The first one was a female cat. Stray but though as nails. After being around for about a few months she got pregnant and gave birth to four little cats. Two 'boys' and two 'girls'. One of the males, Henry Matisse, died when he still was one and a half years old. The other died after that in a territorial dispute with the bigger cats of the area. But the real treat were the females. Independent just like a cat should be. If there weren't any food around they would hunt down whatever crossed their paths: little lizards, birds, rats, crickets lol.... But they would be always around to receive the daily dose o petting (spelling?) and to try to sneak inside the house. Remember that they weren't allowed inside. One of them, Mona Lisa, was very persistent. She would seek a open window or door to sneak in and despite our efforts she was often seen laying in the couch, resting like a boss. She was also very adorable so everyone liked her the most. So when she entered in the house my parents would cut her some slack before putting her back outside. Life was good. She even gave birth to five kittens in one of my closet drawers. It was in the middle of the night when I start to hear some'Meeoowww's from the closet, followed by some higher pitch little meoows... That was funny lol Mona Lisa was a very good hunter. She always hunted food for her kittens. Sometimes she would bring food (read 'rodents') to our door step, like most of the cats do, right? There was a year that he had a rat infestation on the island (were I lived) and one morning there were SIX dead rats in our backyard. And I'm not talking about about those little mice you see people buying to feed snakes. I'm talking about big ass rats. The kind you see in horror movies climbing out toilets. My mom freaked out lol. In Fall we have hunting season. He have many rabbits and some wild birds that the locals like to hunt. They only allow hunting at Thursdays and Sundays and you can't go near residential areas. One of those Sundays I heard some shots nearer than usual and got a strange feeling right away. Something was wrong but I didn't know what. Mona Lisa, that would 'check-in' at least one time everyday (meal time ofc!) didn't show up that day. Neither the following two days. So I went to search her. There was a place near home were I used to play that had many trees, vinyards and vegetables planted. It had also a very wide and deep dry water reservoir. It had a 10 meters radius and one meter high stone wall. I went directly to it because the shots I heard earlier came from that area. When I arrive at the place and look down I saw Mona Lisa liyng dead in the center of the reservoir. The hunters, sons of bitches, shot my cat just for fun (she couldn't be mistaken with a rabbit) and throw her to the reservoir. I coudn't even go pick her to bury her decently because it was too deep. Everytime I went there I could see the time consume her until the grass in the bottom covered her bones. She was the best cat I had and gave me and my family many fun and tender moments. After all these years I remember how it feelt finding her there. So after all this rant I want you remember all the good times you spent with her and all the joy that one can only get if you own a cat.....yeah, you know what I'm talking.
