This is my first time writing a story in english because this shit is so sick. It was a day that I was still happy that I bought iPad2 thinking oh... I'm not gonna be bored in the plane... I was going to the airport with this happiness. Before I left I wrote down all the address and information on my ipad2 that i bought like 2days ago. Everything was just normal. Everything was going fine. Checked in got to the plane as usual.
Finally arrived in germany. I grabed a taxi, went to the address. When I arrived to the address that was given by manager. I was so confused if it was a correct address because it wasnt hotel unusually. It Looked like just medium size of house. There was no one in the front and the door was locked. So I thought I was at the wrong place thinking its either iem or my managers fault for giving me a wrong address. I was going to check what i wrote down on my ipad but i was busy watching movie on the air plane so the battery was gone.
It was about 2pm ish. I was hungry so I couldn't stand there forever hoping someone to appear. I waited there about an hour but no one came. So I decided to go to other building near around here. It was rural area there was nothing around the building except yards. Walking 10minutes with all my bags, there was an event building. I went in there and checked my phone, it showed there is wifi. I just had to get a password to access to it. Oh, I forgot to explain my situation. I had no service on my phone in Europe means no signal , no 3G . I missed Korean Internet technology, u can basically get any txt MSG wherever you are and you can register to 3G any time you want. It costs about 10bucks a day no limit.
Back to the story, I had to ask wifi password. So I went to the front desk and explained my situation but the guy couldn't speak English. So I said Internet please, wifi password please and he goes no Internet no no no. Even though I can see he is webserfing with his computer.. Rofl... And wifi signal. I sighed for a second and left the building. I was starving. Thank god I wasn't sleeping on the taxi, I remembered the way to the burger king. To go there I had to walk 15more minutes with those annoying heavy bags. If I had no stuff it would only take 10mins. I got to the burger king and ate some food. Afterward I explained my situation to the employee , fortunately she speaks little bit of English . However she said wait and explained my story to her manager but he couldn't speak English. The manager gave me a direction to the public telephone. I went there to call team boss Michael Odell since he was here for the event. However I was so stupid that I didn't know how to type + in the phone which is 00 ... So I couldn't make it.
Sigh it was about 4pm. I was thinking... Oh god wtf should I do????... And I thought that there is no choice except keep asking people how to call this number, and if I can use their phone. So I spoke to about 8 people. No one could help me. At the end , I saw some guys who were in the car at the parking lot. The car windows were open, and they were talking. I went up and explained my situation thank god he was ok ish in English just like me also looked like about the same age as me. But we failed to call the English number start with +4477 oh god I feel so stupid writing this story... Rofl.... So we were thinking what should I do. One of the guy who were sitting on passanger seat said there is a McDonald 10 mins away by car has a free wifi for 60 minutes. And the driver said I will give u a ride. I was so happy lol.. But he said he has to wait his sister. We waited like 5minutes, she got out of a bus and came.
So we were going to the McDonald, we were stopped at the light and there was a gas station right beside of the road. And suddenly the driver guy said look that's how much the gas cost 1 liter blahblah. I don't remember the exact amount. So I said oh sure I will pay u 5 euro no problem cheaper than a taxi lol. So we were both happy. He dropped me off at the McDonald. I went in, took out my laptop, tried to connect wifi but didn't work. Fortunately , my phone worked with wifi. But I had another big problem. I needed a pin number to get an access to the wifi. To get the pin number I needed a phone that can get a SMS. Since my phone doesn't work.... I had to ask for a favor again. I spoke to about 5 people, and finally the last guy was willing to help me. He let me put his phone number to get SMS and he gave me the pin number.
Finally.... I got the wifi access. I installed Skype on my phone. Went to the team chat and I went nut. Lol I was so exhausted. By that time I was thinking it was our manager fault to giving me a wrong address. That's why I went nut on the Skype chat hehe (sorry guys for misunderstanding). I went to the email, and checked if it's the same address that iem gave me and manager gave me. It was same. So then I thought it is iem fault to not taking care of me. Since I was the replaced player who got noticed at the very last moment they should have known I'm not gonna be able to come at normal time. So back to the story, I talked to people and they told me to go back to the address since the event finishes at 6 i should go back and wait for people. So i decided to call a taxi and go back to the address again. Asked employee to call taxi. Waited about 30 minutes, the taxi came.
It was about 6 ish. When I got back , it was 6 30. There was still no one, it was cold and getting dark. When I waited like 5 minutes? A car came. I was so happy finally... I'm going in to sleep... I was awake for about 24hours by then. One guy came out of car. I asked do u have a key? He said yes and he said he is a counter strike player. He took out his key put it into the door. "tic" . What the fuck.... -_- yes. The key broke, and half of key was stuck inside of door lock. g00t shit. Now I'm stuck again with this player rofl.... His dad who gave him a ride came again called a number that was on the paper. Thank god they were German. I don't know what they said since they spoke german. We chilled there for like 30 mins. However his dad was brilliant . He brought the car in front of the door put the light on to the door with car so he could fix it. He brought something sharp stuff and took out the part of the key. Now .. I only had to wait other players who have the key to come. Waited... Waited... Fkn cold. Finally all the other players was coming.
It was about 7 30 ? Not sure. I got into my room.... There was a bed, and sink. No bathroom. Ya ok. I had to notify people on the Skype. So I went downstairs to use wifi. There was no signal in the room, only in the first floor waiting room. I logged on Skype, dont worry I got here finally. Also asked where is killer? . Oh cool killer and boss, zaccubus were having nice dinner. (fuck u guys u guys don't care if I get lost or not) I went back to the room, lean on the bed, past out in 5seconds. Fuck wash I'm tired. Next day after I lost my group boss brought me and killer a nice dinner and he told me his hotel costs about 300euro a day cuz of cebit everything is expensive. So I understood iem they couldn't book hotel. So I blame that building reception for being away from the building without any notice massage that says where to call, get key. To make an excuse, I lost because of this shit happened a day before the tournament LOL. However it was good experience, I learned a lot.
I hate being lost in germanyyyy Fuck you. Also fuck you apple. I bought ipad2 like 5days ago and ipad3 came out fml. I'm gonna try a return when I get back to home. Im writing a story on the airplane from frankfurt to Vancouver to seattle in 4 hours after arriving. Thx for reading. please wish me a good luck in the next tournament hehe. Love you fans.
Sad you had to go through that, at least you have a story to tell. Why didn't you research the Ipad before buying it? there must have been some info about the new one coming out.

For a first story in english its well written, I can only say, it must have been awful, but the way you described it it souded to hilarious! XD BTW should we tell him that it was eveyrthing a hoax to stop him from playing well at IEM cuz we were all sure he would win?

Even though this would be for another topic...the blame is on the tons of scumbags.
For example, from the last 5 people who started talking to me on the street, 3 only pretended to need help and then tried to sell me stuff and 1 tried to steal from me - only 1 was a nice tourist. You can't really blame people for becoming "unhelpful" under those circumstances. I certainly wouldn't give my phone to anyone, ever. Not because I'm unhelpful in general, but just because I'm too afraid that the guy I give it to kicks me in the crotch and takes off.
I have done shit like this, like be at the right address but it is so quiet that you think god this can't be it then you go try and find the place and you can't you get angrier and angrier at the person who gave you the address then you find out it was the original address and you are just like FML just wasted an hour and a half. TT. Or in your case like 6 hours.
eek. I hope the next IEM events will provide better player treatment and improve the conditions. The pics Supernova and Zenio posted on twitter looked ridiculous lol.

It is expensive as hell to get hotels during cebit and IEM dont have unlimited funds. It should not really be a suprice to anyone the fact that IEM took some of the cheapest offers they have available, if the players dont like it they should either not go or pay them self for better rooms.(Which you have to do months in advance to get any sort of decent price)
Getting a good Hotel during cebit is a nightmare. I feel so sorry for all the players. Maybe next time the community can help. I bet there would have been 1000 fans in hannover alone that would have helped you with everything.
This so much resembles mrBitters journey to the ESL studio... Btw. You need a pin for wifi in german mcdonald? In poland we dont have such bullshit just a throttled speed.
On the side note. Glad to see you survive it Select

Yeah, it's a website, you put in your phone number and get a pin. Starbucks would be better, there you just click a link, have free wifi.

Not nice to hear this. I can't believe kone of the people you met knew how to transform +4477 into a german phone number. I mean, there are at max like 5 options that would make any sense, even if you didn't knew it. And yes, it has been discussed that getting a room around cebit in hanover is either freaking expensive or impossible. But organizers should tell foreign participants at least if their room is not in regular hotel.
Also to the guy bringing a the "german are racists"-claim: Not speaking english is different from being racist.
I was waiting for you to get robbed at at least 3 different points in the story. When you were in a car with all your bags, full of complete strangers, and they go off course to a gas station for some random reason, I was really fearing for you. Suppose you were lucky to have that happen to you in Germany and not here in the south of Europe xDD
I also share some of your pain. I had to cross Germany once by train(s), and then one of them got rescheduled, and the loudspeaker informed everyone, in perfect german. I could only tell something was wrong when everyone started complaining and leaving. I finally made it, but the sensation of being in a place where you are essentially unable to comunicate with the people around you is not very nice. That made me realize I need to learn at least some basic german.
i had a similar thing happend to me some years ago. moved to new city. got stoned with some ppl and got lost during night it was really cold and i had no coat. i know how you felt haha ^_^
As a swede who has traveled alone through germany couple of time without knowing any german at all i can confirm english is not the most viable language in Germany, of course some people speak really good english, but you can't count on that you can ask a stranger for directions, not because they dont want to but rather cos of a language barrier.
Also, the funny thing is that many germans who speaks english says that all germans speaks good english.. but this is far from the truth!

I think one of the big problems with the past IEM WC is the fact that it was hosted at Cebit. In a city that nearly doubles in size for that week, obviously this will lead to issues with hostels and hotels, not to talk about the cramped schedule with gaming between 0900-1800 local time, finals played at 12 on saturday.
I think nearly all the complaints with IEM WC has derived from the descision to hold it at Cebit, allthough i think the ESL guys did a great job with what they got. Edit: Allthough.. if IEM was responsible for your hostels and this happened, then it wasnt really handled that properly.
On March 13 2012 04:57 VTPerfect wrote: hopefully this never ever happens again, what a shitstorm of player conditions
Getting the basics of international travel down seems like something you'd expect from players and managers.
Bring a paper copy of everything that may be remotely relevant information, print out all vouchers and contact information. Research whether or not your phone will work beforehand. There are multiple standards internationally, hell, even within the US. Always store every phone number with the international prefix, that's '+' followed by the country code.

My german teacher recommend to us: 1. If you can talk any bit of German always try talking it and point until they ask you to switch to English. 2. If you cannot for the life of you talk German, talk Icelandic(or in Select's case korean) until they ask you to switch to English
(this is ofc in stores, I'm sure on the street people would look at you funny )

Well at least it gives PPV some justification. That sounds harrowing.
It doesn't have anything to do with PPV. What a horrendously misinformed assumption.
I'm saying that the PPV $ was used to provide the players with lodging and to pay for their air fare. Select deserves better lodging, don't you think?
The reason why they didn't have the best housing available at IEM is because they had the event during CEBIT one of the largest events in Germany, most hotels were booked 6 months in advanced.
haha thats so funny to read, like really everything going wrong, the perfect disaster, but thank god someone arrived, just think about sleeping outside or something ^.^

Its quite true, although there is quite a large amount of (especially younger) people speaking english, when you really need it, there always seems to be nobody around - must be the demonstration effect.

How is it the teams fault that there is no way to get a decent hotel room over there?

srsly, iem has to step up the organization AROUND their events, because this is terrible and shoulnt happen. what happened to violet is another story... probably an idiot there at the airport, but many ppl are unfriendly at airports, god knows why -,-
Just dont make those tournaments at EVENTS anymore, its rly, rly annoying... and you cant say that you couldnt fill up the hall with ppl, because that is the smallest problem now with sc2

Blame IEM. They're providing the rooms. And they had better provide them, what team wants to send a player for 500$ a night for 5 nights or so, on the chance they might win 35,000$ (that goes to the player due to most contracts?) More likely that they will win far far less, not even 1000$. Is it worth it for the team? No, then why would they send the players to IEM unless IEM paid for it. In that case, it falls upon the players to complain till IEM treats them better, or just refuse to go if it's not worth the effort for it.
And I wouldn't expect a 50$ room, but I could find a motel for that much with better amenities near the Superbowl for the same price. And I'd be willing to spend 150$ a night, which isn't unreasonable for a better place on average. Don't blame the team, blame CeBIT, and the indifference of IEM.

Those prison cells masquerading as hostels were pretty terrible. They're smaller than my worst dorm in all 4 years of school, and had less amenities.
What I find amusing about our community is that we harp on on about professionalism this and professionalism that. And apparently being made to bunk in tiny cramped rooms that no professional would find suitable is okay, and defendable. And people bring up the whole "They play games for a living, I would totally do stuff like that for the charmed life they lead". Uh no, if it's their job, they'd probably expect it to be better.

Their equipment is so shit I can't express myself ( yes I am poor ). Their cables last 2 months, their support is garbage. It's all about those "white" earphones.
Buy one mac Pro... waste your money or buy 3xPC, more powerful, and with decent warranty.

btw surprised select decided to re-sign with dignitas after this story, so many things that i think should have been done by the management, yet it was left up to the player to do.
Germany (and Austria) are pretty tough countries if you're asian and your English is not perfect. Most people 'round here just flat out suck at English, couple that with an asian accent and understanding gets hard. Especially in rural areas
Wouldn't read to much into it, all those people just had no idea what Select tried to say.
Because of this story the next time a random stranger asks for my help I'm gonna help them no matter what (not that it happens anyway:p). Suprised that so few "knew" english, thought germans were pretty good at it. They do get alot of shit dubbed though wich might hold their skills back abit.
I feel bad for you, but since it worked out ok in the end it's a funny story.
Sadly it's true that the general public does not speak english here in Germany. Even though it's the foreign language almost everyone gets taught at school, only a few actually speak and understand english well enough to be able to communicate in english. Our school system is terrible, many students are "left behind" and politicians don't care, and then we get to hear stories like this.
Nevertheless Germany is a great county, and the people are nice and willing to help, just be well prepared before you travel here. And Hannover during CeBIT is not representative of Germany in any way, just imagine a city like Atlanta hosting a convention several times as large as CES; of course all the hotels nearby will be fully booked months in advance, and everyone will be busy, while the city is flooded with tourists.
ROFL. g00t shit. and fuck you apple. Overall it was a fun read. There's humor in the text while explicitly showing how bad his day was. I'm also surprised that he paid for 1liter of gas. lul. that's cheap...that german.
Nice and funny read, i'm sorry you had a bad experience like that in Germany. There really was some bad luck involved. Hopefully you will still come back some time. Try to get to the next Home-Story-Cup. It should change the negative opinion about Germany, if you have one. Also when visiting a foreign country where you don't speak the language, it's not enough to have your managers phone number. Shit can go wrong. Take it as an experience to learn from.
I just can't believe the receptionist in that hostel didn't speak any english at all. It was the hostel for all the IEM players right? So they knew it would be mostly/only foreign guests... I think a hostel is totally fine for the players (thinking of the whine by some pro's), but there always should be someone to communicate at least in english. If the hostel cannot provide that, IEM should have.
Yeah, fuck the people that didn't care that you got lost lol.
I honestly thought something bad was gonna happen when he said he was getting into the car with some stranger. There was no description of the guy so all I thought was don't do it! he's gonna gg youuuuuu.
just goes to show what a waste of space Hannover is. Sorry for your experience Select though I agree with some here who said that you should have taken something written with you to be on the safe side.
Heh heh, looks like a lot of people had difficulties in getting to their rooms, I remember dApollo having similar issues while trying to get to his place.
Mcdonalds wifi is a real life saver (personal experience!)
Great story but a bummer lol, I have lost almost all my desire to ever go to germany after all these iem horror stories lol. Goodluck in future tournies Select.
Hey SeleCT! Your story gets pretty messy, but I can relate to having things go wrong in Europe where no one can communicate with you. I met you at DreamHack Winter a few months ago, we ate a meal together on the first day, you're still my favorite Terran, and I wish you the best of luck in upcoming tournaments (and travel).
I don't freaking care about how messy the story is or the fact that its such a huge wall of text. The mere fact that its SeleCT's blog makes it worth reading
Edit: Now that I've actually read the blog all I can say is AWESOME STORY!
And this statement "she got out of a bus and came" just cracked me up......speaks volumes of select's sex appeal LOL
