Here are my initial thoughts from the first 10 minutes in this game; The first 3D Zelda game ever made and man did they do it right. The game looks damn good for the N64, the controls feel right, even on the 3 pronged controller. The action button along with Z-targetting were what made this game FEEL so fucking awesome. Being more complicated but feeling as simple as the older Zeldas. Also the ability to equip 3 items, makes a lot less time wasted switching back and forth and back and forth. Also, something I never paid attention to or noticed as a kid was the MUSIC. Its perfect, its an orchastra, arguably a change just as big as from 16 bit to 64 bit graphics. Man the music just is memorable, and gives you the feeling your supposed to get at every part of the game. Excitement/fear/sad ect.
Anyways lets add some extra nostalgia:
Zelda commercials were always so odd
I don't remember getting super hyped from the commercial, but from the edition of the Nintendo Power that had 200 screenshots. I read that magazine everyday. Waiting for this game to come out. I went to the local Jumbo video who had ordered probably 8 copies of the game in to rent it. All gone. I was devestated. So I reserved it and waited 3 days and got my copy for the weekend. Beat the deku tree and before I knew it I needed to wait till Christmas.
Luckily I think that was only a couple months away. Man oh man N64 games were expensive. Im pretty sure this game cost 99$ plus tax. Thats 120$. Thats when minimum wage was fucking like 5$ here. Thats 24 hours of work for a kid working at macdonalds to buy this game. But I was 8 when this came out, so I was completely depended on Christmas/Birthday/My 5$ a week allowance.
Anyways jump into the game. At first your like fuck, I have no sword or shield. Then you feel like a man after you crawl through the hole and find the sword, and then buy that shield with all dem rupees you stole out of that dickheads house. Yeaaaaah. Then your like talking tree wtf? Then a long ass story that you can't skip. Then your inside the tree. Which arguably is the best first dungeon in any zelda game. Argue with me if you want Im just saying it how I see it.
You can tell this tree is old because of his mustache and eyebrows are like grey
Then your in the tree, you get your slingshot you falllllllllllll way down through the spiderwebs. Those big spiders, were terrifying by the way. I think it was just how retarded there stare was I don't know. Then you use your sticks to light shit on fire and push some blocks and reflect with your shield. Like holy shit. Your learning new things in every single part of this dungeon.
Now come the boss Ghoma. Now if this is your first Zelda game in 3d and you played the other ones your like, ohhhh Ghoma. What a bitch. But I have no arrows for her eye wat do. You picture this:
Then you see this:
And your like:
Not only that, but at first you know your in the boss room and you see no boss. But then you see it on the ceiling. It was scary for me to do this at 8, it is scary for me to do this at 21. Fuck. The music is super intense, and this thing screeches at you. This boss battle is easy. Hardest part is not being scared shitless when its on the ceiling. This is how you expect bosses to be. Scary, intense, epic. The music helps alot with this.
You beat it, and save the tree you are so happy. The tree now tells you a story, (even if you say NO) and then dies. It is so sad and you are pissed at ganon already.
Fast -Forward. (Yeah games are longer, need these now) Your in the castle. Everyone remembers this part. As the This-is-fucking-so-boring-and-annoying. The longer you fail, the faster you try to go the more you fail. That whistle problems brings frustrating memories into your head. You basically sneak by some guards, Metal Gear Style and see the princess, get some more storyline, and meet ganon, who stares you down.
To Death Mountain. Grab your new shield, but your like fuck Im a pussy and cant even carry this. Meet the gorons, who are fucking so cool. I Get the bracelet for picking up bombs and head into the Dodongo caverns.
This place is hard, with 4 hearts like fuck. First you run around blowing up stuff with the flowers and your like I wish I had bombs then you get-em and your like yes Im amazing. The main reason this place is hard is those fucking lizards. They jump around, and you need Z targetting and shielding, and swording, and not falling into fucking lava. And there is two of them, and you fight them twice. Well fuck me. With 4 hearts.
Skip to 2 minutes if your memory is foggy or youve never played the game
Then your like aight. Im good, nothing can be worse then the lizards. You jump down a hole, and see the giant dodongo. From Links awakening these guys looked more like ball and chains with big smiles, in the original they looked like dinosaurs. In this one hes a million times bigger, and rolls around. Same concept though, eating bombs is generally bad for you.
Dodongo still dislikes smoke
And thats where Im at in this game.
Also:
Navi - FUCK YOU. HEY HEYHEYEHEYEHEYEHEY. Then you say something I already fucking know. Or something useless. I hate you. You should die in a fire.
Owl - King of trolls. Tells you huge long stories, and tries to confuse you by saying did you get all that? And puts No on top. Then next time says Do you want to hear it again? And puts Yes on top. At least hes fucking helpful flies you around and shit. At least his music was good too damn.
Overall Progress: Legend of Zelda (Completed) - 10 Hours Zelda 2: Adventure of Link (Completed) - 16.5 Hours Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - 8.75 Hours (Completed) Links Awakening - 10.5 Hours (Completed) Orcarina of Time - 3.0 Hours
Coming up Next: Hopefully some adult link, good friday might be a good day to play OoT.
^ I agree I would just close my eyes and run as fast as possible at that part. That scream scared me so much and taking away my ability to move. Gahhhh. Also the night time music, with the crazy ass wolves.
I still say in terms of a single player game Ocarina of time is the best game of all time. When it came out it was simply a blast to play and was one of the few games that i would replay several times.

And. This. Guy.
The creepy temple music... plus the looming sound of the Wallmaster... and then the fact that it's a huge freaky hand coming to engulf your entire body.
Lol I dont care what anyone calls them, they're The MasterHand or The Claw to me.

I have a question for everyone since were talking oot. Did anyone else find the water temple to be over rated in difficulty? When i beat the game for the first time i was only 10 and i dont remember the water temple being any harder than any of the other temples yet everyone seems to bitch about the water temple. I actually thought the final boss in the water temple the ameba eye thing was actually one of the easiest bosses.

The first time I played through the game, I actually did find the water temple to be insanely difficult to get through.
Every time after, it took me like five seconds to beat and I had no idea why I was so retarded the first time through. Hindsight (and replay value) is 20/20, when you know all the tricks (or have the player's guide )

This is a question Im looking to answer myself, I beat this game alot when I was 8-12. But never since. I always remember it as being the hardest temple in OoT but we will see if it lives up. (Nothing can live up I already beat Links Adventure) Also before I started replaying all of these, I was too stubborn (or stupid) to use the convienet dungeon maps/compasses. And always got pissed when I found them in chests.

Its just that the temple can be confusing as fuck if you miss anything.

In terms of Zelda games it is popular opinion that it might be the best one (I like LttP and MM better), but in terms of single player games overall? I'm very skeptical. In terms of translating the franchise to a 3D medium it was very successful, but Mario 64 was even more successful with this and actually holds up. In terms of story it is nothing but cliches, and most people can name a lot of games where the story actually was good (Eternal Darkness would be my go-to example). In terms of atmosphere... It doesn't really hold up. It is okay, but it's more nostalgia than anything. In terms of bosses and dungeon design it was okay I guess, but still follows that 'get key, now go over here' formula that is looked down upon by skilled developers these days.
It's somewhat a matter of opinion of course, but I can't name one facet (not even music ) nor combine them overall that I think is better than any other single player game.

Pretty much this. If you don't miss anything it's pretty orderly and simple. But miss anything and you have to mess around with all the water levels to finally find the one room you missed, and hope that the water is set at the right level for you to be able to complete it.
