when it happens by mistake 3FFA I'm talking about the shaded side, which has problems because the shading was awkward due to a rim-light sort of lighting condition that I didn't render too well
Thanks GreatFall
ironchef yeah White-Ra was tilting his head, which introduced a few challenges I found really interesting to try and tackle
